Why we need to encourage vocations

1) Pray for vocations, and in this time of

unrest in our Church, be sure to give

thanks for the holy men and women

who have chosen a religious life in

dedication to our Church;

2) Talk to your pastor about how your

parish can support vocations—start a

vocations committee, or if you already

have one, consider joining. Invite your

committee to tour Bruté Seminary or call

me to explore how your group can sup-

by Fr. Joe Moriarty Rector

Without vocations, we won’t have

priests. Without priests, we won’t have

the Eucharist. Without the Eucharist,

we won’t have the means of salvation

to nourish us onto eternal life.

When we speak of supporting voca-

tions, it’s not just the work of priests or sis-

ters. It’s the work of all the baptized. If the member-

ship, the baptized, doesn’t understand that it’s their

responsibility to encourage vocations, we won’t have

priests to minister the sacraments, particularly the

sacrament of the Eucharist. Without priests, we

won’t have the Eucharist. Without the Eucharist, we

won’t have salvation mediated to us in the person of

Jesus Christ. It’s really very simple. We are all re-

sponsible for encouraging vocations.

While there are many ways to encourage voca-

tions, in the context of Bishop Simon Bruté College

Seminary, I would suggest the following:

port our efforts. For example, parish groups

have offered to make dinner for our seminari-

ans, which is a wonderful way to get to know

and spend time with them.

1) Financially support the seminary through a

donation to our Annual Fund, Capital Fund or

Endowment Fund. Annual Fund contributions

help our operating costs, as well as funding

educational enhancements such as the annual

seminarian trip to the Right to Life March in

Washington, D.C., the annual retreat for col-

lege seminarians and formation nights that

take place on a weekly basis. Capital Fund gifts

help us maintain and enhance the beautiful

and historic facility in which we occupy. En-

dowment donations help us plan for the fu-

ture.

An investment in vocations is truly an investment

in every parish, as well as the universal Church. When

you encourage vocations, you help grow our Church

and ensure its future vitality.

Recently, we created a new promotional video for

the seminary, and in it we focused on the theme of

promoting vocations. At the conclusion of the video,

quite a few of our seminarians relay who most inspired

them to pursue their vocation. While most would as-

sume that seminarians are most inspired by their pas-

tor or another priest, It is quite interesting to note that

their answers are quite varied. The point is that they

were inspired by people all around them—parents,

fellow parishioners, siblings, teachers, etc. Anyone can

encourage a vocation. How can you encourage a young

man to consider a vocation today?

According to the 2018 CARA Report (Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate)

• Nearly 9 in 10 responding ordinands reported

being encouraged to consider the priesthood by

someone in their life (most frequently, the parish

priest, friend, or another parishioner). Responding

ordinands indicate that, on average, 4 individuals

encouraged their vocation.

• More than 7 in 10 responding ordinands participat-

ed in Eucharistic Adoration on a regular basis

before entering the seminary. The same proportion

of responding ordinands prayed the rosary, half

attended prayer group/Bible study, two in five

went to high school retreats, 1 in 3 responding

ordinands attended Lectio Divina , and a quarter

attended college retreats.

• In regard to participation in parish ministries

before entering the seminary, nearly 3/4 of

responding ordinands served as altar servers

before entering the seminary. Nearly 3 in 5 served

as lectors. Around half served as Extraordinary

Ministers of Holy Communion. 1 in 3 served as

catechists, in campus ministry or youth ministry,

or as confirmation sponsors/godfathers.

In Memoriam: 1942-2018

Our 2018-19 school year started on a sad note with the passing of Fr. Tom Widner, S.J., Bruté director of Spiritual Formation, dear friend and mentor. Fr. Tom passed away on August 13 at the age of 76 . Fr. Tom arrived at Brute in 2010 after a lengthy life of parish service and distinguished career of journalistic contributions. He taught at Latin High School and served in various capacities at Our Lady of Greenwood, St. Andrew the Apostle, St. Susanna, St. John the Evangelist, St. Barnabas and Holy Trinity parishes. Most notably, he served as a writer and editor for America Maga-zine (a worldwide Jesuit publication), editor-in-chief of The New World (Archdiocese of Chicago newspaper), editor-in-chief of The Criterion (Archdiocese of Indianapolis newspaper), and Secretary for Communications at the USA Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C. No doubt the men of Bruté greatly benefited from his worldly perspective and knowledge. We will forever be enriched by his presence among us.

Junior seminarian

A few months ago, I wrote an article on an amazing experience I had in Guatemala encoun-tering about two hundred children in an or-phanage. I spoke of their simplicity and childlike spirit, and through them, I learned so much about the Father’s love. Unfortunately, my joy-ful thoughts have been turned to great sadness as I continue to reflect on the recent scandals within the Church that affect so many of God’s children. I am deeply hurt and angry to know that priests, men that are supposed to be fa-thers, have done dark acts. I cannot begin to imagine the excruciating pain that these victims went through and continue to experience. I must say I deeply admire their courage, and my hope is that the truth continues to be revealed. I will continue to pray and fast for them often, and I hope that nothing that I say in these com-ing paragraphs will undermine the suffering they are going through. The number one priori-ty of the Church in relationship to this issue should be healing for the victims, and then, a focus on forming holy priests.

I desperately want to make right what has gone wrong, but what can a seminarian do? Is there any hope for the Catholic Church? I have been sitting with these questions for some time, and a few thoughts keep coming up in prayer. First, I continue to reflect on my own father’s struggles with addiction to pain killers, and how through the darkness of that time, my family had to become more transparent. My family is stronger for having gone through that difficulty, allowing all of us to see that the truth must be revealed. It is through the “domestic church” of my home that I have found hope that the Church can be purified.

Seminarian reflects on the affect of priest abuse scandal, hope for the Church’s future

Secondly, I find myself reflecting on the words that Christ directed to the twelve disciples in John 6, “Do you also want to leave?” This question continues to repeat in my head. Fr. Mike Schmitz, a priest from Minnesota, has argued that this is not a time to leave the Church, but a time to lead the Church. It is a time to repent and wake up to the call for greatness in our lives. We are in a great battle, and often, we encounter a Judas, but we must not forget the eleven others were willing to lay down their lives. We must hate the

evil that has been done and do all we can to heal and purify it. Amidst some of the dark-est times in human history, great saints have come forth to combat the darkness with the light of truth and love.

This love is a love that a shepherd is sup-posed to have when protecting his flock. This image is one of the reasons I am attracted to priesthood, and I am hurt when I see it used for evil. It has challenged me to examine my own sinfulness and what holds me back from living out my vocation with an authentic love for the sheep. Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary has given me a foun-dation on which to grow and examine my life. A young man cannot pass through these halls without looking at his call to be a man after the heart of Christ. That is the kind of priest I would desire to be. We need priests who spend time with Christ daily, who hun-ger for the Eucharist, and who desire the sweet sound of Mary’s “yes.” Priests must strive to be all they can be because medioc-rity has no place in the priesthood and in the Church.

I write this with a heavy heart, but also with hope because we are Resurrection peo-ple. I pray that we all continue to reveal the truth and hold strong to words like that of Saint John Paul the Great, “Against all the forces of death, in spite all the false teach-ers, Jesus Christ continues to offer humanity the only true and realistic hope. Hope! He is the world’s true shepherd. He never ceases to repeat with the same vigor and love, ‘I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly!’”

Congratulations! Brute Class of 2018

Bruté graduating class of 2018, pictured from left: Adam Berning, Caleb Kruse, Joe Paul Hayden, Dominic Garrett, Eric Gehlhausen, Alex McCullough, Fermin Luna, Mark Hellinger, Jonathan Alvarez, Patrick Blenham, Daniel Ocha, Matthew Perronie, Connor Zink

Post graduation plans: Work for a year in order to establish a financial cushion and go back to school after a year.

Favorite Bruté memory: Snow football followed by a giant snowball fight in March Most important thing I learned while at Brute: Realizing how broken and imperfect I was when entering semi-nary.

Jonathan Alvarez

Post graduation plans: I will be taking a year long leave of absence, living and working at Holy Angels Parish in Sidney, Ohio as Music Director. I will be continuing

discernment with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary and St Louis. Favorite Bruté memory: Sitting around campfires and talking to other seminarians that I may not know as well. Campfires have a way of bringing people together and really allowing one to be one's self. They truly help form community. Most important thing I learned while at Brute: Community life has greatly influenced me as a person in Christ, without it seminary would not be nearly as effective in forming men in Christ.

Adam Berning

Post graduation plans: Major Seminary at Mt. St. Mary's of the West, Cincinnati, Ohio

Favorite Bruté memory: Spending time getting to know my brothers here at seminary, especially on seminary trips. Most important thing I learned while at Brute: Coming to not only know myself more, but to know myself through God and His guidance .

Patrick Blenman

Post graduation plans: Industrial construction work Favorite Bruté memory: Playing full-field soccer on a wet muddy field with all

my brother seminarians. Most important thing I learned while at Brute: Patience and trust in God's providential plan.

Dominic Garrett

Page 5: Why we need to encourage vocations

5

Post graduation plans: I will be leaving seminary and will be looking into youth ministry.

Favorite Bruté memory: One of my favorite memories from Bruté is the time that we had a snowball fight, built a snowman, and then made hot chocolate and sat around the fireplace. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: Always be grateful for everything you have and never be afraid to go to Our Blessed Mother.

Eric Gehlhausen

Post graduation plans: I will be attending St. Meinrad Seminary Favorite Bruté memory: Taking 4th place at the Mundelein Basketball

Tournament Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: Being here at Bruté has taught me even more about being grateful. To possess gratitude is such an essential aspect to living a good and holy life.

Joe Paul Hayden

Post graduation plans: I will be attending the Pontifical North American College in Rome for Major Seminary.

Favorite Bruté memory: I enjoyed all the time spent in the kitchen with food and conversation. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: The Father's will is being done, and it's calling us all to the peaks.

Mark Hellinger

Post graduation plans: Working in Fort Wayne Favorite Bruté memory: Every fall we have been blessed to go to Columbus,

Ohio to participate in an inter-seminary soccer tournament. It was all a great time of fraternity with each oth-er, whether the teamwork on the field, getting injured together, or a joke told on the field that brings both teams on their knees laughing that play has to stop. All the time we have had to live as brothers has been in-credible, especially the soccer tournament. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: Christ is everything; keep your eyes fixed on Him.

Caleb Kruse

Post graduation plans: Attend Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio Favorite Bruté memory: The many times we played soccer senior year and the

tournament that year. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: I have come to recognize the importance of relationships in our life and how our love for God is reflected through our love for others.

Fermin Luna

Post graduation plans: I am planning on attending Kenrick-Glennon Seminary to study theology.

Favorite Bruté memory: I don’t know if I can say one specific event. Rather, I would simply say that I have enjoyed most getting to share new experiences with my friends. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: I have learned most that it is important to trust in God above all else.

Alex McCullough

Post graduation plans: Continuing onto theology Favorite Bruté memory: Playing sports and hanging with the guys

Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: God is constantly speaking to us either through others or in the silence of our hearts, we must be open to hear His call

Daniel Ochoa

Post graduation plans: I plan to continue seminary formation at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology

Favorite Bruté memory: My favorite memory from my time at Bruté would have to be our annual Christmas party. We gather for dinner and then get in a circle and go around and open presents that guys have gotten for us. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: I’ve learned a lot in my time at Bruté and have grown in many ways, but I think what I have learned the most is the need to be present to people and to go outside of myself to be attentive to the needs of those around me.

Matthew Perronie

Post graduation plans: Discern religious orders. Favorite Bruté memory: Talking with guys at the smoker's table, especially that

one time the Blatchford family was visiting. Most important thing I learned while at Bruté: Learning to surrender your will to the will of God.

Connor Zink

Maintaining an historic building constructed in 1928 can not only be costly, it requires care to make sure any renovations keep the integri-ty of the original structure and design intact.

A generous gift from an anonymous donor has enabled two renovation projects to take place at the seminary this fall, increasing the seminary’s ability to serve current and future seminarians, while maintaining the historic feel of the building.

“The kitchen was still as it was original built back in 1928,” said Rector Fr. Joe Moriarty. “With a recent donation, we were able to re-place all the cabinets, countertops and the main island in the kitchen. We upgraded to stainless steel cabinetry and added better lighting, all while keeping the character of the original subway tile and window arches in place. The guys love the new space.”

Just outside the kitchen, a new space was carved out to display the statue of Bishop Simon Bruté, our namesake. In the hallway, to the right of the kitchen, a new trophy display case was installed.

Above the kitchen in the area that was previously the infirmary for the sisters when the building was still a Carmelite Monastery, the same donation is also funding the renovation of three guest suites. This renovation is expected to be completed in November, and the suites will be available for bishops and vocation directors to occupy when they visit their seminarians.

“We are very grateful for the contribution which made these additions and upgrades possible,” Moriarty said. “In God’s providence, He joins us with partners who help us fulfill our mission.”

Renovations improve function, ability to serve future seminarians

Celebrate Bruté Nearly 200 donors and friends gathered to celebrate Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary. Guests mingled with current seminarians, viewed a new vid-eo featuring the theme of “encouraging vocations,” and heard from speakers Archbishop Charles Thompson and Annual Fund Chairperson Fr. Dan Bedel.

The Bishop Simon Bruté Society was established on the 10th anniversary of the Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary to honor those who generously support the seminary with financial contributions. Servant of God Simon Bruté was the first Bishop of the Diocese of Vincennes, Indiana, which later became the Archdiocese of Indianap-olis. Appointed bishop in 1834, Simon Bruté worked tirelessly to build the Catholic Church throughout Indiana and Illinois. When appointed bishop, only two priests served the diocese and both were “on loan” from other diocese. By the time of his death, only five years later, 25 priests served here and several men were studying in the seminary. Simon Bruté was frequently consulted by bishops and clergy throughout the country who sought his wisdom and knowledge. His influence on the early Church in the Unit-ed States was formidable, and it is fitting he be the patron of our seminary. The cause

for the canonization of Simon Bruté was opened in September of 2005.
