We enjoy the bull business but the best part is definitely the people we meet and

the friends we make. We appreciate your interest in our program.

We would be pleased to have you join us Monday May 6th at Faith Livestock for

our annual bull sale. Selling will be 70 impressive yearling bulls and 55 first-time

offered potent two-year old bulls.

Our goal continues to be providing you with the most proven profitable genet-

ics available, allowing you to produce sale-topping feeder cattle; and most of all,

efficient, productive females. Every bull in our sale is out of highly proven AI sires,

taking as much risk out of your bull selection as possible.

We are excited to have Pfizer’s High Density 50K Global Report available for each

bull and believe that it will be an important tool in your selection process. Prior to

this you could view the animal and his performance records; now, Pfizer’s 50K

report allows you to see his genetic merit.

The bulls were run on dry-range conditions with no creep feed and have been

wintered on a low-carb, high roughage, total mixed ration.

Semen Testing and Ultrasound Data: The bulls will be fertility tested and scrotal measured by Bill Hines, DVM. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day.

Guarantee:Wilken Angus guarantees all bulls against any injury that would keep them from being a breeder for the first breeding season. If a problem occurs, return the bull and a full credit will be given toward next year’s bull sale, or a suitable replacement will be provided if available. The buyer will choose the preferred option. All claims must be made by 9-1-13.

Similar to EPDs, MVPs rank animals for genetic merit and are expressed as deviations in performance from a set base-point for each trait. One-half of the difference in genomic breeding values between animals is transmitted to offspring.

Percentile Rankings (%)Percent ranks are based on the animal’s MVP for each trait as compared to the overall population of Black and Red Angus animals with HD 50K Global MVPs in the Pfizer global database. Rank values indicate the ‘top’ position of the animal in the population, with lower values generally indicating higher and more favorable genetic merit for most traits.

Calving Ease Direct (CED) - % - Describes differences in genetic merit for the likelihood of unassisted births in first-calf heifers, expressed as a trait of the progeny. Higher MVP values and lower ranks are preferred, especially when selecting sires for use on replace-ment heifers for easier calving progeny.

Birth Weight (BW) - pounds - Quantifies genetic differences in birth weight, with lower and moderate MVP values and ranks generally desired for ease of calving.

Weaning Weight (WW) - pounds - Measures difference in genetic merit for adjusted 205-day weaning weight, with higher MVP and lower rank values indicating heavier weights.

Yearling Weight (YW) - pounds - Indicates differences in breeding value for adjusted 365-day weight, with higher MVPs and lower ranks equating to genetics for heavier yearling weights.

Mature Height (MH) - inches - Measures genetic variation in mature cow height, with higher MVPs and lower ranks indicating genet-ics for taller mature cows.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI) - Pounds of Feed (Dry Matter) Consumed Per Day - Quantifies genetic differences for feed intake while on feedlot finishing rations. MVPs and ranks for DMI should be evaluated in relation to genetic merit for output traits, especially including MVPs and ranks for yearling and carcass weight (YW and CW).

Residual Feed Intake (RFI) - Pounds of Feed (Dry Matter) Consumed Per Day – Compared to Expected Consumption - Describes genetic variation in weight of dry matter consumed per day, as compared to expected feed consumption based on body weight and growth rate. Lower MVP and rank values are desired, and identify genetics for less feed intake for the same amount of weight gain.

Milking Ability (MA)- Pounds of Weaning Weight (WW) - Evaluates differences in genetic merit for the maternal component of calf weaning weight, predominantly due to milking ability of dams (or daughters). Genetic potential for milking ability should be matched to available feed resources, which implies that intermediate MVP and rank values are likely optimum for many production systems.

Scrotal Circumference (SC) - Centimeters - Describes genetic differences in age at puberty as indicated by adjusted yearling scrotal circumference. Larger MVPs and lower ranks for scrotal circumference equate to genetics for earlier and more desirable age at puberty in both bulls and heifers.

Docility (DOC) - % - Quantifies genetic differences in the probability of acceptable (calm) versus unacceptable (wild) temperament. Higher MVPs and lower ranks mean greater likelihood of more manageable disposition.

Ribeye Area (REA) - Inches - Describes genetic variation in carcass muscularity as measured by ribeye area between the 12th and 13th rib, at a constant age. Larger MVPs and lower ranks for ribeye area favorably impact USDA yield grades and associated carcass premi-ums.

Marbling Score (MS) - USDA Score Units - Quantifies genetic differences in USDA marbling scores at a constant age, with higher MVPs and lower ranks indicating higher levels of marbling and generally more desirable quality grades and associated carcass premiums.

Molecular Value Prediction - Feedlot Index ($MVPFL) - Predicts net return from combined genetic merit for feedlot (FL) gain, dry matter intake, carcass weight, as well as USDA quality and yield grades (marbling, rideye area and fat thickness). The index assumes ap-proximately 160 days on feed consuming concentrate rations and carcass value derived from a Certified Angus Beef (CAB) grid. Higher MVPs and lower ranks indicate more desirable combined genetic merit.
