LARRY CAIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPAutumn MillerAutumn Miller is preparing herself to not only be an outstanding physical educator but also a leader in our profession. Autumn has been a WHPE member since 2015 and has balanced being an outstanding student in the classroom while being

an All-American Track and Field athlete. Autumn’s leadership abilities have been demonstrated as she was elected to the Public Relations position of the UWL Physical Education Majors Club during the 2016-2017 school year and was elected as the Vice President for the 2017-2018 school year. ADVOCACYSandy Hagenbach Sandy has been a dedicated WHPE member for 20 years, having earned distinction as a District coordinator, being recognized as a JRFH winner, TOY; Recognition (Honor) Award winner. She works tirelessly on behalf of her students and the profession, freely offering her services through member collaboration and workshops. Sandy has embraced JRFH and FUTP60 and is always willing to help

fellow WHPE colleagues. Through her book relative to Hellison’s responsible personal behavior, she has helped many in Wisconsin and across the nation to embrace and implement these concepts. For many years, Sandy has been ‘behind the camera’ during Convention and taking Awards’ photos helping to capture and record memories. She retired form this role during last year’s Convention, and WHPE recognizes Sandy with this Advocacy award for her many years of service in this role.

Tim MuellerTim is K-8 at Erin School and was recently recognized a WHPE/ Midwest MS TOY. He was also recognized nationally for winning a JRFH Grant and has attained national visibility with FUTP60. Mr. Mueller has been a member of our WASB presentation Team for several years and last year he ‘stepped up’ his level of participation by coordinating with his administration to bring his student

demonstrators to the WASB event on very short notice when another WHPE member was unable to do so. Because of his efforts, WHPE was able to maintain its high quality role at the WASB event. We recognize Tim for his efforts and thank him for his participation in WHPE’s major Advocacy event with this award.

Mary PaluchniakMary, like her colleague Ken who was recognized earlier, is in the role of Hospital Administration as St. Nick’s HSHS Community Outreach in Sheboygan. She is an RN who works to improve community health and physical activity. In that role, she is a part of the Sheboygan County Coalition for Activity & Nutrition (SCAN), and because Kris Fritz is also a part of that group, they have interacted in the past. Mary facilitated funding to help Kris provide helmets for Pre K children, and helped with a Boys & Girls Club project that emphasized MyPlate and PA where each participant was given a free T shirt and running shoes. Most recently, Mary provided funding for Kris to develop her 50 M ‘Stronger Together’ PE Buddy program conducted between High School / Pre K students. Because of Mary’s supportive roles, the Sheboygan Community has been served with positive impact relative to activity & nutrition. WHPE recognizes Mary’s role and that of St. Nick’s in these endeavors.

PROMISING PROFESSIONALAlexis (Campbell) MashakAlexis has been a WHPE member since she was a student and currently teaches PE/APE K -12 for Sparta Schools. Because she had a part time position, she also directed considerable time toward working with the local Boys and Girls club where she conducted a homework help program and ran summer camps. Her role this school year will be increased to full time so even more students and families will be impacted by her enthusiasm and knowledge. She has helped colleagues implement standards and advocated with the Board to help teachers to attend national SHAPE America events. In addition, she works with JRFH, coaching; the wellness committee for her district. For one who is just entering the profession, her impact is already recognizable and WHPE applauds her work.

Will WestphalWill teaches in Brillion elementary in addition to coaching basketball and doing JRFH. He is a part of the WHPE Board and has already helped SHAPE America with podcasts and written for ‘Great Activities’ Newsletter. Mr. Westphal has certification as a Strength & Conditioning Specialist and has had research published in ‘International Journal of Exercise Science’. According to his award nominator, Jackie Clark, “his comfort level for dance is not high, but he recognizes the need to include it in the PE curriculum for his students and is willing to just get out there and try!” With such qualifications, blended with knowledge and

enthusiasm, the profession is surely the better for having Will involved. WHPE appreciates what he has already done as a young professional.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER of the YEARKatie Mulloy / ElementaryKatie teaches in New Berlin where she has been for 11 years. Katie is a strong professional leader within the district where she shares collegially as well as at Best Practices and for the WHPE convention. Her curriculum offers standards and assessments, utilizes innovative methods supported by ‘best practices’ and includes just plain fun for all with whom she comes into contact. Likewise, she exposes students to JRFH, cup stacking, and integrated wellness concepts while also giving students extended physical activity via walk & roll to school and a track & field program. High energy and enthusiasm for the HPE profession paired with a personal lifestyle of health/ fitness make her an excellent TOY choice. WHPE is hopeful Katie will stay involved with us for many years.

Teaching in MPS can be challenging at times, but Keith has used PBIS, Hellison and other noted HPE professional strategies to engage his students in learning while being physically active. Mr. Barton is a conference attendee and continually works to network with the profession to gain cutting edge knowledge and methods to help students succeed. He works out physically and is a role model for sportsmanship (MPS sportsmanship award) for his students. Although he has over 20 years of experience, he is open to new ideas and shows a willingness to make adaptations. He is an excellent example of a TOY.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE - True VangTrue has served as the WHPE Northwest District Coordinator for the past four years. In his time of serving on the WHPE Board of Directors, he has played an integral role in implementing digital technology where it has been relevant for WHPE. This year marks the third year that WHPE has used a convention app to help participants navigate their way through our fall conventions. True researched and analyzed various convention apps and took the initiative to help get our association rolling on using the app. True has also served as the Tech Committee Chair when we first began working on our WHPE Strategic Plan and has worked well with the Tech

Committee to add a WHPE Facebook Page, post messages on social media, and to begin offering WHPE webinars. True’s time and efforts to help move WHPE forward with innovative digital tech ideas has been truly appreciated.

Irene CucinaIrene, SHAPE America Past President and Plymouth State University HHP Associate Professor, has served at the highest levels of our profession in both health and physical education, and has become one of our strongest advocates through her innovative and charismatic leadership. Irene’s tremendous passion for education, teacher preparation and best practice in health and physical education have served as a beacon of inspiration to the current WHPE President throughout her years of service. Irene’s inspirational messages touch the hearts of all who have been fortunate to hear her speak at SHAPE America and state

conventions, at District TOY celebrations, and other health and physical education committee work. Irene’s positive influence, leadership qualities and mentorship skills have emulated WHPE’s theme of Building Strong Connections- Educate . Engage . Advocate.

Karen NoelKaren, former Thorson Elementary School Principal, has made a tremendous impact in education as an administrator who fostered the emergence of leadership skills in her staff, and created an environment that allowed educators to take risks while implementing innovative teaching strategies. Karen’s ability to help her teachers “make a difference” in the lives of their students made for a very collaborative and dynamic teaching and learning environment. Every educator would benefit from an administrator like Karen who appreciates the mission and goals of our health and physical education programs and supported

events such as Family Wellness Night, family fun runs and JRFH/HFH. Educator evaluations with Karen included relevant, meaningful, and innovative discussions and reflections, showing Karen’s recognition and support of what a quality health and physical education program should look like.
