It is also called as Ingress Protection Rating. Though they are codes, it largely determines theextent to which a device can be protected from varied harsh weather conditions and hazards. It ismainly made up of two letters i.e. IP. It is further followed by three numbers. Each of the numberindicates its resistance:

The First Number: Protection against Solid Objects

It is wise to know that the first number normally ranges from 0-6. It indicates the ability towithstand hit against solid objects:

0 – no special protection1 – Objects that are larger than 50 millimeters mainly large surfaces2 – Objects that larger than 12.5 millimeters like fingers3 – Objects that larger than 2.5 millimeters mostly tools and thick wires4 – Objects that larger than 1 millimeter mostly screws or wires5 – Dustproof; though dust enters it will not interfere with equipment in any way6 – Dust tight; there is no way for dust to enter

The Second Number: Protection against Liquid Intrusion
