Something From Nothing !This is the first song released ahead of the forthcoming Foo Fighters album Sonic

Highways (it will be the bands 8th studio album). It is an exciting new concept from

the Foo’s whereby every track is recorded in a different city and with the musical

and lyrical content written with that city in mind. It even goes as far as

interviewing and featuring favourite musical sons and daughters of the cities on

the tracks, using their musical skills on the recordings and embedding phrases they

use in the interviews into the songs lyrics. I’m really excited about the album

personally so when the first single ‘Something from Nothing’ was released ahead

of the album I thought I would do a cover

!A QUICK WORD ON ARRANGEMENT !Whenever you have a song with multiple guitar parts and overdubs you have to

ask yourself which parts you particularly want to keep. If you watch live versions of

this from the band you can see up to 4 guitars at any one time as well as the keys

and bass etc. Luckily for us in terms of important parts we can simmer and reduce

this down to two main tracks, as I have used in my original cover video. You can

hear that it still sounds very full and retains all the features that you might want to

hear. For the ease of playing it in a single continuous take, as you would live, I have also

turned the slide parts into normal guitar lines and we will hybrid pick the intro,

thereby getting rid of the need to put the plectrum down while we fingerpick the

intro. I have decided to write out the PDF in the order of the song so to master the

arrangement simply follow it page by page and play the amounts given.

Lets get started!

Intro !First up is two repetitions of this

little bad boy. We’re going to

‘Hybrid pick’ this which just means

u s e o u r p l e c t r u m A N D t h e

remaining fingers to pluck. In this

case, use the pick for the low note

and pluck the remaining open G and B strings with our second and third fingers (or

M and A if you are aware of the classical finger naming method, see below)

!!!As is the case with most

hybrid picking P and I are

busy holding the pick so

you have M, A and C

remaining. As your little

fi n g e r C i s s o w e a k

however you find few

people will use it and take

the time to develop it

( t h o u g h I w o u l d

recommend you do).

!!As we continue on through

the intro we now enter into a

nice descending chromatic

line, with the same open

notes ringing out.

Right hand

This is the classical naming

system. The letters are

short for the following

spanish words:Pulgar

The pattern continues down until we have a faster change in bar 7. Ideally you will

use finger 2 for the C note (fret 3, a string) and your first finger for the E note (fret

2, D string).

!Verse

!This verse riff is a

combination of two

p a r t s , d e s c e n d i n g

octaves based on the

descending notes we

just used in the intro,

a n d s o m e c h i m i n g

fingerpicked open strings. Im using a hybrid picking approach still and I go into the

fingers used in the accompanying video. This is played through once before moving

into the next section.

Heavy Break, Verse 2, Heavy break 2 !This section comes in at the end of

the verse. Simple but effective open

notes and not much to say other than

make sure you slide nicely into the

last note of the first bar, being careful

not to let the listener hear a starting

point. Play this riff above twice before moving to the following chords:

!!!At this point in the song we go back to

the verse, played identically and then

again move to this same heavy break

consisting of the riff above twice and

then some chords. The difference is

the chords are slightly different and replace those shown above. Here they are:

To clarify the arrangement so far is as follows:Intro x 1

Verse x1

Heavy riff x1

Verse x1

Heavy riff with alternate chord ending x1

The ‘riff’ Up next we have the riff thats causing a lot of controversy online and amongst

metal fans for allegedly ripping off the famous Dio song ‘Holy Diver’. There are

definitely similarities but to be honest I don't think its the end of the world

whether it was intentional or not. We’re here to play guitar not discuss plagiarism

so lets have a look at it:

!The first time we play it we will be

repeating it 8 times. This may seem

like a lot but you just wait till later!!

!!!

Solo 1 backing and more Riffs! !!!!!!!This riff sits underneath the first solo. Again it is a mixture of two parts, some nice

chords with ringing open strings. Try and strum straight through the chord into the

single notes this time rather than hybrid picking the part. You will repeat this

section three times, the last of which has a different ending, shown below, that will

replace the second bar above.

At this point we go back to the

‘riff’ (see above) a stunning 20

MORE TIMES! This is a serious test

of your counting if you're not playing

with vocals etc to give you cues. Play

the first 12 repetitions medium

rocking and the final 8 repetitions I

want you to step it up a gear!

Middle A nice crushing descending riff here for you, Its a common movement you often

see when chords descend chromatically (one fret at a time), and uses two shapes

(written in the chord boxes below).

!!!

!!!!

You will repeat this section four times, and

as is becoming a common theme here, on the final run

through you will change the last bar. This is a

common songwriting trick, in this case the new bar

uses the same chords but introduces a mute before

the final chord which throws the final chord off the

beat. Heres what it looks like written down:

!Heavy breakdown Up next is another breakdown. The song hasn't followed conventional song

structure so far in the usual verse chorus verse chorus method and here we have

another unique section.

This is the first bar, based around

an octave shape (check out the

video for an explanation of the

mutes). The best strumming

direction here is down down up, as

written, and there is an interesting

muted slide (also see video). All

notes are played with a slight bend.

We then continue the pattern throughout the rest of the section moving up and

down the A string with octave shapes before ending the riff with two stabs of the F

power chord. Watch out for the fast

change (underlined in red) which will

require some practice. We repeat the

section twice and on the second

repetition replace the last bar with this:

!!‘Foo Fighters Episode V: The Riff strikes back’ and Outro !You thought that was the end of it didn’t you? WRONG, the riff is back and it

means business. Not as many repetitions this time, you only need to play it a

meagre 16 times, however this is the final race to the end of the song so you need

to play it with even more intensity than before. I talk about this and introducing

the open E string in my accompanying video. To finish the song we will play the

‘Heavy break’ once more only this time we are hitting extra strings and ending on a

fuller chord like so:

!!!!!!!!Thats it! take your time piecing it all together and keep referring back to the

instructional video, as well as the cover video to see it in action. Will
