Photo of the month

This impressive building is the Baptist tabernacle which

stood on the site of the current 'Tab' on George Street.

This was a huge building compared to the current modern

one and could seat up to 300 people. It survived for around

one hundred years until it was demolished in the 1980s.

Efforts were made by conservationists to save the buildingbut the cost of maintenance for such a large building was

way beyond the congregation at that time. A copy of the

building costs around 1870 shows that the land cost £466

(there was a house and four cottages on the site). The

Tabernacle cost £2925 and a house for the Baptist Minister

was £430. The value of voluntary labour, including 'carting

300,000 bricks' was estimated at £200. Have a look at the

current tabernacle and you will see that the original

gateposts remain.

Sponsored cycle for Mexico

Thisjune I will be cycling 55 miles with two guiding friends

on a triplet (three person bike) to raise money for an

exciting trip to Mexico. While in Mexico we will visit Our

Cabana, one of the four Guiding World Centres and run

workshops for local disadvantaged children. We each need

to raise over £1800 to enable us to take part in this specialexperience.

I have been regularly cycling into Cambridge on the back

of a tandem since I was 11 but being at the front of the

triplet is a new and wobbly venture. If you spot us trainingaround the Village, on the Guided Busway or in Cambridgeplease give us a wave!

If you feel you can support me by sponsoring us pleasedonate by going to http://www.gofundme.com/gbub0.

Additionally, for quiz lovers, I am selling a logo and sloganquiz for only £1. This can be found at the post office and

you could win a £25 Tesco voucher.

Community First Responders: call for volunteers

Willingham and Longstanton are well represented by a

dedicated team of first responders. They are called into

action by the ambulance service when this is deemed

appropriate. Hopefullysome readers can

remember when a first

responder has arrived to

help ahead of an

ambulance.

Community first

responders are ordinarymembers of the publicwho volunteer to do

something extraordinary. They give up their time to

be trained and available so

they can attend serious

medical emergencies in

their local community. The scheme is a great help to the ambulance service in a

largely rural area like ours because they can get to the scene

quickly and in cardiac arrest situation greatly improve the

chance of survival through early defibrillation.

The members of the group take it in turns to be on call

when they are available. The aim is to be on the scene

within minutes to give advanced first aid, including oxygenadministration and immediate life support. The generaltypes of calls they attend are medical emergencies such as

Pastoral Letter

ISunday of Divine Mercy

On the Sunday after Easter; the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast ofDivine Mercy. This feast was officially declared in the year 2000 bypope John Paul II who was inspired by the life and writings of Sister I

IFaustina Kowalska. This uneducated Polish nnn was asked by her spiritual director to write a diary. On about 600 pages she recorded

the revelations she received about God's Mercy. She died in I 9 3 8 but

the devotion to the Divine Mercy started to spread all over the world.ISister Faustina was canonised (declared a saint) on the first

Sunday after Easter, 30 April 2000 by the Holy Father John Paul II.

I In a decree dated 23 May 2000, the Congregation for Divine Worshipand the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that 'throughont the Iworld the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine

Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that

I mankind will experience in the years to come.' These papal acts

represent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a

private revelation. IIn the teaching of the Catholic Church, a private revelation refers

to visions and revelations from God to a specific individual or group

for their own good or that of others that have taken place since the end

of public revelations, when the last Apostle died and the New

Ttstament wascompleted. ' So called' Marian apparitions are good Iexamples of private revelations. Well known approved Marian

apparitions are our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of La Salette, Our

Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima.

Public revelation must be lived by all Catholics. Private

revelations cannot surpass, correct, improve, or complete publicrevelation. The determination of the source of private revelation is

subject to the judgment of the Catholic Church. IThe revelations on Divine Mercy received by St Faustina are not

a new teaching but a reminder of what the Church has always taughtthrough the scripture and tradition: that God is merciful and

Iforgiving and that we, too, must show mercy and forgiveness.

There is a strong link between Divine Mercy and God's Justice.

They cannot be separated. As we look at the history of the Church we

can see that sometimes in pastoral and catechetical ministry the Iaspect of divine mercy seemed to be hidden in the shadow of God's

justice. The parable of the merciful father, as it is often called today, was better known as the parable of the prodigal son. This simpleexample shows the change of the attitude leading to re-discoveringthe gift of God's Mercy.

The message of mercy is that God loves us no matter how greatour sins. He wants us to know that His mercy is greater than our sins,so that we will call upon Him with trust, accept His mercy, and let it

stream through us to others. Devotion to The Divine Mercy involves Ia total commitment to God as Mercy. It is a decision to trust

I completely in Him, to accept His mercy with thanksgiving, and to be

merciful as He is merciful. In 2002 Holy Father John Paul 11 said: Thehour has come when the message of Divine Mercy is able to fill heartswith hope and to become the spark of a new civilisation: thecivilisation of love.

New Library Opening Hours from 2 AprilAs part of the comprehensive Library Service Review, the

decision was made to review and rationalise the openinghours of all libraries in Cambridgeshire. Officers looked at

the existing opening hours and worked on new patterns, based on the demographic of the area and on usagestatistics. The figures for the catchment population were

supplied by the County Council's research team once the

wards served by individual libraries had been identified. A

fixed number of core opening hours was established for

catchment population bands. As its catchment population is

less than 7000, Willingham Library will now be open for 15

hours a week as follows:

ETHIOPIA BULLETIN - news from Valerie McKee

Well here I am in Mekelle. I feel lucky: it is such a nice

place. The streets are tree—lined and wide, (some are in

flower, some are date palms), most are tarmac and the side

streets are cobbled. It is cleaner here and there are even

ladies who sweep the streets in some parts of the town.

The only corrugated iron is around the building sites as all

the little tiny cottages are dry stone walled and some are

wattle and daub. The door posts tend to be painted brightcolours and if any more modern buildings are painted theytend to be pastel colours — no point in using white here. There are still many beggars and the poverty is here too but

I feel safer away from the hustle of the capital, Addis.

My little flat is up on the third floor, and the taxi driver

managed to carry the box and case up easily enough: keen

to carry anything on their heads or shoulders it seems.

Anyway there are no lifts anywhere so that's not an option. The guard let us in after a debate, he is very serious and

sleeps across the doorway. My new home is very basic but

just right for me and I have a little balcony for my washingand watching the world go by, which can be very interesting!I now know the old man with his two cows and goats who

passes twice a day, there are horses and carts, donkeys and

herds of cattle at different times mixed in with the

occasional car or lorry. So far I have visited f1ve schools and watched different

ages from six to 14. The classrooms are quite big and airyand the children sit on benches linked with narrow slopedtable tops two or three to a bench. Classes have ranged from

40 to 60 pupils, and in the younger ages there tend to be

more exciting posters or notices around the room. There

are many where there is nothing to look at. Today I asked

the class of 14 year—olds at the end of their lesson what

they thought of their room. Apart from being shocked bythe question, I began to get the real answers: they thought it

was a bit dull — putting it mildly I thought. Not counting the

regulation enormous blackboard across one wall it was

completely bare. I am still not sure if they know what an art

lesson is and as far as I can tell there is a subject called

'aesthetics' that covers all extra things like music and art.

Next task is to make my proper plan which I have to putto the education office and VSO: it will be fine I am sure.

They want me to get the teachers to be more active in the

class, improve results and encourage more interested

learners. It all goes together really but with such largeclasses and little resource it is a challenge. Everyone I have

met so far is really supportive and keen to change for the

better but they are not sure how to do it or where to begin. As it is everywhere, I have to be indoors by dark which is

by 6 45 pm really in order to keep safe. I can go out if I am

with a group and I am trying to get the numbers of a few

taxis I can use safely after dark but I am still not keen. In the

day I walk everywhere which can be quite a distance. Myoffice luckily is only five minutes away which is just as well

as I have to come back here to use the loo. (I won't go into

details!)I am loving all the fresh fruits and vegetables, which is just

as well as I have to shop daily pretty much (I have no

fridge). I am glad here I have a fair variety — just have to be

flexible and see what has been brought into the market. And

what I miss? Well, soft boiled eggs, (they have to be cooked

thoroughly as the flocks are not tested for anything dodgey)and being able to go out for a stroll in an evening just for

pleasure.

While cricket captain Roger Dervish (Andrew Jordan) is

desperately trying to assemble his team, his long-sufferingwife, Miriam (Debbie Hunt), is desperately trying to

assemble one of her famous cricket teas.

Although Bob (Phil Norton) only turns up to tell Rogerhe can't play, a ready substitute arrives in ageingLothario, Dennis (Chas Barclay), always eager to help out.

So when demon spinner Kevin (Martin George) and star

batsman Alex (Charlie Barclay) arrive, it looks like Rogerhas his team.

Unfortunately he has not reckoned on the players'wives and girlfriends — Maggie (Helen Foster), Ginnie

(He/en Scully) and Sharon (Megan Scully) — whose arrival

only serves to complicate matters.

This famous comedy is about relationships, marriage, hopes and dreams, with a little bit of cricket thrown in

Marathon appealI'm running the London Marathon on 22 April to raise

money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which exists to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

I'm supporting this charity as one of my close relatives

has lived with type 1 diabetes for many years, so I've seen

her battle with the unavoidable day-to-day problems and

long-term health issues it causes. Finding a cure for type 1

would have a profound effect on the lives of the millions of

people who are affected by the condition.

This is the first time I have entered a marathon and I am

training hard, five days a week, in order to make sure I

complete the course in less than four hours.

As a fellow resident of Willingham I'd like to ask for your

support by Visiting my online sponsorship page at

donations are very much appreciated.

Thank you for your support!Matthew Mason

Village News and Events

We would like to welcome our new Councillor,]im Watson

to Willingham Parish Council.

Requests have been received regarding the need for an

event to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee in june. WillinghamAction Group are currently putting together some ideas for

this. We will update you as soon as anything is finalised.

The village sign has completed its restoration followingdamage caused by wind. It is currently in its final stages of

being housed suitably for relocation within the new frame.

The Parish Council has successfully bid for some

community chest funding for a Village Map to be located on

the green. This has now been commissioned and will

highlight key locations within the village. This should prove

a great feature and be of huge benefit to those Visiting our

village. The Parish Council website is undergoing a re—launch

and if it is not already live and full of information at the

time of this publication, it will be in the very near future.

The new site will make it easier for you to find out what is

going on in the village and get involved with current

projects. www.willingham—pc.orgYou can also follow the Parish Council on twitter

AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council has

been set for 16 May at 7 30 pm in the Octagon. This is a

great opportunity for you to come along and see the varietyof groups you could get involved with within Willingham. You will be amazed at the number and diversity of them! It

is also an ideal time to come and put across your views

regarding how you would like the Parish Council to developthe area you live in. Full details will follow next month.

Police Issues

A police operation has been launched following more than

200 burglaries in rural Huntingdonshire and South Cambs

This will focus on tacklingburglaries in rural villages in the districts. Advice has been

given to reduce the risk of becoming a Victim of burglaryincluding:° Make your home look lived in when you are not in.

Consider installing light timers.

' Install an alarm — even an empty box on the side of your

in the past four months.

house can be enough to put off a burglar.° A 'beware of the dog' sign can also help put off an

intruder, regardless of whether a dog is present.' If the bins are due to be collected, ask your neighbours

to move them on and off your drive for you.° Lock your shed. Offenders don't like carrying tools as

they may be searched en—route to a burglary.

Street Lighting

You may often notice faulty lighting around the village. Some posts are identified as South Cambridgeshire District

Council and some as Cambridgeshire County Council.

There is now a central number to call to report any faults,

making it much easier to pass on this information. Simplycall 0800 783247 and quote the number on the column.

So the planning application has finally been submitted.

Sitting on my desk is a CD—ROM, which I have to confess I

haven't looked at yet, although I only received it three days

agojudging from the last Parish Forum though, there are a

huge number of documents to be read in order to try to

make sense of the application. I am not therefore going to

try to even begin to summarise the application, but rather

set out what has been happening over recent weeks and

months:

Week 1 (registration and notification of application):commenced 27 February' Once the outline application for Phase 1 and the

Development Framework Document have been

validated they will be uploaded to the Council's website

(www.scambs.gov.uk).- Hard copies of the Planning Statement and Design and

Access Statement for the Phase 1 application and the

Development Plan Document will be sent to the

following parish councils (along with CDs and hard

copies of other documents as requested); Bar Hill,

Cottenham, Dry Drayton, Girton, Histon/Impington,

Lolworth, Longstanton, Oakington and Westwick, Over,

Rampton, Swavesey and Willingham.' Hard copies of all the Northstowe documents will also

be sent to Bar Hill, Cottenham, Willingham and

Swavesey libraries, as well as the Central Library in Lion

Yard.

° An electronic pro-forma, with a link to the Northstowe

documents on the Council's website, will be sent to the

above parish councils giving them 42 days to comment

from 5 March.

° Neighbour notification letters will go out to all

properties in the villages of Cottenham, Longstanton,

Oakington and Westwick, Over, Rampton, Swavesey and

Willingham, as well as anyone living outside these

villages who commented on the previous applications.° A press notice will be put in the Cambridge New and site

notices will be put up around the site and in the

neighbouring villages. The press notice, site notices and

neighbour notification letters will all give members of

the public 42 days to comment from 5 March (thoughcomments can be submitted before then).

Week 2 (consultation period formally commenced, for

six weeks, Monday 5 March)° Representations will be accepted either Via the post or

electronically (e-mail or through the Council's website). The Council will be using the APAS system, which is the

.IOT'I'INGS FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR

system routinely used for receiving comments on all

planning applications.° The Phase 1 application and the Development

Framework Document will both be given separate

reference numbers on APAS. Documents for both the

submissions will be on the same webpage.° Where possible it will be helpful if comments were

made under the relevant reference numbers, though it is

acknowledged that there will be some issues that relate

to both submissions.

Week 3 (public exhibitions)

There have been four 'drop in' sessions in March at

Longstanton and Oakington. These were manned byDistrict and County officers, with representatives of the

Joint Promoters also attending.

Week 8 (consultation period finishes — Monday 16

April)

Officers will

Document and Phase 1 outline application against all

assess the Development Framework

relevant National and Local Planning Policies and all

material planning considerations, including those raised in

the representations from consultees and members of the

public.

Week 9

A response letter will be sent to the applicants outlining any

amendments or additional information that may be

required. If either submission is amended or additional

information is submitted further consultation will be

carried out.

It is not expected that the application will be determined

until much later in the year.

My communication arrangements

Finally, in the interests of trying to modernise my

communications, as well as Twitter, which I have been usingfor the last year, I am now also on Facebook. Contact details

for both, as well as more traditional methods are below.
