Tiger’s United After Come from Behind Win

Sunshine United have forged a miraculous comeback to take out the Kookaburra Sports / Frank Turner Shield in the VTCA Senior Division this season.

Considering the Covid interrupted season with all games this season reverting to one day encounters, first and second XI finals were changed to best of three one day grand final series.

Sunshine United looked for the majority of the summer to be the team most adaptable to the one-day format boasting several all-rounders and a very good fielding side.

Doutta Stars also boast an array of quality all-rounders and it was no surprise to see them push past minor Premier St. Albans in the Semi Final.

Most predicted Sunshine United to probably start flag favourites in the best of three series, but nobody convinced Patrick Willach or Hamish Moore.

In Game One the Tigers posted a competitive target total of 6/204 which had Thomas Duxson top scoring with 62 and skipper Neeten Chouhan 52, the pair compiling a 74-run partnership along the way.

In Doutta Stars run chase openers Willach and Moore were in devasting touch, especially young gun Willach who amassed a match winning 116 off only 104 balls, striking at 111.54. Young Patrick was well supported by his captain and opening partner Hamish Moore who didn’t have the scorers putting their pens down either, amassing 82 off 99 balls. When Moore fell with the score at 173, it was left to Willach and former skipper Brenton Parchment to steer the ship home, passing United’s total one wicket down in the 36th over.

Game two scheduled for Sunday 21 March was abandoned due to consistent rain throughout the

entirety of the day, which enacted Sunday 28 March as a Reserve Day, if required.

With rain pouring throughout the intervening week, the mathematicians were out in force trying to decipher what would happen if the inclement weather continued into the final weekend.

This washout meant day two moved to the scheduled Day three on Saturday 27. With the weather gods giving us some respite, we were able to get games underway.

Sunshine United won the toss and sent Doutta Stars into bat however the heroes of week one in Willach and Moore could replicate the previous week’s feats. Willach (4) was the first to go and when Moore (28) returned to the changerooms, the Stars were in big trouble at 5/48.

Things did not improve much from there for Doutta Stars, who were dismissed for a paltry 87 in the thirtieth over with Nalin Amarthunga (4/18) and Thomas O’Brien (3/27) inflicting the damage.

The Tigers started their run chase disastrously losing both openers Chouhan and star recruit Kaushal Lokuarachchi, both without scoring. A controversial caught behind decision on Thomas Duxson would have seen the home side 3/0 and staring down the barrel of grand final defeat. Fortunately for them the decision was given not out and the prolific number three remained.

Duxson (43) with support from brother Adam (16) and Roshan Laksiri (16), were able to get the Tigers home with five wickets down and ensuring the series went to a game three decider. Veteran tweaker Robert Rutley was the best of the Stars attack with 3/27.

Game 3 was a nail biter with both teams determined to take out this compromised season flag.

This time around Moore won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. Doutta got the start they wanted, picking up opener David Khera for four with the score 1/5.

VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION (VTCA) - OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

Thomas Duxson again was the thorn in the side for Moore’s merry men, top scoring again with 56, with help from Chouhan (37) Nalin Amarthunga (23) getting United to a mid-table score of 163. Joel Whitehead was the best of the Stars bowlers with 4/40 off his eight overs.

Doutta Stars batting for the final time in this premiership stoush were looking steady with Moore and Parchment going well after losing Willach again cheaply.

They put together a 69 run partnership for the second wicket until Moore (37) was dismissed and shortly after Parchment (35) both at the hands of Amarthunga, things then started to unravel for the visitors.

*Has Parchy played his last innings for Doutta Stars. We hope not….

*The Stars discuss tactics.

The remainder of the batsman toiled away without anyone taking the bull by the reigns and putting together a match winning knock.

With one over to be bowled, the scenario read, 14 runs to get, nine wickets down but renowned big hitter Rutley still at the crease with Connor Thompson.

With two balls remaining Thompson was run out after Lokuarachchi threw one to Laksuri to complete a come from behind win in the best of three Grand Final trilogy.

*Sunshine United claim their first Senior Division Flag.

Medal Found in Hay’s Run Stack

*Druids Roy Paxino Medallist, Michael Hay rolling the arm over.

Druids gun player Michael Hay has capped off a brilliant season by claiming his first Roy Paxino Medal.

Hay’s decorated summer includes the pre finals number one leading aggregate scorer with 506 runs at an average of 57.33, which included a top score of 103* and four half centuries.

Hay topped that off with a dozen wickets at just over 26 per wicket, which has had him take out the award with 26 votes, two votes ahead of Strathmore’s Chris Williams with 24 votes and Sunshine United’s Thomas Duxson and St. Albans Geeth Alwis equal third with 23 votes each.

VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION (VTCA) - OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

All three placegetters with the exception of Duxson polled their votes in six games, Duxson in seven.

Credit must go out to Hay having been the mainstay of the Druids batting line-up this summer, receiving scant assistance from a team that sat closer to relegation instead of challenging with only Andrew Brennan the other Druids batsman to exceed 200 runs for the season.

Hay’s win comes on top of an equal third place finish last season behind Doutta Stars West Indian import Lorenzo Ingram.

Tagger Leads Eagles Promotion

A Sunny Taggar masterpiece delivered Craigieburn a breakthrough VTCA Division 1 premiership on Saturday.

Walking to the crease at 3-7, Taggar produced arguably one of the finest knocks in VTCA history, finishing unbeaten on 101 from just 98 balls.

Taggar combined with No. 11 Zac Orr for a 56-run 10th-wicket partnership and again with the ball as Orr claimed 5-27 and Taggar 2-6 to skittle Sunshine at DS Aitken Reserve.

Coach Chris Laffan was in awe of Taggar and Orr’s performances.

“Unbelievable, we had a big crowd here and a lot of people were saying it was the best knock they’d seen in local cricket,” he said.

*Craigieburn’s Man of the Series Sunny Tagger with the ball.

“We were 4-8, everything against us, sent into bat on a soft wicket, our backs against the wall and for Sunny to bat the way he did was a great knock.

“Even at 9-90 the game was in the balance and to put 150 on the board with one wicket in hand is a massive credit to him.

“Zac hung around in that last-wicket partnership and it was great reward for him to get five-for in a grand final. “He’s a young kid who’s come a long way, it’s great for him, fantastic for the club and holds us in good stead heading up a division next year.”

Taggar and Orr’s partnership guided the Eagles to 9-150 before they rolled through Sunshine for just 58 in a 142-run mauling.

It backed up a tense 18-run win in Game 1 last Saturday and secured Craigieburn a 2-0 grand final series triumph.Taggar was critical again, scoring 26 runs, while Nick Pappin added 20 to guide the home team to 9-104 before three wickets to skipper Mick Bury (3-15) and Josh Eaton (3-29) saw the Crows dismissed for 86.

The Isaacs Howarth Shield title is the Eagles’ first since winning the Division 2 crown in 2016-17 and lifts it to Senior Division for the first time in club history.

*Josh Orr overjoyed with dismissing Crows skipper Troy Stone.

Laffan said it was just reward for all the hard work. “It’s a massive achievement for the club, a lot of people have put in a lot of effort so it’s fantastic to get the rewards.

“It’s been a slow climb, we’ve been consistent in the way we’ve built through the grades.

“Between the three premierships we’ve won in the VTCA I think it’s been five years, five years and four years.

“There’s a handful of guys that have played in all three and a couple that have played in two, so it’s great for those boys to get the reward and a crack at Senior Division.

*To the victor, go the spoils. The Eagles boys enjoying Premiership success.

“Josh Eaton has been fantastic since his arrival, assisting through the coaching ranks and his efforts on the field as well.

“Our core local group, Sammy, Adam and Brodie just to name a couple, it’s great to have a crack at Senior Division and hopefully we’re able to highlight our talent.

”With Craigieburn moving up, Aberfeldie will return to Division 1 after a difficult debut season in Senior Division playing without a home ground.

Airport West / St. Cristopher’s boom recruit Daniel Salpietro was a runaway winner in the Tony Isaacs / Peter Howarth Medal for the best player in Division One.

Salpietro the former Victorian and Big Bash representative had spent the last few seasons playing for Clarence Cricket Club in Tasmania, which included some Tasmanian Second XI games and further big bash matches, Salpietro took the decision to return home to Victoria this summer and proved to be the recruit of the season for the Saints.

During the season Salpietro was almost unstoppable for opposition attacks, compiling 590 runs at an average of 53.64. His consistency yielded seven 50’s and yet he did not score a hundred, his best being 94 in Round 6 against Tullamarine.

His season’s run aggregate was 140 more than next best, Craigieburn’s Sunny Tragger.

Altona North Return to Div 1 after Fighting Win

Altona North and Newport Digman produced an epic three match grand final series, with Altona North prevailing in the decider to clinch the series 2-1.

The feat was even more significant given Altona North (fourth) secured their grand final berth after defeating minor premier Greenvale Kangaroos in the Semi Final, this a major effort after Greenvale had finished 15 points and a fair bit of percentage clear on the ladder after the home and away season.

Newport Digman also did well to qualify for the best of three finals as well after defeating second placed Sydenham / Hillside in their respective Semi Final.

Game one saw Altona North get their heads in front will a relatively comfortable win after Newport Digman posted what proved to be a below par score of 9/136 from their allotted overs with captain Matthew Shiel contributing 61 of those. Domenic D Guglielmo with 3/28 was the best of the Altona North attack.

In their turn at bat, Altona North’s skipper Nick Rainone turned the game their way with a match high 83*, with assistance from Luke Rainone on 26 which allowed the visitors to pass the target, three wickets down in the 32nd over.

Game two was a dourer affair with Newport Digman scoring a disappointing 115 to be bowled out in the 36th over with tailenders Shannon Evans (23) James Streets (22) offering some resistance.

The Deer Park Club first came to prominence with the VTCA after accepting an opportunity to become sponsors in 2017/18.

At the tea break it looked for all money like a clean sweep for Altona was on the cards. Newport was not to be rolling over without a fight however and both Evans and Shiel with three wickets each provided the platform for a fighting, come from behind thriller dismissing the visitors for a paltry 99 in the 34th over, to level the decider.

In contrast the deciding game was a bit of a fizzer. Without taking anything away from Altona North,

with a fine, sunny day on offer, it was expected these two teams to go hammer and tong to gain the right to promotion to Division 1.

For the third time in the series, Digman set Altona North a target to chase, this time being dismissed in the last over of their innings for 116. Sulan Jayawardhana (30) and Shiel with 28 the best of.

Buddhi Samarawickrama with 3/26 was Altona’s best.

This time around all of Altona North’s top order got a start and passed the total in only the 27th over with the loss of four wickets. Skipper Rainone topped with 33 and Phillip Auciello was 25not out when they claimed the chocolates.

closest rival in the division the last few years.“We

knew they were going to come out all guns

blazing, but we always back ourselves.”

The Imperials claimed game two, to take the

series to a decider. The Lions were able to bowl

out the Imperials for 91. Corey Irving and

Shanahan took three wickets each.

Shanahan said they were thrilled to restrict them

to that total, but knew it wasn’t over.

“It is good, but we always say the lowest totals

are the hardest to chase. In the semi final we

bowled them out for 51 and we managed to get

53, seven down. “We knew we had to stick to our

plans. Pick up singles and twos when we could.”

The Imperials got the runs, finishing 4-94 to seal

the premiership to start a couple of whirlwind days

for the side.

Irving top scored with 39 not out. Imperials’

skipper Haydn Wilkinson was named man of the

series, which Shanahan said was well deserved.

The premiership is the club’s first senior one in

the VTCA and first since the 2011-12 season. It

means the side is likely to play in Division 2 next

season. Shanahan said it was a challenge they

were prepared for.

“It’s come at a good time, we’ve prepared for a

long time. “Last year we made the semi-final and

with the inclusion of a couple of players we were

able to build.

“We got continuity in the side. We had only 19

players who played ones this year, that’s the least

we’ve had in years.”

Roberto’s Consistency Ensures Picone Medal

East Keilor’s Louis Roberto polled in six of the twelve completed matches to claim the Division 3 Roy Picone Medal with 24 votes, three votes ahead of runner up, Williamstown Imperials David Kirk on 21, with Luke Simpson from Sunshine Heights a further vote away with twenty to finish outright third.

Roberto finished fifth in the batting aggregates, compiling exactly 300 runs at a healthy 25.00 per innings, with a high of 49.

Roberto’s season also included a top twenty finish in the bowling aggregates with 15 wickets at a respectable 9.47 and a best of 3/17.

Whilst the Picone Medal will be personally something Louis will be proud of, the disappointment of East Keilor finishing the season as minor premiers and getting bundled out of the Semi Final by fourth placed and eventual Premier West Newport will cut deep with the East Keilor allrounder.

I am sure this will renew the enthusiasm at East Keilor to come back even better next summer.

Sunbury Grab Premiership After 12 Months in the Waiting

Charles Clark Division 4 juggernaut Sunbury clean swept their Grand Final series two games to nil against rival Footscray United.

After being cruelly robbed of the Premiership in their inaugural VTCA season of 2019-20, when with the result almost across the line against Moonee Valley, when the COVID-19 lockdown struck mid grand final handing the result to Moonee Valley, the lads from Sunbury had been champing at the bit to avenge the injustice of having the flag ripped from their proverbial fingers.

From the first ball bowled in anger this season, they were the clear stand outs in Division Four. Their season had only the one hiccup, having been defeated by Grand Final rival Footscray United in Round four at Scovell Reserve.

In almost all other games they were convincing winners with their exceptional bowling attack led by Jason McGann and ably supported by Jay King and Jason McGowan, proving too much for opposition teams to produce winning scores.

Their dominance as a team succeeded in them finishing three games and a huge percentage margin in front of their nearest rival.

In the Grand Final series game one, they put together a competitive total of 9/130 off their allotted forty overs mainly through Craig Ballinger (41) and Michael Treweek (30).

* “It’s Ours”, the Division 4 flag is heading to Sunbury.

In reply Footscray could only muster 70, having been bowled out in the 31st over with skipper Stephen Treweek best of the bowlers, chipping in with 3/25.

Game two was just an absolute rout with Sunbury not even requiring getting out of second gear. The home side at Progress Reserve again posted a tough target with 8/152, McGann top scoring with 63 and then making short work of United bowling them out for a paltry 43 in the 20th over with the three destroyers in McGann with four wickets and McGowan and King each claiming three wickets each.

After a twelve month wait, justice was done, and redemption was gained. Sunbury now progress up to Division 3 and with the talent at their disposal, they will be a competitive outfit in that division as well.

Hopefully for them at some stage during the season coming that they will finally get the opportunity to run out onto their very own turf wicket table at Clark Oval in Sunbury. The expectation that finally playing at home in Sunbury will entice more talented local players through the door, ultimately strengthening their side even more.

Back-to-Back Divisional Medals for McGann after Tied Result

Sunbury’s Jason McGann has claimed his second consecutive VTCA Divisional medal, this time taking out the Division 4 Charles Clark Medal sharing the award with Moonee Valley’s Nadeera Thuppahi, after last season winning the Russell Pollock Medal in Division 5.

McGann and Thuppahi each poled 29 votes, three votes clear of second placed Lahiru Kumara from Melton Centrals on 26 and a further three votes adrift was third placed Isuru Yaddehige from Aberfeldie Park.

Thuppahi was a dominant figure with the bat, putting together a 644-run campaign at a decisive average of 64.40.

McGann also was no slouch with the bat either, his output was 462 runs at 51.33. As you would expect both were the leading run scorers from the division.

McGann was the competitions standout with the ball in hand, claiming a healthy 40 wickets at just an amazing 7.03. Yaddehige was also impressive with 36 wickets at 7.08.

All eyes will be on Jason McGann next season to see if he can produce the three-peat and claim his third consecutive division medal from different grades as his club steps up into the Roy Picone Shield Division 3.

Given his dominance over the past two summers, McGann will start a reasonably short, priced favourite.

Underdog Colts Clean Sweep Flag Favourites

A confident Williamstown Colts, who self admittedly went into their Grand Final playoffs against highly fancied Bellbridge as rank underdogs, played two days of perfect cricket to send the favourites packing in Division 5, the Russell Pollock Shield, wondering what the…?

Bellbridge completed the Home and Away season on top of the table above rivals Williamstown Colts by a game and a half and with the knowledge of having beaten them reasonably comfortably in Round 12 away and with a best of three grand final playoff set at home at Mossfiel Reserve, the outfit from Hoppers Crossing deserved to feel a level of confidence.

The Colts however had other ideas and any confidence Bellbridge may have taken into the first encounter was ripped up and torn to threads after the hosts won the toss, electing to bat on a perfect batting wicket and were subsequently humiliated within twenty-one overs when the Colts had them all out for an unacceptably paltry 34.

Ensuring the visitors rammed home their ascendancy, they reeled of the target in just the eleventh over of their innings – one wicket down. Bellbridge which had boasted the strongest batting line-up of the division, could not get a batter to post more than 6 and their innings included five ducks.

With Bellbridge’s confidence seemingly shot to pieces, their saving grace came with the weather turning nasty and washing out the second game 24 hours later.

Would the week getting back to training re-focus the boys at Mossfiel for an effort that better reflected their output for the duration of the season.

The week training and getting the head space right clearly was beneficial for the home team as their performance was much improved in game 2.

Colts won the toss and elected to bat compiling a competitive but not insurmountable 4/167 from their

VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION (VTCA) - OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

40 overs. Joel Kitchen with 59 not out, supported by Rukshan Kulatunga (31) were the major contributors.

Bellbridge were much improved this time at bat and for a period were handily placed in the run chase however the total proved just to be out of their reach, being dismissed in the final over for 156, a dozen runs short of extending the play offs to game three.

Williamstown Colts President Steve Willis was ecstatic after the victory and could not have been prouder of his chargers.

“We were confident we had the game to beat them, we learnt a lot in the Round 12 game, and we were also aware we didn’t play to our best in that game. Anything near our best we felt would be good enough to get the job done”, Willis added.

consistency throughout the summer was rewarded with two centuries and three half centuries including a top score of 190.

Added to his Indian summer Spencer also finished in the top dozen wicket takers in the division with 20 wickets to his name.

After a couple of lean years coaching Footscray Angliss, Spencer moved across to Bellbridge this campaign in search of premiership success. Whilst the individual honour is something to take pride in, Spencer would swap the Pollock medal for one of the premiership variety.

Undoubtably Daniel and his teammates will be focused on redemption as the theme driving them through their pre-season efforts into next season’s games, focusing on ensuring they are a participant in the final fortnight of March 2022.

FLAG TO FLUTTER AT FEARON FOR CY’S LADIES

This time a year ago a group of ladies from Williamstown knew as much about cricket as they did

about navels ship building down the road, but now they are all VTCA Premiership players after claiming the 2020/21 Deer Park Club Women’s Division Grand Final last Sunday at the Fearon Reserve North Oval. I am sure one of the proudest people who were watching the game amongst an enormous crowd would have been Williamstown CYMS President Leigh Hillier. Hillier has worked tirelessly in pursuit of re-building this iconic club back up to former glories. With an aging population in the area and the financiers of past long gone, attracting players to the club has been a chore for the hard-working current committee.

Hillier approached the VTCA towards the end of 2019/20 enquiring about what was required to field a ladies side for this season and asked if we thought that putting a side on the park would boost club numbers. Simple answer is an overwhelming YES with firstly the interest of girls / ladies wanting to try this once male dominant sport and even more emphatically by the numbers who turn up to watch the girls on a sunny Summer afternoon, especially at the picturesque ground overlooking Port Phillip Bay. “The response has been amazing, a few girls started to train, others walking past expressed interest, then more and more until towards the end of the season we could have probably fielded two sides. We will definitely field two teams next season,” Hillier told the leading edge. “Even the number of spectators they get, blows you away, partners, husbands, children, parent’s friends – whereas our blokes get the odd onlooker, the ladies have a crowd”, the President added.

* The Ladies got right into the occasion, even singing the National Anthem when the PA developed Covid like symptoms.

For the record the Williamstown CYMS girls won the toss and elected to have first use of a dryish batting deck and they compiled 8/84 off their 20 overs. Sorry we cannot give any individual scores as the girls have been in celebration mode for a week and still haven’t updated their scorecard.

*CY’s girls celebrate the final wicket.

Their opponents Glenroy in their second consecutive Grand Final toiled hard and were right in the match until the final ball, falling disappointingly close by the narrowest of margins they topped out their innings at 6/82. Reaching the final was a great achievement by Glenroy who were struggling to field a side right up to the selection night of the first game however credit goes out to the two Ashleigh’s who have worked so hard rallying around the girls to not only put a team together but one that has gelled so well and adapted to the game that they almost took home the chocolates. After two sets of Runners Up medals, let’s hope the Glenroy ladies can go one better next season and claim their first premiership in the competition.

*An impressive looking flag to flutter in the sea breeze at Fearon Reserve.

Deer Park Club Medal for Glenroy Captain / Coach

Glenroy Captain / Coach Ashley Angus was duly rewarded for the time and effort she put in to resurrect the Glenroy Cricket Club’s ladies’ team by winning her first Deer Park Club – Player of the Year Medal.

As late as the week proceeding the first game of the season, it appeared Glenroy amongst others would not be able to field a side but credit due to Ashley and a couple of hard-working assistants – they worked the phones, twisted some arms, and came within a whisker of a premiership.

While Angus (18) was clearly the standout player in the division this season claiming the coveted award by eight votes ahead of Lily Ryan (10) from St. Andrews Pascoe Vale and Shannon Egan from Williamstown CYMS with third place again shared between Gemma Hargreaves from Sunbury and Elizabeth Chan from CY’s with 8 votes each.

From an administrative perspective, it is just reward for someone showing the dedication to chase down ladies and girls locally to ensure her club could field a ladies side for the girls who were keen to play but also in the face of scrutiny and pressure being asserted from forces outside the club who appear hell bent on pushing Glenroy Cricket Club out of Sewell Reserve.

Let us hope Angus’s dominant season and the prospect of reversing consecutive grand final losses into a deserved premiership will further kindle interest locally for the girls to have a serious tilt at the 2021/22 premiership.

Credit too to the Glenroy Committee led by Ben Swartze, (similarly to all clubs who have embraced the women’s concept) for firstly being bold in appointing a leader such as Ashley as coach with a clean canvas in relation to players and more importantly providing an atmosphere for the women’s team to feel a valuable part of the Glenroy Cricket Club.

Some further clubs facing pressure from outside forces to initiate female teams could do worse than speak to representatives of both Glenroy and St. Andrews Pascoe Vale as well, for advise on garnishing interest from local girls and ladies – as sport participation dwindles periodically, those clubs that can move and evolve with the times will thrive – those that sit back and think that what’s worked in the past will continue to see us through, could be left floundering.

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR KEILOR AFTER U/18 WIN

After what has been a transition year for Keilor Cricket Club’s First XI with a new attitude of replacing International talent with a batch of talented young players, there is yet more to be excited about for the club with their Under 18 team winning the William Wringe Under 18 Competition Shield last weekend for the first time. The Keilor lads hosted the final at Joe Brown Recreational Reserve in Keilor against archrivals Yarraville Club. The two teams had met twice during the season with Keilor winning the early season encounter at Yarraville Club and late in the season, Yarraville reversing the result at Keilor. With both clubs progressing to the Grand Final with comprehensive victories in each of their Semi Finals –

~ Notice ~

Consider Fielding a Women’s Team

After the success of first-time teams Keilor and Williamstown CYMS winning the Women’s Division Premiership in their first season in each of the last two seasons, the VTCA urge other clubs to consider fielding a Women’s team in 2021/2022.

If your club does not quite have the numbers to field a standalone team – you can play a combined side with another club in your area.

Check out the enjoyment on these girls / ladies faces, they have had a ball.

Extra family members frequenting your club on a Sunday will also do wonders to your fundraising and canteen budgets, not to mention the grants continually on offer…..

Some clubs elected not to field teams with the COVID pandemic last season, we hope those that dropped away, return.

Hopefully more will also come on board.

Let us know early if you are considering a Women’s Team.

VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION (VTCA) - OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

this encounter was expected to be a close, down to the wire, no holds barred classic.

*Winners are Grinners – Keilor boys posing for photo’s. Sadly, this failed to eventuate as the game was a blowout and finished early. The Clubbers skipper Connor Poulton called correctly at the toss and decided to bat first which on a Keilor wicket which has been productive to runs scoring all season, even with a nice grass covering. The collapse that followed could not be attributed to the wicket, more a combination of poor shot selection by the Yarraville Club young bats and some very good bowling by the Keilor attack. In an innings where only your openers in skipper Poulton and Lachlan Campbell and number eight Muhammad Rafray could reach double figures, interspersed with three ducks – a competitive target was never an option.

*Umpires Gary Houston & regular weekend chauffeur Craig Babatsikos look resplendent in their official uniform.

Yarraville Club were bowled out in the 32nd over for a disappointing 67 with four of the Keilor bowlers sharing two wickets each. Unfortunately there was never enough runs on the board and Keilor passed the total, one wicket down with Noah Paneia (29) and Akhmal Rajudin 27 not out. This is great reward for the Keilor committee and coaching staff for committing to a promotion of youth through the club this season. As these kids mature and develop consistency in their games, they will be a very formidable club for some time. Talking after the game to Keilor Legend and VTCA Life Member Russell Pollock, seven or eight of these boys remain eligible for Under 18 cricket next season, which gives them a decent platform for Back-to-Back Premierships. The VTCA have as part of their current strategic planning, a desire to increase the Under 18 concept into two divisions as early as next season. This is a tremendous concept for the development of your clubs younger players and if you haven’t explored the option of fielding an under 18’s team yet, I ask Why Not? You are not giving your younger players the best opportunity to develop as turf cricketers without being involved in this division. For those clubs with limited numbers of players, in recent seasons, clubs have “loaned” players to other clubs who field a side in the division to ensure their players can get a grounding and understanding of playing on turf. Too much of their junior development is played on synthetic wickets and when they progress to senior cricket on turf are often slow to embrace the differences of playing on turf as opposed to playing on synthetic wickets.

SENIOR COACHING OPPORTUNITY

Sunbury Cricket Club seek expressions of interest to appoint a Senior Men’s Cricket Coach and a Senior Women’s Cricket Coach for Season 2021/22. This is the perfect opportunity for coaches and experienced players looking toward a new challenge.

We are the only cricket club in Sunbury and surrounding areas that offer TURF cricket.

It is an exciting time for the Sunbury Cricket Club as it looks toward VTCA Division 3 in Men’s Cricket and in Women’s cricket the Roar look to further develop and continue to grow as it competes in both VTCA and GDCA local competition.

In Men’s cricket, Sunbury CC won both 1st and 2nd XI VTCA Division 4 Premiers in season 2020/21 earning promotion to VTCA Division 3. The 1st XI dominated

the competition only losing one match for the season. The team has a mix of experience and youth, champion players and young stars of the future. The success of the 2nd XI is the direct result of a strong junior program. The Premiership team comprised of six players under 21, four of which are from the U17 squad ably led by a mix of experience.

Overall Sunbury Cricket Club field five senior men’s teams and a full complement of junior teams. Season 20/21 presented many challenges however a by implementing a strong training program we were able to have four of the five senior teams play in finals. This was all complemented by the U17’s narrowly missing out on Grand Final day spelling a bright future for the club.

The Sunbury Roar Women’s team competed in the GDCA semi-finals and presented well in the VTCA. SCC was able to offer cricket each week for its players by entering in two competitions. Qualifying for finals in its first two seasons the Sunbury Cricket Club Women’s team continues to grow and develop.

Sunbury Cricket Club have shown success in playing turf cricket at Progress Reserve and look forward to the installation of a new turf wicket table as part of a resurfacing upgrade of Clarke Oval which has been earmarked for 2021/22. SCC stand alone in offering turf cricket in Sunbury.

SCC offer an excellent opportunity for Senior playing or non-playing coaches for:

• Senior Men’s Cricket • Senior Women’s Cricket

Coach Picks Up New Nickname After Mixed Season

A former top division player who this season accepted a playing coach role at a lower division club and has had a few nicknames attributed to him over the course of his career, “Chucky” may have been one, inadvertently picked up a new one this year after a run of outs that looked something like this..0,0,0,0.

The new name you ask.

Obviously, it had to be Audi.

Could have been worse of course, another zero and it would have been Olympic Rings! Was not all bad for our intrepid hero though, he did lead his side to a Grand Final after all.

Rumour has it said coach has applied for the vacant coaching role of the Victorian Cricket Team. Does not lack confidence, our boy.

Clubs Not Left Guessing After Recruiting Clean Sweep

An aspiring Division 1 club has made their intentions clear for next season with the imminent recruitment of the proverbial full hand in playing card terms, they have acquired a pair of Senior Division Premiership Players and Paxino Medallists – Yep that’s two former Senior Division Players of the Year.

The Club in question have had an exceptional period of Premiership success in recent years, so you would think an unsuccessful finals tilt could be put down to a touch of bad luck or just not up to it with the COVID -19 restrictive finals this season, however it appears by the serious recruiting haul they have undertaken, said club means business and will leave no stone unturned in an all-out assault on Senior Division promotion.

Might be ten Senior Division clubs looking over their shoulder and keeping a closer than normal eye on Division 1 results next campaign.

Subbies Clubs Looking to Field Teams in VTCA U/18’s Division

With Associations and Clubs now in the organisational stages for what next season’s requirements are, at least two Victorian Sub District Association clubs have made strong enquires about fielding teams in the VTCA Under 18 Division.

Clubs that have been fielding sides in this division have been commenting how good this grade has become for the development and transition of their junior players to becoming established turf cricketers.

Clearly the word of mouth has filtered to our Subbies cousins and the expectation of some VSDCA representation in this grade is highly likely.

The VTCA’s Rumour Mill

VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION (VTCA) - OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

Might be an opportune time for VTCA existing clubs with promising juniors to explore this option as well. With the quality eroding locally of competitive top age junior hard wicket competitions – why not field a side(s) in a hard-fought top-notch competition?

For those clubs not fully conversant with the division, it is not purely restrictive to 17–18year olds. Some of our clubs, field juniors from 14years up in their team, as many of these kids are starting to filter into senior turf teams, hence the need to develop their game on turf decks.

This avoids underprepared kids being thrown in sides exclusively with adult players.

Victorian Premier club Greenvale Kangaroos are so supportive of the concept and are convinced on how well the grade is as a development division, they fielded three teams in the Under 18’s this season.

VTCA President Steve McNamara would be thrilled with more teams affiliating in this grade as the association is looking to expand the concept to multiple grades, hopefully as early as this coming season.

“We are very confident that juniors coming through this division are fast tracking their knowledge and gaining confidence in learning the nuances of playing cricket on turf decks.

Even in lower grades you have some good players floating around teams for various reasons and some physically strong players, which can intimidate some younger players. Our Under 18 grade gets juniors playing against juniors initially, while they learn the craft in a competitive environment.

While it is terrific to have clubs fielding more than one team in this division, part of our strategic planning is to expand the Under 18’s to multiple grades, even possibly introducing grading as ideally you do not want teams from the same club playing each other, wherever possible.

Some clubs who do not have enough juniors have combined players with other local clubs to ensure their players get to experience playing this grade. For

example Sunshine United and Yarraville Club have amalgamated players to field a team.

This season Bellbridge Cricket Club fielded a very young team and were competitive throughout the season, claiming some big scalps on the journey.

If your club still does not know much about this grade, touch base and we will give you a run down.

Any club serious about developing their younger players are doing them a disservice by not at least exploring this option.

Hopefully more of our own club’s field sides moving forward, that is our vision,” McNamara said.

Umps Missing Roast Beef Roll Arvo Teas

With the COVID-19 Restrictions that were put in place this season, some were better excepted than others.

For those umpires who have been spoilt by standing at games where certain clubs may put out an arvo tea spread with such hearty meals like Roast Beef Rolls or schnitzel rolls, the transition of having to bring a “sanga” from home has been a cross too big to bear and are hoping things do finally go back to normal.

VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION (VTCA) - OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER

For those that umpire at other clubs who’s spread may include the odd box of BBQ Shapes and pack of Butter Nut Snaps, the good old home-made sandwich or roll might resemble a meal akin to a scene out of a medieval movie.
