As this season began for the Germantown boys basket-ball team, the Warhawks were on the verge of breaking aconsecutive wins record a record that was set during a dif-ferent era for Wisconsin high school sports.

Looked at another way, they were on the verge ofbreaking two records.

Public and private high schools played under separate

sanctioning bodies until 2000, when schools in theWisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association(WISAA) were brought into the Wisconsin InterscholasticAthletic Association (WIAA).

Prior to that time, there were separate championshipsfor public and private schools.

The consecutive winning streak record for publicschools was 60, set by Milwaukee Lincoln from 1960-63.The overall record of 63 wins was set by Dominican HighSchool from 1977-80.

As the 2011-12 season began for Germantown, theWarhawks came off a 24-2 record, with the last loss com-ing in a dubious manner. At a March 15, 2011 SuperTuesday game at the UW-Oshkosh Kolf Center,Germantown and Appleton East were tied at 52-52 in theclosing seconds following a missed free throw. A reboundoff the missed free throw was first ruled to have been recov-ered by Germantown, with Germantown calling a time outwith 3.8 seconds remaining. But the call was reversed, giv-

ing possession to East. On the ensuing inbounds play, amissed shot was then put back in by East for a 54-52 win, though video replay showed the game clock did not starton time.

When the ball (the first shot) was in the air, it seems likethe horn should have sounded. But I cant fix it,Germantown Coach Steve Showalter told reporters after-ward. You play until the whistle blows, you play until thehorn blows. Weve got to get that rebound.

Germantown has not lost since. The Warhawks passed

the Milwaukee Lincoln record with an 88-42 win atCedarburg Dec. 13. Germantown then broke the all-timerecord with a 90-63 win over Milwaukee Lutheran Dec. 17.

Following Germantowns win over Milwaukee Lutheran,Showalter was asked if he remembered the last loss.

I do remember it, I remember it way too well. Thatspart of the reason why we keep trying to push this thing,Showalter said.

That thing has netted Germantown two state champi-

onships along with a breaking records that were mthree decades old.

While happy with the record, Showalter stayedon the next games ahead.

Its a sense of relief with that number, but welot of work to do yet, he said.

In the two games since, Germantown continuedadding to a streak that is more than two years old

"This is kind of a nice break inDecember (and) we're going to try to keepthis going," he said. "We're not all aboutwins, we're not all about win streaks. We'reall about good kids and doing things theright way, and good people. We've hadgood people here for a lot of years."

Showalter added that the record "is notjust a tribute to this team and these boyshere, this is a tribute to all the kids that have

busted their rear ends here in this gym for usand all the kids that got this thing startedand made it a lot easier on some of rest ofthese guys. They've done a great job andwe hope to keep making you guys proudand making you guys happy and keep thisthing going."

Afterward, Showalter noted that hissons Zak and Jake have been part of theprogram and it has been "a family thing."

"All these things have been family,"Showalter said.

Showalter, who became Germantowncoach during the 2000-01 season, toldmedia his team set the bar" with deep runsin the sectional bracket starting in 2006-07followed by a few state tournament appear-ances.

"We've had wonderful kids and won-derful players all the way through,"Showalter said, mentioning Ben Averkamp,

Josh Mongan, Dan Studer and Luke Fischeralong with players on this year's team.

"I could name 50 guys that mean somuch to this program and really helpedbuild this thing," Showalter said. He alsomentioned the work of his assistant coachesthroughout the years.

Several former players were in atten-dance at the game.

Heaney said the lesson from the streakis "practicing hard every day. Coming towork hard and playing as a team."

Heaney's comment was echoed byLamonte Bearden, a senior on this yearsteam.

"We just came and worked hardereach day and Coach told us that we canget better each day. We just have to workon everything in practice and get better, "Bearden said.

Center Evan Wesenberg also cited thework done at practice and noted that play-ers play in summer leagues and on AAUteams during the offseason.

"We definitely know each one of ourstrengths and weaknesses so we play toour advantage," Wesenberg said. "Wehave a good team chemistry."

worry about the record last. It's just anothergame and we come out and give it our alland play together," Bearden said.

Wesenberg also said that "we alwaysfocus on the game we have now and it wasthe game we have now, so it's the biggestgame.

The team stayed in the gym for severalmore minutes signing autographs onposters that we handed out to fans.

Showalter explained the different reac-tion between continuing a winning streakduring the regular season as opposed towinning a state championship.

"When you win a championship you'redone for the year and you go home andcelebrate," Showalter said. "Well, tomor-

row afternoon at 2:30 p.m. we're going tobe in here trying to get better. There's asense of relief with that number (breakingthe consecutive winning streak record), butwe've got a lot of work to do yet. We've gotto get busy."

Germantown continued to add onto thestreak later in the week. The Warhawkstopped Grafton 73-50 Dec. 20, as JakeShowalter led Germantown with 25 points. The next evening, at the Al McGuireClassic, Germantown scored the first sevenpoints of the game and followed that with a23-4 run in the second quarter to win 68-44.
