Are No-Kill Shelters Good or Bad?By Paige Zamsky

Between nine and 11 million dogs are euthanized every year at shelters, yet some ‘No-Kill shelters keep taking in unwanted pets, and the care is inhumane.

Are No-Kill shelters Good or Bad?

Less than 2% of cats are returned to their owners, and 15% to 20% of dogs are returned to their owners, but the ones that are not will probably be put to sleep. On the other hand, some ‘No -Kill’ shelters keep taking in unwanted pets, and the animals are not well cared for at all. A lot of No-Kill shelters save lots of lives, but others are very harmful.

Why are animals being put down?

Most dogs are euthanized in pounds because they are aggressive. They are also commonly dropped off at the shelter for that reason, so aggressive dogs will probably never leave the shelter that they discarded to. Sometimes it is important that dogs are euthanized if they are too aggressive, but mostly dogs bite if they are provoked. Pets are usually put to sleep because of health problems, also. In shelters, dogs get kennel cough often, and lots of times the pound can’t afford the $100 treatment. Mostly they are put to sleep in shelters to make space for other dogs that have a better chance of getting adopted then they do.

There are so many unwanted pets. The only way to confirm that there aren’t any more homeless pets is to know that people are aware of how many animals there are that need homes in shelters. They also have to be more serious about getting a pet, and know how much work comes with it.

Why do people give up their pets? The reason why any pet ends up in a

shelter is because of the owners. Sometimes owners desert their pet at a shelter because they might be moving and can’t take their pet with them. Also, the dog or cat might have gotten bigger than they thought it would, or they might not have enough time for them. Also, the dog or cat might of gotten bigger than they thought it would, or they might not have enough time for them. Another example is that they dog is tearing up the yard. There are lots of solutions for some of those easy to fix problems! Pet owners need to be more committed, and whenever they aren’t it affects the animals!

How do No-Kill shelters affect pets?A lot of No-Kill shelters are life-savers for dogs and cats, but others ‘warehouse’ animals for years at a time. They keep taking in animals even though they don’t have enough space or proper care for them. The other type of No-Kill shelter treats animals humanely until they can find a home. Also, one report of a ‘No-Kill’ shelter said that they were kept in completely covered crates all day, and the care is inhumane. Aggressive dogs are kept in an isolated room called ‘The Box’! All animals need improved care, and no pet should ever be in a shelter, No-Kill or not! People need to realize how many pets there are that need homes, and should treat animals with as much respect as they give humans! A street dog with her puppy ↑

How do Pounds affect dogs?Lots of pounds put pets to sleep humanely, but other ones, like some No-Kill shelters, don’t care about the animals whatsoever. Even though most dogs and cats are euthanized to allow space for others, the animals only have three days in some places to get adopted. It is very stressful in a shelter, and even the best pet will act strangely. There is a 90% chance that your pet will be euthanized at a pound. Also, dogs get kennel cough often at pounds, and the treatment is really expensive, so a lot of shelters can’t afford that, or they don’t think it is worth it. Every single animal is worth it, and they shouldn’t have to be put in terrible conditions before they are euthanized.
