…and how you can too!

What is World Horse Welfare?

• World Horse Welfare is the UK’s biggest rescue and rehoming charity

• As well as helping horses in Britain they also help working horses all over the world

• It is nearly 90 years old and helps horses, ponies, donkeys and mules here and all over the world

World Horse Welfare in the UK • World Horse Welfare has four rescue and

rehoming centres caring for over 200 horses: – Belwade Farm in Aberdeenshire– Penny Farm in Lancashire – Hall Farm in Norfolk – Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerset

• Visitors are welcome and can meet some of the wonderfully friendly horses

• All the centres regularly hold events such as shows and family fun days!

• Each centre has its own Facebook page

World Horse Welfare in the UK

• The charity has 16 expert Field Officers covering England, Wales and Scotland

• These Field Officers are able to investigate abuse, neglect or suffering reported via the free Welfare Line

• The Field Officers may offer the owner advice, or in some cases work with the authorities to remove a horse who isn’t being properly cared for

Here for vulnerable horsesExpert knowledge,

teamwork and compassion enables

World Horse Welfare to change the fortunes

of ponies like Tiggy.Poor Tiggy was found

abandoned and fending for herself when

she was pregnant. Thanks to World Horse Welfare,

today Tiggy is a happy, healthy and confident pony

who is so eager to please (and loves to jump!)

Rehoming happy horses • As soon as horses like Tiggy are well

and their rehabilitation is complete they are ready to find happy new homes

• Whilst all the horses are owned by World Horse Welfare forever many horses stay with their rehomers for life!

• Rehoming a once abused or neglected horse gives him or her a bright future and makes space in the centres for horses who desperately need help

Ensuring horses are protected by law• World Horse Welfare campaigns to make sure

that laws to protect the welfare of horses are: – appropriate for horses– up to date – being enforced

• Because Britain is part of the European Union the charity speaks to the UK parliament in London as well as the European parliament in Brussels

• The charity has helped to bring about over 50 laws that directly help horse welfare

World Horse Welfare Overseas• In many countries around the world the

poorest people still have working horses, ponies, donkeys and mules to help them earn money to feed their families

• They pull carts, work on farms and are used instead of cars for transport

• They often help children get to school, fetch and carry drinking water and transport ill or injured people to hospital

World Horse Welfare Overseas

• Sadly though many of the owners don’t have access to:– The right kind of food for their horse – Farriers to keep their hooves in good

condition– Vets or medical experts – Tack or harnesses that fit properly– Every-day horse care essentials, such as

hoof-picks

• This often means that the horses are in pain when they work, through no fault of their owner

Page 10: Why I support World Horse Welfare …and how you can too!

World Horse Welfare Overseas

• World Horse Welfare has 12 projects around the world

• They work with people living in the countries to provide: – Education – Skills – Hands-on care

• This gives horses and their owners a brighter future

Young people are so important• The charity works with

children and young people of all ages all over the world to teach them about good horse care

• The children can help to change the culture around horse care and for years to come can pass on important knowledge about how to keep horses healthy and well
