Chapter House Safety

Doors and WindowsAlways be sure that your doors and windows are locked when you leave your room and building. While leaving the window open provides a nice breeze in November, it also provides a nice entrance for criminals. In addition, there have been incidents where students have fallen out of open windows, resulting in serious injuries, deaths, and law suits.

Chapter House Safety

Propped DoorsPropped doors are the easiest ways for intruders to enter your home. Please ensure that doors close behind you and never prop a door because you will be back “in a minute”. It only takes a second for someone else to enter.

ExitsEmergency exits are intended for emergencies. Please do not use them for a “faster” way out of the building, trash chute, or to smoke.

Chapter House SafetyDoor Codes/Keys/Fobs

Doors codes, keys, and fobs are to be only given out to ACTIVE members of the chapter. For your safety, it is imperative that only current members of the

organization have access to the building. All visitors should be escorted into the building and not be given the key or code.

Capacity for Social EventsIt is important that the chapter follows the capacity guidelines set by the fire

department. Over-capacity is a fire hazard that could make exiting the building in an emergency a dangerous situation. To find out the capacity of your chapter

house, you can contact OFSL.

Chapter House SafetyPatios/FratiosThe Patios and Fratios are not intended for individuals to sit on or hang from them, as they were not built to support human weight.

CamerasAll chapter houses are now equipped with security cameras. Please utilize entrances with this security feature, and under no circumstance, should you block the cameras.

AwarenessWhen coming home, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. This innocent woman is on her phone and did not see this strange man about to attack her. Other suggestions include:• Have your keys at the ready when you get home so you can open the doors quickly. • Always escort your guests and visitors at all times in your building.

Fire HazardsFire DepartmentThe goal of the Fire Department is to prevent fires and life-loss through the finest in fire protection, rescue, emergency medical services, and fire prevention services. Therefore, jokes such as a discharged fire extinguisher are taken in a serious nature.

Fire SprinklersFire Sprinklers are required in each chapter house as of December 2008. Hanging items from the pipes can cause damage. When properly maintained, they can save your life, and all of your belongings in the event of a fire.

FireplacesFireplaces are wonderful in winter, but please ensure that the fire is not left unattended When the fire is done, check to make sure that is has been properly tamed.

Fire HazardsChapter House Hazards •When decorating your room a number of items are not safe, including lit candles, holiday or decorative lights, hanging blankets, flags, banners, tapestries, rugs or fishnets.

• Never cover up smoke detectors or tamper with other safety equipment. If these detectors are triggered, they will activate a fire alarm for the entire building.

• If you smell gas in the house, it is important to call 911. Keep in mind, if a pilot light is out or the stove has been left on, you will smell an odor of gas. It is everyone’s responsibility to be cautious and check.

• Grills should be kept outside and if you need to bring the grill inside for storage, the propane tank must be left outside. Keep all charcoal and lighter fluid in a safe place. If your chapter house has an awning, the grill should NOT be stored on the porch.

Location of Safety Equipment

AlarmsResidential areas should have red fire alarm pull boxes and smoke detectors. Pulling down on the center lever activates the alarm box. Residents should be careful not to bump the box, as it may activate the alarm.

Fire ExtinguishersFire extinguishers are located through the building and in any areas with cooking equipment. Be aware of their location in case of emergency.

Exiting Advice •When a fire alarm sounds you will want to exit the building as quickly as possible. Leave the valuables behind, and don’t wait for the floor to get hot to leave.• Sometimes your nearest exit may be an exterior exit stairwell on the side of your residence.• All residents are required to exit the building EVERY TIME an alarm sounds. Remember, you never know if it is a real fire!

Drugs/AlcoholCampus Policies• Alcohol and drugs of any form are not permitted in chapter houses on campus.* •Students under the age of 21 may not consume, possess, or be in the presence of alcohol in fraternity and sorority houses and in the Evanston community.

•For more complete list of policies, reference the student handbook.

Binge Drinking•Binge drinking is the number one health problem at America’s colleges. Here are some important facts that could save yours or your friends life:• Your body can eliminate the alcohol from a 12-ounce can of beer in about one hour (or 1¼ oz. of 80-proof liquor, or 4 oz. of table wine). • Signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning include: Confusion, stupor, vomiting, slow or irregular breathing, blue-tinged skin or pale skin, or unconsciousness.• For more information on how alcohol effects individuals, visit: www.gordie.org

*With the exception of one facility, as of September 2008.

HazingCampus Policies• Policy Prohibiting Hazing from Northwestern University  Student Handbook:

The University forbids hazing and all other activities that interfere with the personal liberty of an individual. The University defines hazing as any action taken or situation created, whether on or off University premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule for the purpose of initiation into, affiliation with, or admission to, or as a condition for continued membership in, a group, team, club, or other organization.

Acceptance of an activity on the part of a new member or individual does not justify participation in or sponsorship of the activity.

Any violation of this policy should be reported to the dean of students or the Office of Judicial Affairs.
