Why the IP Rating Matters in Rugged Android Smartphones

Rugged phones have gained great popularity for good reasons. Before you plan to buy one, it isworth to know about the IP Codes. Not many people know but IP codes do make a greatdifference between waterproof rugged smartphones that can survive even when dipped in thewater, and those that can survive just few drops.

International Protection Rating

It is also called as Ingress Protection Rating. Though they are codes, it largely determines theextent to which a device can be protected from varied harsh weather conditions and hazards. It ismainly made up of two letters i.e. IP. It is further followed by three numbers. Each of the numberindicates its resistance:

The First Number: Protection against Solid Objects

It is wise to know that the first number normally ranges from 0-6. It indicates the ability towithstand hit against solid objects:

0 – no special protection1 – Objects that are larger than 50 millimeters mainly large surfaces2 – Objects that larger than 12.5 millimeters like fingers3 – Objects that larger than 2.5 millimeters mostly tools and thick wires4 – Objects that larger than 1 millimeter mostly screws or wires5 – Dustproof; though dust enters it will not interfere with equipment in any way6 – Dust tight; there is no way for dust to enter

The Second Number: Protection against Liquid Intrusion

The second number mainly determines the longevity of the rugged Android smartphones whenexposed to water. Apart from this, it also tells how much of water it is able to resist. The secondnumber mainly ranges from 0-8:

0 – No special protection1 – Vertical drops mainly dripping water2 – Vertical position, direct spray of water at a 15-degree angle3 – Vertical position, Direct spray of water a 60-degree angle4 – Direct spray of water from all the directions5 – Low-pressure stream of water from all the directions6 – Temporary water flooding7 – Immersion from 15 centimeters to 1 meter8 – Immersion under pressure and for long period

The Third Number: Protection against Impact

When it comes to knowing the durability of the shockproof and tough phones, consider the thirdnumber in IP. It ranges from 0 to 6:

0 – No protection1 – Up to 0.225 joules or 150 grams dropped from 15 centimeters2 – Up to 0.375 joules or 250 grams from 15 centimeters3 – up to 0.5 joules or 250 grams from 20 centimeters4 –up to 2 joules or 500 grams from 40 centimeters5 – up to 6 joules or 1.5 kilograms from 40 centimeters6 – up to 20 joules or 5 kilograms from 40 centimeters

Some of the damage resistant phones eliminate the third number and make use of the IK code. Itis same as IP code, however, ranges from 0-10:

IK00 – No protectionIK01 – Up to 0.14 joulesIK02 – Up to 0.20 joulesIK03 – Up to 0.35 joulesIK04 – Up to 0.50 joulesIK05 – Up to 0.70 joulesIK06 – Up to 1 jouleIK07 – Up to 2 joulesIK08 – Up to 5 joulesIK09 – Up to 10 joulesIK10 – Up to 20 joules

You should know that not every tough phone is waterproof, and nor is every waterproof phoneshockproof.
