Why did Jesus have to die? Message Notes • Paul Kiss • Matthew 20:28 “The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many.” 1. God is a personal God E Genesis 3:8-9 2. “Covering” and “Visiting” E Genesis 3:7; 3:21 ÷ God’s visits before and after their fall. 3. Sacrifice ÷ The word for “covering” is the same as the word for “atonement.” ÷ Old Testament sacrifices for sin - Leviticus 1; 16; Isaiah 53 (Sin offering, Day of Atonement, Suffering Servant). 4. Jesus and At-one-ment ÷ John 1:29 - Jesus the “lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” ÷ Jesus spoke often of his work of atoning or covering sin - Mark 8:31; 9:31; Matthew 20:28; John 3:14-17 with Numbers 21:4-9; John 6:53-56 ÷ The cross covers all sin for all time, Hebrews 9:23-28 and 10:11-14. ÷ But his work for us is a gift to be accepted or it cannot help us, Ephesians 2:1-10. FOR FURTHER REFLECTION 1. Why is it not enough to simply just “forgive” sin when we do wrong? (Think about the severity of sin. Is it enough to just “forgive” murder or does there need to be consequence, justice?) 2. In relation to sin and wrong doing, what is the connection between love, mercy and justice? 3. Read Exodus 29:1-4 and Leviticus 1:1-9. How do these help us understand Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:13-17, as it relates to his atoning work for humanity? 4. Leviticus 1:1-9 also declares that a person must present their offering at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. The priest needed to inspect it to ensure it was a worthy sacrifice. How does this help us understand the significance of the High Priest’s declaration in Matthew 26:63-66? 5. After this study, how do you feel about what Jesus has done for you? If you are grateful for his sacrifice for your sin, what can you do to express that gratitude? 6. Who is there in your life that needs you to explain this whole concept to them? When will you talk with them about this? Listen to past messages on iTunes or online at: www.newlifecollingwood.com/messages 04.12.2015 | 0001
