Flash cards can be a good tool to help your students assign food items to the appropriate Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) food categories and to learn what species of wildlife eat foods in that particular food category. Use the following pages to make flash cards by cutting the horizontal lines and folding the papers. (Reference pp 118 & 119, Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program, National Handbook). It can be especially effective to have a peer educator (student showing the cards who can see the answers) count to five for each card. If the learner gets it right, it goes in the “fast” pile, if it takes a little longer, put the card in the “medium” pile, and if they don’t know, put the card in the “no” pile. Concentrate follow-up study efforts on the “medium” and “no” piles. THE CONTEST When students attend the WHEP Career Development Event (CDE), actual food specimens (not pictures) will be displayed on a table (see Figure 1). Students need to identify what food category is represented by the specimen. Students will write this food category on the top of the score sheet (Scantron sheet, see Figure 2) and then mark the appropriate boxes that represent the wildlife species that eat this category of food. Pages 116-119 of the Wildlife Habitat Program National Handbook list food categories and the species that eat each food category. The same species are listed on the backs of the flash cards, making it much easier for the students to learn this material. Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Food Flash Cards PURDUE EXTENSION 4-H-993-W

THE CONTEST

When students attend the WHEP Career Development Event (CDE), actual food specimens (not pictures) will be displayed on a table (see Figure 1).
