The Israelites came into the W
ilderness of Sinai. They camped in front of
the mountain. G
od wanted to make a covenant, or agreem
ent, with the people of Israel. M
oses went up the mountain. G
od called to him,
saying, “Tell the Israelites: ‘If you listen carefully to M
e and you keep My covenant, you will be M
y people.’ ” M
oses told them what G
od had said. All the people responded together, “W
e will do all that the Lord has spoken.”
Then God gave M
oses the Ten C
omm
andments. The first four
comm
andments told the Israelites
what it looks like to have a right relationship with G
od: “Do not
have other gods besides Me. D
o not m
ake an idol for yourself. D
o not misuse the nam
e of the Lord your G
od. Remem
ber the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
The last six comm
andments
told the Israelites what it looks like to have a right relationship with each other: “You m
ust honor your father and your m
other. You must not
murder. You m
ust keep your marriage
promises. You m
ust not steal. You must
not lie. You must not want what belongs to
someone else.”W
hen God was finished speaking to M
oses on M
ount Sinai, He gave M
oses two stone tablets that He
had written on with His own finger.
Christ Connection: God is holy and separate from
sin. His law shows us what H
e requires—
perfect righteousness. Our sin separates us from
God, but Jesus cam
e to bring us back to G
od. Jesus is perfectly righteous. When we trust in Jesus, H
e takes away our sin and welcom
es us into God’s fam
ily.
