Why you’ve never made serious money
on Ebay
A bit brutal, but true. If you’ve bought this book, chances are you’ve not made any serious money selling your product or goods on Ebay. In my opinion, Ebay is the most amazing trading revolution in the past 25 years. It allows traders to reach a vast market of around 10 million people (I believe) worldwide! Can you imagine how much that would cost you in TV advertising? To be honest it wouldn’t really be possible using any other media. However, how many people do you think are making serious money from selling on Ebay? For a start I wouldn’t class serious money as millions or even hundreds of thousands. My definition of serious money (in terms of Ebay) would simply be enough to live on. Maybe £25 or £35 thousand a year. Trading on Ebay is fine if you want a bit of beer money or an extra holiday a year.
Just for fun, see if you have done any (or all) of the following:
1. Bought a CD-ROM or e-book with resell rights to sell on? 2. Bought a ‘job lot’ on Ebay with the intention of selling on? 3. Found an external supplier and bought off them to sell on Ebay? 4. Bought items from Ebay, reworded the description and re-sold them
on Ebay? If you have done any of the above chances are you made a few quid. Maybe two or three hundred in a year? Probably the most success you’ve ever had on Ebay was when you sold items that you no longer wanted from your own home!
If I’m wrong then I apologise, but I think if you’re honest you’ll agree that this is a pretty accurate picture of your history of trading on Ebay. How do I know? BECAUSE I’VE DONE IT MYSELF, AND MADE NOTHING BUT EMBARRASSINGLY SMALL AMOUNTS OF MONEY. I think I’ve actually lost more than I’ve made. Makes you cringe, doesn’t it? I’ve wasted a great deal of time, money, effort and sweat trying to start my own Ebay business. I’ve LOST money selling items at less than I’ve paid for them when I’ve only had one bidder on my auction. I’ve lost money in listing fees, ISP charges, shipping costs, buying worthless stock to sell on and almost lost my relationship because I spent all my spare time in front of the PC trying to start my Ebay business!
Does this ring any bells? Then one day I realised why. It didn’t come in a blinding flash with angels singing and trumpets blowing. It came slowly. At first I didn’t believe what I’d found. It was so simple, yet no one else had realised it. Eventually I sussed out that obviously there were traders who had also realised what I’d found out, and guess what – they were the ones making the money. Quietly away, with little fuss, these guys (and gals) were raking in cash doing exactly what I’m about to tell you. I suspect that when you know this, you won’t sing and dance or shout it from the rooftops, you’ll smile gently and go about your business quietly and without fuss. Then, you can start making serious money. You probably won’t want to sell this e-book (even though the R&R rights are included). In fact, up to now (May 2004) I haven’t had a SINGLE person sell this e-book using the R&R rights. Is that because they want to keep it quiet, or they’re too busy making money elsewhere? You decide. All the information you need to start is contained in this book, INCLUDING a lot of information that it took me a LOT of time and effort to find. That’s all listed in Appendix 1. Where do you get a bargain? My missus is an avid ‘Cold Feet’ fan. She’s got the full series on DVD, except the 2nd series. Being a kind caring sort of chap I said I’d buy it for her. Where’s the first place I looked? Exactly – Ebay. It’s easy to shop (from the comfort of your PC) and most importantly, it’s cheap. Woolworths were selling the DVD (although I had to go to three different stores to locate it) for just under £20. I didn’t buy it there. I logged on to Ebay, used the search facility and Hey Presto! I had a choice of five or six sellers, offering the DVD I wanted, still boxed and sealed. I got it for £8, not including P&P. All from home. It arrived 48 hours later, and I even got good feedback into the bargain! Perfect? For me, Yes. For a seller, NO!
In the UK wholesale list in appendix 1 you’ll find contacts of where to buy the cheapest DVD’s. Chances are the chap who sold me the DVD gets them wholesale too. In fact he must, because he can afford to sell them for £8 a go.
My point is this. Where do you go for a bargain, or the cheapest place to buy a product? Ebay, of course. It’s a BUYERS market. It always will be! If my chap can sell DVD’s for that price, just think what he could sell them for OUTSIDE Ebay! If you saw a market stall selling NEW DVD’s for £8-£10 a go, you’d bite their hand off to get at them. Not just market stalls either – local newspaper Ad’s local free Ad’s (mine is LOOT, where you can place a FREE advertisement as a private seller – can you tell the difference?) The reason you haven’t made serious money from Ebay is that everyone EXPECTS a bargain. If they can’t get a brand new, top spec laptop for AT LEAST £500 less than in the shops, they aren’t interested. Ebay has become a law unto itself, to the point where people will cut of their noses to spite their faces. It’s all about getting a bargain.
If however, you use the TRADE directories that are listed in appendix 1 to buy at WHOLESALE prices you CAN make a killing on Ebay). Many wholesalers will ask for a minimum order – usually no more than £100 or £200 though, and you’ll be getting it so cheaply, you’ll be almost sure to sell. Your other option is to sell without using Ebay, in ways I mentioned above. The KEY thing here is that by using the Wholesale list you will be buying in bulk from a wholesale so you can compete with other traders on Ebay. The chap who sells DVD’s doesn’t make them himself in his shed, so he MUST be buying them wholesale. If you do the same you can compete. Looking at
the chap’s feedback he makes £500 a week! There’s nothing to stop you doing the same! Whatever you do, DON’T buy from Ebay to sell on – you’ll be buying from people who have bought from wholesalers AND put their own mark-up on. It’s like one of those dodgy pyramid selling schemes from the seventies, where everyone bought a product from the person above them in the chain. The poor sod on the bottom row was working his a*se off trying to sell a bottle of washing-up liquid for £17! WHY NOT GO DIRECT TO THE SOURCE! THEN, resell on Ebay! That’s where the real money is! That’s where the REAL business is.
