When the Pittsburgh Penguins made their splash

into free agency this past off-season, it seemed

like the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were

actually the big winners. What may have been

depth signings for the NHL club were big-time

additions for their American Hockey

League affiliate.

There were names with which Penguins fans were

all too familiar. Trevor Smith put up 12 points

against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as he helped the

Norfolk Admirals to the 2012 Calder Cup. Benn

Ferriero pretty much won the game by himself

when the Worcester Sharks down the Penguins

at the DCU Center last season. Warren Peters

played in Houston and Minnesota under former

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton assistant Mike Yeo and

also made it to back-to-back Calder Cup finals

with the Texas Stars and Aeros. Even Dylan

Reese and Phil Dupuis spent about half of the

2011-12 season in the NHL.

Whether it was justified or not the signing of Riley

Holzapfel fell under the radar. And it wasn’t for

lack of pedigree. The fifth-year pro has totaled

119 points (48-71a) in 259 AHL games and set

career high last season with 16 goals and 21

assists in just 48 appearances.

So far this year, Holzapfel has been firmly in the

spotlight as he is second on the Penguins in

scoring with 15 points. He and Beau Bennett

have recently come together to form one of the

most explosive forward combos on the team.

Holzapfel has been all over the ice and the score

sheet over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s recent stretch

at home. The first signs that something special

was brewing came on Nov. 14 as the Penguins

faced off against the top team in the league, the

Springfield Falcons. A scoreless tie in the second

period gave way to the blossoming chemistry

between Holzafpel and Bennett.

Breaking up-ice on a 2-on-1 rush, the forwards

orchestrated a give-and-go with passes that,

To say Holzapfel has kept since it going would

be an understatement. That his points continue

to amass is one thing, but the way he finds

himself involved in about every key goal is

uncanny. Go back to last Friday’s game versus

the Syracuse Crunch. The Penguins seemingly

had 3-1 comfortable lead in the third period, but

things started to get uneasy when it looked as

though they would go through seven minutes

on the power play without converting. That was

until Holzapfel got behind the defense and took

a long lead pass from Bennett for a breakaway

tally that put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton up by three.

It turned out to be a much needed goal and the

eventual game-winner as the Crunch staged a

mini-comeback before falling 5-3.

The following night the Penguins were holding

on to a 4-3 tenuous edge over the St. John’s

IceCaps when Holzalpfel through the puck into

an empty net with a minute left in the game to

officially clinch the win. At this point, it can’t be

a surprise to learn that he and Bennett also had

the assists on Benn Ferriero’s deciding marker

earlier in period.

Holzapfel can’t exactly put a finger on why he

and Bennet have had such chemistry, but he is

more than content to enjoy the results

“I like to work hard in both ends of the ice and

have some offensive skill to go with that,” said

Holzapfel. “Beau’s a great player. Under

pressure, he’s not afraid to try some risky things

that might work out. He just has a lot of skill and

it has been fun playing with him.”

Holzapfel helped the team to a 10-2 record in

November and a win to start off this month. He

may have been an unknown coming into the

season, but as Holzapfel continues to come up

big in big moments, everyone in Penguins Nation

now knows exactly who he is.

seemed to impossibly traverse the entirety of

the Falcons zone. Despite the degree of

difficulty, Bennett deposited Holzapfel’s feed to

the back of the net and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

had a 1-0 lead.

Later in the period, the pairing struck again.

After a stellar keep-in at the Springfield blueline

by Dylan Reese, Holzalpel found himself with

the puck on his stick on top of the near circle.

Seeing Bennett set up camp near the left post,

Holzapfel wristed a shot that went off the

blocker of goalie Curtis McElhinney and directly

to his linemate for the easy rebound goal. It

proved to the game-winner in a 2-1 victory for

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

“He has been putting himself in good situations

where he has been playing a detailed game and

a thorough game,” commented Hynes. “His

work ethic has been high and so he’s been

finding himself in positions during the game

where he can make big plays.”

When the Penguins were back at home after

Thanksgiving, Holzapfel was on display

once again.

In yet another tense match-up versus one of

the better teams in the AHL, the Penguins

found themselves in a 1-1 dead heat with the

Toronto Marlies. With his team on the power

play late in regulation, Holzapfel made sure it

would be a happy locker room after the game.

Finding some space in the slot, Holzapfel tipped

Simon Despres’ point shot down and watched

it bounce off the ice and over the leg pad of

goalie Ben Scrivens. It was yet another win for

the Pens and a key play at an important time by

Holzapfel.

LEGENDS

The American Hockey League is enjoying its 77th season of play in 2012-13, continuing a tradition of excellence that began in 1936 when the Canadian-American Hockey League merged with the International Hockey League to form what is today known as the AHL. Eight teams hit the ice that first season, playing in Buffalo, Cleveland, New Haven, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Providence, Springfield and Syracuse.

Frank Calder, the National Hockey League’s president at the time, was instrumental in the forming of the new league, and his name would be given to its championship trophy. The first Calder Cup was won by the Syracuse Stars in 1937; the 76th championship was captured by the Norfolk Admirals last spring.

STARS

COACHES

Over the past three-quarters of a century, the American Hockey League has been home to some of the greatest players in the history of our sport. In fact, more than 100 honored members of the Hockey Hall of Fame have been affiliated with the AHL during their careers. All-time greats like George Armstrong, Toe Blake, Gump Worsley, Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall, Brad Park, Ken Dryden and Brett Hull came through the AHL ranks and now find themselves enshrined in Toronto, and the coveted Calder Cup trophy is inscribed with the names of legendary AHL alumni like Patrick Roy, Larry Robinson, Gerry Cheevers, Andy Bathgate,Tim Horton, Al Arbour, Emile Francis, Doug Harvey and Billy Smith.

The American Hockey League has created its own legends as well, and in 2006 began honoring them with the formation of the AHL Hall of Fame. The seventh class of inductees, recognized in 2012, included Joe Crozier, Jack Gordon, John Stevens and Zellio Toppazzini. They join the likes of Johnny Bower, Fred Glover, Jody Gage, Mitch Lamoureux, Willie Marshall, Frank Mathers, Eddie Shore, Bruce Boudreau, Tim Tookey and others as distinguished members of the American Hockey League Hall of Fame.

The AHL All-Star Classic showcases the league’s top talent each year in an All-Star Skills Competition and All-Star Game. The 2013 Dunkin’ Donuts AHL All-Star Classic will be held in Providence, R.I., on January 27-28, featuring the Eastern Conference All-Stars battling the Western Conference All-Stars in an event to be televised live across the U.S. and Canada.

Of the 597 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 92 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Dan Boyle, Daniel Briere, Ryan Callahan, Brian Campbell, Chris Kunitz, Zach Parise, Bobby Ryan, Martin St. Louis, Eric Staal and Tomas Vokoun.

FANS

PLAYERSHISTORY

In today’s National Hockey League, more than 88 percent of the players are AHL alumni, including 2012 Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators and Selke Trophy recipient Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins. The 2012 Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings were stocked with AHL graduates as well, among them Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Dustin Penner, Jarret Stoll, Willie Mitchell and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Quick.

During the 2011-12 season, more than 850 AHL alumni played in the National Hockey League, including 329 who skated in both leagues last year alone. Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle, Ottawa’s Jason Spezza and Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux were among the 11 AHL graduates who led their NHL teams in scoring, and former AHL All-Stars Pekka Rinne, Kari Lehtonen and Ryan Miller were among the 28 AHL goaltending alumni who paced their NHL clubs in victories. More than 200 former first- and second-round draft picks developed their skills in the AHL last season, including 2012 AHL All-Stars Kyle Palmieri, Thomas Hickey, Brandon Pirri, Colby Robak, Alex Plante and Zack Kassian.

Attendance was up nearly 5 percent in 2011-12 as 6.4 million fans attended games; since 2001, AHL games have been played before more than 72 million fans in arenas across North America. The Hershey Bears paced the league for the sixth year in a row, averaging 9,872 fans per game last season, and outdoor showcases in Philadelphia (45,653 - an all-time AHL record) and Hamilton (20,565 - largest ever for AHL in Canada) set league attendance marks.

Penguins Prospects Head to National Team Tryouts

With the 2013 World Junior Championship less

than a month away, the team selection process

began this week as invitations for national team

tryouts were announced. The 2013 WJC will run

from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Ufa, Russia and could

feature a number of prospects from the

Pittsburgh Penguins.

Defensemen Scott Harrington and Derrick Pouliot

are among 37 players invited to Team Canada’s

National Junior Team selection camp, which

will take place Dec. 11-13, 2012 at the Markin

MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park

in Calgary.

Harrington, 19, is looking to make his

second-straight WJC appearance for Canada

after helping the Canadians earn a bronze medal

last year with four points (1G-3A) and a plus-7

rating in five games during the ’12 WJC in

Edmonton and Alberta, Canada.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Harrington is in his first

year as team captain for the London Knights –

who own the best record in the Ontario Hockey

League (OHL) – and has notched eight points

(1G-7A) in 30 games.

A native of Kingston, Ontario, Harrington was

drafted by Pittsburgh in the second round

(54th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft.

An OHL First-Team All-Star last season,

Harrington has appeared in 196 career OHL

regular-season contests for London, tallying 70

points (11G-59A) and posting a plus-47 rating.

Harrington has added 10 points (1G-9A) in 37 OHL

playoff games. He helped London reach the

final of the Memorial Cup last spring, where

the Knights fell to Shawinigan in the

championship contest.

Pouliot, 18, will be attending his first selection

camp. He has previously represented Team

Canada at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial

Tournament, where he earned a gold medal, and

the 2010 Under-17 Challenge when he was

named to the tournament all-star team.

This season, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound blueliner

has helped the Portland Winterhawks of the

Western Hockey League (WHL) to that league’s

best record by ranking fifth on the squad – and

first among D-men – with 27 points (6G-21A) and

a plus-19 rating through 28 games. Pouliot’s 19

assists also lead team blueliners.

Pouliot, who was selected by Pittsburgh in the

first round (8th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft at

CONSOL Energy Center with the choice acquired

from Carolina in the Jordan Staal trade, has

totaled 115 points (22G-93A) in 172 career WHL

regular-season games. He has added 21 points

(4G-17A) in 43 postseason games.

Defenseman Olli Maatta was named to Finland’s

selection camp roster. The 6-foot-2, 206-pound

Maatta will be looking to appear in his third-

straight WJC. Maatta, who was chosen by the

Penguins with their second first-round pick (22nd

overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft, ranks fourth on

London – and first among defensemen – with 24

points (3G-21A) in 30 games.

Last season, the native of Jyvaskyla, Finland led

all London defensemen in scoring with 32 points

(5G-27A) in 58 contests.

Zlobin, 19, will be auditioning for a spot on

Russia’s entry at the 2013 WJC. The 19 year-old

has ranked among the top offensive performers

in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

(QMJHL) this year in his first season with the Val

d’ Or Foreurs following an offseason trade. He

currently ranks third on the team with 37 points

(14G-23A) in 27 games.

The 5-foot-11, 189-pound Zlobin, who hails from

Moscow, has been red hot over the past two

months, tallying at least one point in 19 of his last

21 games played for a total of 33 points

(11G-22A) – including a 15-game point streak

between Oct. 7-Nov. 14.

Last season, the 2012 sixth-round (173rd overall)

draft pick enjoyed a breakout campaign with the

Shawinigan Cataractes, tallying team-best totals

with 40 goals (making him 1 of just 6 players in

the QMJHL to reach that number) and 76 points

in his second year playing in North America.

Zlobin was instrumental in helping the Cataractes

earn a Memorial Cup championship as the top

team in the CHL. In addition to scoring both of his

team’s goals in the decisive victory over London,

he led all players in the tournament with five

goals in six games, while his nine points ranked

second (tied) overall. Zlobin also added 10 points

(3G-7A) in 11 QMJHL postseason contests.
