1 Why should I continue to be an ISOO member? Dr. Richard Logan, ISOO President In January 2014, you will be asked to pay $35 USD to continue your membership in the International Society of Oral Oncology. In years past, becoming an ISOO member was simply a matter of checking a box on your MASCC application/renewal (with no fees attached). As an ISOO Board, we saw it as important that ISOO create a small revenue stream to allow us to grow our Society and to continue the great work that ISOO does. What are the benefits of ISOO membership? ISOO membership connects you to an international group of professionals who share your interest in oral oncology. The annual MASCC/ISOO conferences have provided a basis for cooperation between members, cancer centers, countries and continents. Many collaborative projects have been launched through this meeting; most recently the Oral Care Study Group systematic reviews of oral side-effects of cancer therapy which have gone on to publication in the Journal of Supportive Care. ISOO members will have free access to the ISOO CE session held during the MASCC/ISOO Annual Symposium. ISOO members will continue to receive ISOO newsletters which (a) highlight upcoming meetings of interest (b) describe the ongoing work of MASCC and ISOO-led study groups and (c) connect ISOO members to each other in a fun and informal way, creating the ISOO family that we all enjoy. As your President, I hope that you will choose to continue your membership in ISOO. I look forward to seeing you all in Miami in June 2014! Why should I continue to be an ISOO member?Dr. Richard Logan, ISOO President

In January 2014, you will be asked to pay $35 USD to continue your membership in the International Society of Oral Oncology. In years past, becoming an ISOO member was simply a matter of checking a box on your MASCC application/renewal (with no fees attached). As an ISOO Board, we saw it as important that ISOO create a small revenue stream to allow us to grow our Society and to continue the great work that ISOO does.

What are the benefits of ISOO membership?• ISOO membership connects you to an international group of professionals who

share your interest in oral oncology. The annual MASCC/ISOO conferences have provided a basis for cooperation between members, cancer centers, countries and continents.

• Many collaborative projects have been launched through this meeting; most recently the Oral Care Study Group systematic reviews of oral side-effects of cancer therapy which have gone on to publication in the Journal of Supportive Care.

• ISOO members will have free access to the ISOO CE session held during the MASCC/ISOO Annual Symposium.

• ISOO members will continue to receive ISOO newsletters which (a) highlight upcoming meetings of interest (b) describe the ongoing work of MASCC and ISOO-led study groups and (c) connect ISOO members to each other in a fun and informal way, creating the ISOO family that we all enjoy.

As your President, I hope that you will choose to continue your membership in ISOO. I look forward to seeing you all in Miami in June 2014! Wishing you and your family a happy and prosperous New Year.

Sincerely, Dr. Richard Logan, ISOO President

By Dr. Cesar Migliorati (Chair,

MASCC Bone Study Group)

The new name has been voted by the members of the group by email and

during the group meeting in Berlin last June. During the past year, the group members discussed the need to change the name of the group to be current

with the changes observed recently in the literature. Several suggestions for the new name were made, including:

Keeping the current name “Bone Complications Study Group”, “Bone Health Study Group”, “Bone Integrity

Study Group”, “Bone Impairment Study Group”, “Bone Health and Integrity Study Group”, and “Bone Study Group”. The name “Bone Study

Group” was selected as the most representative of the group activities.

The Bone Study Group will have two subgroups: “Bone

Integrity” will address issues related to cancer patients at risk for bone loss who receive aromatase inhibitors and androgen deprivation therapy-ADT and issues related with maintaining

bone health; “Bone Complications” will address all other skeletal complications in cancer.

The Medscape educational project was very successful. The project was funded by an educational grant from Amgen and

included two parts. Part I was a video conference with 4 bone experts discussing the subject using case examples. The participants included Drs. Alan Lipton (moderator), James

Berenson (multiple myeloma), Matthew Smith (prostate cancer), and Catherine Von Poznak (breast cancer). Part 2 included an Expert Column Series for medical and nurse oncologists. The

column for medical oncologists was written by Dr. Jean-Jacques Body and reviewed by Dr. Barbara Murphy and the column for nurses was written by Rita Wickham and reviewed by Monika Fliedner. In addition there was an expert interview focusing on

the maintenance of bone health in patients with multiple myeloma that was done by Dr. Paul G. Richardson.

Dr. Migliorati talked about the success of this program and, in a recent meeting with Medscape Oncology officials, it was reported that in the past 12 months since the program became available online, there have been over 19,000 health care professionals who

have accessed the site and a large number of them who have completed the course to obtain CME credits. This program has become a model for other study groups to follow.

Dr Winston Tan, a medical oncologist from the Mayo Clinic (Chair, Genitourinary Medical Oncology, Florida) was appointed as the Bone Study Group Co-Chair. This is an important addition

to the group that needed to have a medical oncologist as a member of the group’s leadership. The plan is for Dr. Tan to take over the chairman position when the current chair (Dr. Cesar Migliorati) completes his term.

Members of the BSG will collaborate with the Oral Care Study Group in the current project of systematic reviews of the oral complications of cancer therapy. The BSG is planning a survey

that will address the knowledge base of health care professional members of MASCC/ISOO on both osteoradionecrosis and osteonecrosis of the jaw secondary to medications.
