WiChorus Element Management System (EMS)
To fully leverage investments in WiMAX and emerging 4G wireless networks, carriers need
effective tools for managing and monitoring subscribers, services and core infrastructure.
Such management tools enable carriers to capitalize on new revenue generating services,
streamline operational costs and ensure network availability. These capabilities are
increasingly important as carriers embrace new models, such as mobile internet services,
and require intelligent control of their wireless infrastructure to deliver a premium user
experience and ensure profitability.
The WiChorus Element Management System (EMS) provides carriers a comprehensive
solution for managing their wireless core networks, exploiting the full capabilities of the
WiChorus SmartCoreTM platforms. The WiChorus EMS software provides a highly scalable
solution with intuitive user interface that simplifies fault management, configuration
management and monitoring of network elements and subscribers. Detailed performance
and statistics information are gathered providing a useful summary of network activity and

WiChorus SmartCore Platforms
WiChorus network elements support robust embedded
management features, including industry-standard com-
mand-line interface (ClI), SNMP and BulkStats for efficient
retrieval of information. Integration with 3rd party NMS or
OSS systems is facilitated through direct interfaces to the
network elements or northbound CORBA or SNMP interfaces
from the EMS. The WiChorus solution enables carriers to
automate repetitive tasks, rapidly respond to conditions in
the network, and proactively manage subscribers and services.
Architecture
The WiChorus EMS is a robust client/server software sys-
tem that is designed to support large scale networks. The
modular architecture enables the distribution of functional-
ity across one or more servers to provide optimal perfor-
mance and redundancy. For example, EMS front-end pro-
cessing can be offloaded to a separate server to support
a very large number of clients. Additionally, the mediation
function, which aggregates information from network ele-
ments, can be distributed to regional servers, to streamline
processing of overall network information.
The EMS supports multiple concurrent users leveraging
Java client software supporting a rich graphical user inter-
face. Communication with network elements is through
industry standard SNMP, along with BulkStats operations
to efficiently gather real time statistics and monitoring
information across a range of network elements and sub-
scribers. WiChorus accommodates interfaces to 3rd party
NMS or OSS platforms through a northbound CORBA inter-
face, along with SNMP.
The EMS server can be deployed in combination with an
Oracle database providing further flexibility in designing
robust management solutions. . A primary and secondary
EMS server can be simultaneously linked to the database
server to ensure continuous operation should one of the
EMS systems fail. The Oracle database server itself can
also be deployed in a variety of redundant configurations
to ensure maximum availability.
Intuitive User Interface
The WiChorus EMS provides a rich user interface with intui-
tive navigation to help streamline operational costs. The
system supports multiple views of the network, including a
convenient tree-based view along with a graphical network
view showing the overall network topology. With a compre-
hensive view of the network, service providers can quickly
navigate to find information they need and drill down for
additional detail as required. The EMS maintains a com-
prehensive, real-time chassis view of each node displaying
lED state, high availability state and CPU utilization. This
enables users to view equipment in the network as if they
were physically right next to the device.

The WiChorus EMS leverages unique hierarchical table
views with search and filtering capabilities that simplify
navigation of large amounts of information, such as sub-
scriber stations. These advanced tabular views enable
operators to sift through several levels of hierarchy from
a single window, enabling them to quickly zero-in on the
information they are looking for without cumbersome click-
throughs. Operators are also kept abreast of the most
critical network information on the top-level screen through
a series of summary panes that track overall fault and per-
formance activity. Such summary views ensure key issues
are elevated to receive the attention they deserve without
flooding users with excessive data.
Network Configuration
The WiChorus EMS provides user-friendly screens for
configuring all WiChorus elements in the network.
Configuration information is stored within the EMS data-
base, as well as being pushed onto the network elements.
The solution provides a built-in backup of each node’s
configuration for purposes of restoration and recovery
should a network failure occur. Repetitive configuration
can be efficiently handled through the WiChorus system,
as one node’s configuration can be used to help configure
other nodes in the network when only a few pieces of infor-
mation need to be changed. In addition to node specific
configuration, the WiChorus EMS has user friendly screens
designed to accommodate configuration of network-wide
policies, such as content management, spectral manage-
ment or traffic management.
Subscriber Management
Playing a key role in subscriber management, the
WiChorus SmartCore platforms provide a wealth of infor-
mation regarding individual subscribers and their associated
traffic. The WiChorus EMS captures this information to
provide service providers a central view of key subscriber
attributes, such as addressing assignments, QoS profiles,
wireless state (active/idle), location and traffic statistics.
In addition, service providers can configure policies, such
as address assignment, traffic management or security on
a per subscriber basis.
Performance Management
The WiChorus EMS provides graphical monitoring tools for
displaying a wide range of real time statistics collected
from WiChorus nodes and subscriber stations. Service
providers can customize these charts to ensure they meet
the needs of their day-to-day operation. In addition, intui-
tive Key Performance Indicator (KPI) dashboards provide a
convenient tool for real-time monitoring of critical metrics,
such as CPU utilization, network size, and traffic metrics.
These powerful tools enable service providers to manage
and deploy large scale networks, while maintaining visibil-
ity of overall performance of the network at various levels.

Administration
The WiChorus EMS provides service providers a robust
solution for managing administrative access to the system.
Individual user accounts can be created with varying levels
of access, and the system provides extensive tracking and
logging for each user. These capabilities ensure flexibility
and accountability in managing user authentication.
The WiChorus EMS also supports comprehensive image
management, ensuring minimal disruption for service pro-
viders as they upgrade their networks. With dual image
support on all WiChorus network elements, new software
can be downloaded at any time while activation of the new
image can be custom configured by the user. This enables
proactive scheduling of network upgrades with minimal
disruption to the operational network. Any failure of the
image within the node will cause the system to revert to
the original image, to ensure stability in the network.
Fault Management
The WiChorus EMS provides real time event reporting,
intelligent response mechanisms, and intuitive visual
indicators allowing for swift resolution of network issues.
Alarms can be generated based on a single event or based
on a collection of related events. They can be assigned dif-
ferent severity levels, and can trigger unique actions based
on the defined severity level, such as initiating an email,
page or executing a command. Alarms can be filtered
and sorted by source, criticality, or time/date. Intuitive
visual indicators at the highest-level view through the most
detailed product view enable service providers to quickly
identify and isolate faults in the network.
Policy Management & Network Intelligence:
leveraging extensive DPI capabilities in the SmartCore
platforms, the WiChorus EMS allows operators to eas-
ily analyze and manage their network based on content.
Policies can be defined to identify specific applications,
including Peer-to-Peer traffic, and perform statistics cap-
ture, traffic policing, QoS prioritization or filtering based
on this content. Policies can be configured with extensive
granularity and distributed and enforced across the net-
work. The policy management and network intelligence
features of the EMS simplify network-wide monitoring and
enforcement of internet traffic policies.
