Betty’s RetirementBetty White, one of our most dedicated volunteers, decided that after ten years she would “retire.” We tried to talk her out of it but to no avail. She joined our program after her first retirement from ExxonMobil and helped us two full days a week. Betty went through hurricanes and floods with us, did a ton of dishes and cleaned cages, fed and tended to innumerable baby squirrels and birds, wrote bunches of thank you notes, took our Kestrel out on glove at public

events, and basically made herself invaluable to us. The good news is that she plans to come back to help us with open houses and to stop by to visit upon occasion. We will always be very happy to see her come through the door!

This April, Pensacola experienced a storm none of us will soon forget. Many families and businesses lost so much in the extreme flooding. Six months has passed and things are almost getting back to normal for folks around town. The repairs to the Wildlife Sanctuary are finally complete and slowly we are putting things back together. We just wanted to take a moment to acknowl-edge and thank our amazing supporters, volunteers and staff, as well as commend the community as a whole for supporting each other during this crisis. All of us here at the Sanctuary are continuously amazed at the generosity of the people we choose to call our friends and neighbors! A Million Thanks!!

Hidden Holiday Dangers…The holidays are for family and friends….for sharing good food and good times with those we adore. Caution is in order however, as there are many hazards lurking around the holidays, especially for our friends of the “furry” variety. Each year, thousands of animals needlessly suffer from the accidental ingestion of common household items and poisons. Many holiday plants, with their brilliant and colorful flowers, are extremely beautiful, but can extremely deadly to animals. Did you know that even one single leaf from any lily variety could be lethal to a cat? Here are some others to avoid:

• Amaryllis• Azaleas• Christmas tree pine needles• Chrysanthemums• Holly• Mistletoe• Poinsettias

Over the counter pain relievers are also extremely dangerous for critters. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen both cause liver and kidney failure in cats and dogs. One small tablet is fatal for a cat…so please be careful when dispensing and handling these medicines in your home and dispose of them properly if they are expired, knowing that our curious critters may raid the trash can.Did you know that as few as seven grapes can be toxic to dogs? The effects can last for days, weeks or even be fatal.

Some other toxic foods include avocados, chocolate, coffee, raisins, nutmeg, onions, garlic, raw salmon, and the sugar substitute Xylitol, which is found in many sugar-free candies.Birds are highly sensitive to fumes from ordinary household candles, as well as from many holiday craft products. Cleaning chemicals, of course, pose a threat for animals and birds of all kinds, if not used properly.A little caution goes a long way to ensuring our furry family members enjoy their holidays as well. Happy Happy Holidays!
