WINE IMPORTERS LTDDelivering Quality for over 40 Years
Wine Importers were established in 1975 to meet a growing demand for interesting wines with a Global difference; our Company was ahead of its time then and still is now.
40 years ago, the wine market was just awakening and grew steadily for 20 years as wine interest increased across every spectrum of society.
Today we strive to maintain the heritage and personal levels of service that were the norm in our founder’s time. We do not treat customers as just ‘account numbers’.
Continuity of supply is essential to your business. Our portfolio has evolved over 40 years as we seek out wines that are current and will enhance your business in an environment that is forever changing and developing. With our bonded storage facility in Livingston, enabling good stock holding levels and supply chain efficiencies, we are ideally placed for low carbon emissions and controlled deliveries to you via our own drivers and vans.
Not withstanding, we continue to offer many wines that remain constant due to their intrinsic quality and value.
Nowadays our range is one of the most extensive and innovative in Scotland and because of our reputation many of the world’s top wine producers value our reliability and consistency.
Today we are all operating in a digitally influenced, crowded and mature market with wide and varied customer choice. We strive to work in partnership with you to reach your goals and ambitions. Success is the bedrock of our values and culture.
After over 40 years, we remainScotland’s Most Reliable Wine Wholesaler

WINE BY THE GLASS RECOMMENDATIONS
DE-ALCOHOLISED WINES

CHAMPAGNE BARON ALBERTBaron Albert is a third generation family wine producer based in the heart of the Marne Valley. They own 50 hectares of their own vines and are thus able to ensure quality fruit for their wines. Now run by three sisters who each look after viticulture, oenology and commerce. Both wines are rich in the red grape of Pinot Meunier, making them both fruity and approachable. Well priced but well worth drinking in their own right.
CHAMPAGNE JOSEPH PERRIER ET FILSWine Importers enjoy a close relationship with this family owned Grande Marque. Based in the town of Chalons-en-Champagne, Joseph Perrier produce an exceptionally elegant style of wine. The house owns a large share of their own vineyards which is unusual in Champagne. This allows both control over quality and consistency. The impressive chalk cellars in the hill behind the winery house the wines for a minimum of three years and in many cases much longer.
Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale is named in honour of its Royal connections; it was the favourite Champagne of both Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. The entire range is extremely strong; the rosé and Blanc de Blancs have newly released vintage expressions, bottled in an unusual vessel found in the cellars from the 18th century.
The prestige cuvee Joséphine is exemplary, from a small number of grand crus showing the best of the vintage. The bottle itself is a wonder to behold, hinting at the elegance and character of the wine within.
This year sees the launch of a new bottle and image reflecting the premium nature of the wines.

TORRES NATUREODemand for low alcohol wines has never been higher, and Torres have been at the forefront of developing the technology. These wines are the results of their labours. They first make a wine from perfectly ripe grapes, and then remove the alcohol through the spinning cone method. Still full of flavour but just 0.5% ABV. A good natural solution to drink driving laws.

CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINE
7
FRENCH SPARKLINGFrance still leads the way when it comes to great value entry-level fizz. Baron d’Arignac illustrates this succinctly while the Duc de Breux is astonishingly crisp, clean and savoury for the money. Charles de Fère offers bottle-fermented elegance from a property twenty miles from Champagne.
LOIRE SPARKLING - ACKERMANAt the start of the 19th century, a young Flemish man, Jean-Baptiste Ackerman, was well aware of the reputation of the wines from the Val de Loire. In 1810 this rich banker’s son left Antwerp and arrived in Champagne where he explored the hills and valleys of this chalky region and began to learn all the secrets of the famous drink concocted in the 17th Century by the Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon. Subsequently, he became the founder in Saumur of the “method traditionnelle”. For forty years he was the only producer of this Val de Loire wine with fine bubbles.
CHAMPAGNE BOLLINGERThis legendary house needs no introduction. It is recognised the world over for its rich style of Champagne and of course the connection with James Bond! In the cellars, tradition rules: use of seasoned oak for maturation provides complexity and the cellars stretch for kilometres allowing the wine time to mature and is only released when ready.
Grande Année remains one of the best value prestige champagnes you can buy, full of complexity and capable of long ageing.

CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINE
FRIZZENTIAlways on the cutting edge, Wine Importers are excited to list this pioneering product. The popularity of Prosecco continues unabated and here is a solution for the on trade: Fizz on draught. Produced by a carefully selected supplier and made from Prosecco grapes, this product can be served much more quickly than pouring from a bottle and eliminates costly wastage.
VILLA SANDI, VALDOBBIADENEThe Valdobbiadene region of Italy is well renowned for the production of Prosecco, and Villa Sandi devotes to the production its utmost care and attention. The result of such effort is elegant wines with typical flowery and fruity notes that make unique Prosecco. An updated range now include Frizzante level wines and a top level single vintage wine. The 20cl is an excellent option where it not possible to pour Prosecco by the glass. A novel sweet red sparkling wine has also been added to the range.
SPAINHijos de Antonia Barceló is one of Spain’s century old Bodegas, producing quality wines such as the Peñascal Clasicó since 1876. The Peñascal brand is the undisputed wine leader in Spain. Made from 100% Tempranillo grapes from their own 3000Ha estates near Medina del Campo, Valladolid; this wine is slightly sparkling and bottled in an easily recognisable and distinctively shaped bottle.
CAVA: RENÉ BARBIER, CODORNIU & JUVE Y CAMPSRené Barbier was the son of a Frenchman, but his name is inextricably linked to Penedès. Juve y Camps have a prestigious reputation having been served at several Spanish Royal Banquets. A careful selection of grapes and extended ageing on the lees give wines of rare concentration and finesse.
The Marques de Sierra Negra are delicious entry level Cavas that punch well above their weight.

CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINE
ROSÉ
ENGLANDThe world is now aware that the south of England has both the terroir and the knowhow to challenge the best of their Gallic neighbours. We are delighted to welcome to the list Chapel Down from Kent who have been producing for more than two decades. The market leader in English wine, they have won so many gold medals they have lost count.
NEW WORLD SPARKLING The coolest Antipodean vineyard sites are ideally suited to premium sparkling wine. Tasmania has staked a serious claim as the world’s finest fizz-producing region outside Champagne, with Jansz being one of the undisputed leaders of this emerging industry. Traditional methods and use of the Champenoise grapes give wines of elegance and structure.
Hunters Miru Miru from Marlborough is named from the Maori word for bubbles. A delicious traditional wine making method from one of the regions founding producers.
The Chilean Santa Digna Estelado Rosé by Torres Chile is a beautiful pale pink sparkling rosé with fine and persistent bubbles. Unusually this is made from the local Pais grape which many will have never tried before!

FRANCEFrance offers the greatest range of rosé styles, from the palest pink Anjou, through the mineral, almost salty elegance of Provence, to the richer offerings from the Languedoc.
ITALYJust as in France, Italian rosés (rosatos) come in a broad range of colour and weights; the red-skinned Pinot Grigio makes the lightest, more of a blush style, followed by the crisp, strawberryish Lagrein and Cipresseto (made from Sangiovese).
The Rosa di Masi is a first; a rosé made using dried grapes more common in the production of Amarone.

ROSÉ
SPAINAs in France, Grenache – here called Garnacha – comes up trumps for rosé (rosado), aided and abetted by Tempranillo. These are fruity rosés, but all dry on the finish.
NEW WORLDHere a number of styles are on show, however they all have one thing in common; plenty of fruit. The Zinfandel is of course off-dry, and while the Pinotage is not sweet, the fruit is very tropical. The Chilean rosés are full bodied with a good deep colour, while the Running Duck takes a middle ground.
ORGANIC WINESAnother growing sector of the wine industry is organic certification. This is a high bar to pass, zero artificial pesticides or sprays for a number of years are required before certification will be granted. In some regions it is easier to achieve than others, with especially drier areas proving more naturally resistant to rot and disease.
While these are our certified organic wines, many of our producers abide by these practices without seeking recognition. Indeed some of our producers such as Chapoutier follow the Biodynamic doctrine which also preaches a harmony of nature approach, promoting health in the vineyard.

ALSACE / LOIRE VALLEY

MICHEL LÉONProduced by Domaine Sainte-Marguerite, this range of Cuvée Michel Léon shows off the typical Alsatian varietal range to great effect.
RENÉ MURÉ René Muré and his children Véronique and Thomas represent the 11th and 12th generations of winegrowers. The Muré family have been winemakers in the region of Rouffach since 1648. In 1935, Alfred Muré, René’s grandfather, bought the Grand Cru Clos St Landelin vineyard. Herethen, is a family that intimately understand their terroir and produce wines of great character.
PAYS NANTAISWhere the Loire river flows into the sea, these wines are perhaps the best example of how effective food matching improves the wine. Made to go with seafood with which the Scottish coast abounds the wines are bone-dry, crisp and salty, balanced with the subtle fruit flavours of the grape Melon de Bourgogne.
The Domaine du Cleray wines come from a vineyard close by to the Chateau du Cleray owned by the Sauvion family which is planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Although this is very much Muscadet country, the cool climate produces beautiful crisp examples of these grapes.
LOIRE VALLEY
ANJOU, SAUMURLANGLOIS-CHÂTEAUMoving upstream sees some of the best value wines of the Loire. Whites from Chenin Blanc and reds from Cabernet Franc offer both intrigue and quality. Langlois-Château offers classic examples of the quality this region can produce.

UPPER LOIREThe most famous appellations are found here, those of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé and through the Estates of De Ladoucette, Domaine Des Berthiers and Christian Salmon, some of the best are represented. We have added to our range some of the most world famous and highly regarded producers as well as those of our consistent and long standing family houses like Fournier. Also not to be missed is Cheverny, a small appellation blending in a portion of Chardonnay to the Sauvignon Blanc to create a unique wine.
COTEAUX DE LAYONNo less than Robert Parker said of Chateau de Fesles; “This domaine deserves its own classification.” An Historic Chateau dating back to 1070, it produces the best of the Loire’s speciality sweet wine grape, Chenin blanc. It has been given the alternative name of Yquem du Val de Loire!
TOURAINEThe region produces superb smaller AOC wines such as Vouvray as well as being an AOC in its own right. The estate of The Marquis De Goulaine not only represents great value wines but also a butterfly farm, depicted on labels.

In terms of enjoyment, the wines have never been better and should be in position to appeal to a market that loves fresh wines, especially those of Sauvignon Blanc. Of course in Bordeaux the Sauvignon is blended with Sémillon and occasionally a small percentage of Muscadelle. There are two styles of wine, the first fresh and fermented in stainless steel, these wines offer a good alternative to Loire or Chile. The second employ oak ageing, and usually a higher percentage of Semillon, these are serious wines fit for ageing or matching with haute cuisine. Much like sherry, the fact they are out of fashion tends to mean that a buyer also gets extraordinary value for money.
WHITE BORDEAUX
DESSERT, SWEET, MEDIUMSAUTERNES & BARSACIn the cool misty mornings of Autumn here, grapes are beginning their magical transformation with the onset of noble rot. The work is not only done in the vineyard however, with the top Châteaux practicing numerous passes for picking, and fastidious triage, selection of the best grapes.
These will make the finest sweet wines in the world, ageing for over one hundred years in the best cases. Vintage is all-important here, with the grapes demanding the right conditions to develop Botrytis.
Wine Importers historic and continued commitment to the wines of Bordeaux means we offer a variety of well-known Châteaux, and wines with good bottle age.
RED BORDEAUXHere is a selection of our best value clarets made in a more approachable style and suitable for earlier drinking. The Cockburns of Leith Claret proudly displays the crest of Scotland’s oldest wine merchant in a fine vintage and always offers outstanding value.
MÉDOCThe Médoc is the tongue of land north of Bordeaux and to the west of the Gironde. Within the Médoc the classified vineyard area is divided in two: Médoc appellation in the north and the larger Haut-Médoc appellation in the south. Within this Haut-Médoc appellation area are the world famous commune appellations of St-Estéphe, Pauillac, St-Julien, Margaux and the two smaller appellations of Listrac and Moulis. The Crus Classés vineyards are all in St-Estéphe, Pauillac, St-Julien, Margaux and Haut-Médoc appellations. The 500 or so Crus Bourgeois Châteaux are all within the Médoc and Haut-Médoc appellations.

HAUT MÉDOC
MOULIS
LISTRAC
ST-ESTÈPHEWithin this appellation there is a wide range of qualities, from the breed and power of its leading cru, to some rather lean, austere wines with a distinct gout de terroir. Improved methods of vinification have rendered many wines less rustic than they once were.

PAUILLACIt is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon achieves its most characteristic results, producing marked blackcurrant style for which it is justly famous. The wines are the most powerful in terms of bouquet, body and flavour of all Médocs. The best Crus combine this with finesse that develops with ageing.
ST-JULIENThe soils have more clay than Margaux and there is quite a difference between vineyards near the Gironde and those further inland, where more fleshy wines are made. These wines are of great character and originality, with more body and vivid fruit than those of Margaux. They match the best Pauillacs for longevity.
MARGAUXThe outstanding characteristics of the appellation are finesse and breed, the result of deep, poor, gravelly ridges and a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Many Margaux wines have more tannin and are slower to evolve. Also included under this appellation are most of Arsac and all of Cantenac.

PESSAC-LÉOGNAN/GRAVESThe region is a continuation geographically of the Médoc surrounding the city of Bordeaux and to the south. The list of red wines from this region includes some of the greatest wines in the Gironde (Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut Brion Domaine de Chevalier Pape Clement). Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape and the wines possess a special charm and elegance quite distinct from their Médocian cousins.
Tel: 01506 468 900 e-mail: [email protected] Fax: 01506 414 486
ST-ÉMILIONSt-Émilion are often approachable somewhat earlier than most Left Bank reds due to their higher content of Merlot, which is often more than 50% of the blend. The wines have a richness and often a very appealing sweetness particularly in the best years.
HALF BOTTLES
MAGNUMS
POMEROL Pomerol with its smaller often family-worked vineyards produces wonderfully deep-coloured, ripe, rich velvety wines again ready for consumption after four to five years due to the high proportion of mixed gravel sand and clay in the vineyards. They also include a high level of Merlot.

CHABLIS
ST BRIS
Jean-Louis Quinson made his name in southern Burgundy and makes interesting wines showing all the facets of local terroir.
In 1951, at the age of eighteen, Georges Duboeuf began delivering wine to local restaurants on his bicycle. He has gone onto to be named un-crowned king of Beaujolais and was instrumental in creating the first ever Beaujolais Nouveau Race.
Renowned the world over for producing some of the greatest wines from the Chardonnay grape, the Chablis region is often plagued with unfortunate weather conditions, which of late have greatly reduced the quantity of wine available. This in turn has forced prices to increase through global demand.
We have added in the Domaine du Guette du Sol to our range which offers consistent quality at a reasonable price.
In addition we are proud to represent some great producers like William Fèvre whose wines are regarded as being in the top rank and are as good as you will taste from the region. We list a few but can source whatever customers require.
The Domaine of Jean-Marc Brocard includes 180 hectares, of which 40 are biodynamic. The approach is one of minimal intervention in both vineyard and winery: cultivation is practically organic throughout resulting in a pure, unadorned expression of the great chalk slopes of Chablis.
The estate of Domaine Bois D’yver is entirely organic viticulture, which they believe benefits the health of the vineyard and of course the quality of the fruit. The wines tend to go through malolactic fermentation so have a softness that sets them apart.

A good selection of Burgundy always enhances a list and we are fortunate enough through our Chairman Sir David Murray, to own a very good vineyard, Domaine Jessiaume. This small jewel sits welcomingly at the entrance to the tiny spa town of Santenay in the Côte de Beaune. Built in 1850, it comprises over 37 acres including some of the best Cru Vineyards throughout the Côte.
We represent the outstanding renowned house of Bouchard Père Et Fils which can trace its origins back to 1731 now owned by the Champagne Henriot family. Recent investment has resulted in a modern Winery on the outskirts of Beaune, thus allowing the old ramparts, part of which used to store their wine, to become more of a tourist attraction. The results are benchmark examples being produced of each appellation which can be sourced to suit customer requirements.
Vincent Girardin focuses on quality above all else and there is a new level of energy and refinement to entice the purists.
In an effort to offer an affordable selection of good Domaines we have added a number of wines from the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais such as Bouchard Macon Lugny St Pierre and Vire Clesse, Domaine de l’Epinet.

We are fortunate in representing some of the great wine producers of the Rhone, with our selection being extensive in all price categories.
Maison Chapoutier through Michel, has carved a reputation for being the world leader in biodynamic / organic viticulture and wine making, which reflects in their wines’ top quality status. In all cases, they are wines of superb balance: oak is never more than a supporting role and it is the character of the fruit that sings from the wine.
The domaine of Guigal ranks among the very best producers of the Rhone with their Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc proving to be the best selling white of the entire region due to its quality. Their vineyards in the ancient village of Ampuis are over 2,400 years old and you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. We are in the position of accessing wine from any specific wine from their vineyards by customer request.
Delas has adopted a more modern ‘boutique’ approach to their winemaking under Jacques Grange : there is more (though not excessive) new wood in evidence; fining and filtration have been minimized; cold soaks and lees contact have boosted fruit intensity and textural richness. The newly rebuilt winery is now gravity-fed for the gentlest possible handling of the wine, and with eighty-five small tanks installed, there is huge scope for very precise blending.

PAYS D’OC ROSÉ WINES

PROVENCEThe Region has now established itself as the leading area for top class rosé production. Château Routas is no exception; In 2005 Sir David Murray took ownership, ushering in a new era for Château Routas. The changes have had great effect culminating in a Decanter International trophy for the rosé.
PAYS D’OC Wine making in this Region has progressed out of all recognition in the past twenty years. Much has been learnt from New World techniques and adapted to French tradition and terroir. E.U. investment in machinery and wine making equipment has transformed many of the Estates we represent.
Domaine De La Baume was, for example, one the first to pick grapes entirely at night and to adopt a master micro-oxygenation to preserve the freshness and fruitiness for several years. The result is a superb range of wines in heavy weight bottles which over deliver for their price point.
The potential for this area has not been lost by some of Frances greatest wine producers. Baron Phillippe De Rothschild are making some very good examples of what the area has to offer. For value for money Baron D’Arignac stands out, making great house wines and have still not moved into screw cap, offering the traditional restaurant a corkscrew alternative.

MAS DE DAUMAS GASSACIn the beautiful rugged terrain of the Languedoc lie some of the best terroir, much of it untapped. In fact this house has been called the Lafite of the Languedoc, reflecting the balance and poise this wine has. The Grand Vin Rouge takes more inspiration from Bordeaux and is Cabernet based, where the white is a more unusual blend of Chardonnay, Viognier & Petit Manseng.
LANGUEDOC APPELATIONSBased in the Côtes du Thongue, Beauvignac are well awarded for their wines. Producing fragrant wines such as this cracking Picpoul which always over delivers for its price point.
Haut Monplaisir are a small family domaine who converted to organic viticulture some years ago. Although making use of modern technology, they produce a traditional style of dark, concentrated cahors.

NORTHERN ITALY
Our list represents some of the greatest wine making dynasties in all of Italy, covering every important region.
As the reader will observe however, we have attempted to balance the big, famous names with other quality producers from the same area. So too are price points balanced from some of the rare, highly sought costly wines through to much humbler offerings, which in our opinion deliver exceptional value for their quality.
PIEDMONTEPrunotto, Famiglia Antinori this renowned winery in Piedmonte owns plots in the de facto grands crus of Bric Turot and Bussia. The quality of the top wines goes without saying with a style that is modern without being exaggerated: freshness of aroma and approachability of structure are viewed as positives with the only wines that see the inside of a brand new barrique are the outstanding single vineyard Barberas.
The region is famous for Barolo, produced from the Nebbiolo grape. The excellent wine producer Renato Ratti makes a single varietal from Nebbiolo--Langhe ‘Ochetti’ which is quite outstanding.
VENETOThe Veneto offers wine producers a great variety of growing conditions which suits all kinds of wine production.
Undoubtedly our wines from Masi and Tedeschi are at the forefront of this area’s top quality producers. Campofiorin redefines the outstanding quality of this area. At the forefront Masi Amarone Costasera Classico is a wine style other producers aspire to replicate. Let us not forget everyday café wines like Pinot Grigio from the great Prosecco estate of Villa Sandi which offer an Estate wine which many producers would like to emulate.

NORTHERN ITALY
CENTRAL ITALY
TRENTINO ALTO ADIGEThis region boasts the great winery of Castel Firmian, Mezzacorona where the quality of cool growing condition white wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio excel. The reds which are grown on the southerly plateau offer great freshness and varietal character.
Covering a vastly diverse area, from Pisa in the east to Abruzzo in the central south, the many and varied styles and regions are expanded on below. It is common that great wine family dynasties, are often more famous than the historic regions they work.

CENTRAL ITALY
UMBRIANiccolo` Antinori bought the fourteenth-century Castello della Sala in 1940, to provide a source of white wines to match the excellence of his Tuscan reds. With the introduction of Cervaro della Sala in 1987, his dream was fully realized: this is one of Italy’s defining whites, as influential and sought-after as Tignanello. Bramìto del Cervo is effectively a mini-Cervaro, further proof of Umbria’s affinity with Chardonnay. The inhabitants of the castle originally ruled over the whole province of Orvieto, so the range would not be complete without a flagship example of the DOC; the ‘Superiore’ designates much lower permitted yields, and hence considerable concentration.
BOLGHERISituated in Maremma on the Tuscan coast, ninety-six kilometres southwest of Florence, the Guado al Tasso Estate owned by Familglia Antinori extends from the green hills surrounding the old village of Bolgheri down to the sea. This beautiful plain is called the Anfiteatro Bolgherese due to the fact that the hills enclose the plains overlooking the sea to form a natural amphitheatre. The Bolgheri DOC started out as rose-only; whites were permitted in 1984, and ten years later the laws finally recognized the extraordinary success of the mould-breaking Cabernet-based reds.

CHIANTIThe Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries, and exporting it for four; that’s twenty-six generations of uninterrupted family ownership! The first recorded mention of the family dates from 1188, when they worked in the silk trade. They moved to Florence in the early thirteenth century, and remain central figures in the fabric of the city; Piazza Antinori is the square in the historic centre where their offices are located.
Winemaking was added to the family’s activities in 1385, and during the sixteenth century the wines spread, along with Antinori’s reputation, to France, Flanders, Spain and North Africa. The purchase of the Tignanello estate in 1900 marked the beginning of a remarkable period of expansion, which shows no signs of abating. Through judicious acquisition of vineyards and an uncanny knack for developing iconic wines, Antinori has become Tuscany’s – arguably Italy’s – pre-eminent wine producer, with an important presence in Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia. Marchese Piero Antinori sums up the company’s outlook: “Ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation.”
Tuscany and Umbria are the regions where Antinori has the highest concentration of vineyards, totalling almost 1,400 hectares of prime sites. Some of the wines – Badia a Passignano, Pèppoli, Tignanello and Solaia – are each the product of a single estate, while Villa Antinori, Chianti Riserva and the Vinsanto are blends of selected lots from several of the family’s vineyards, including the flagship Tenuta Tignanello.
The name Barone Ricasoli has been linked to wine since 1141, when Brolio Castle passed into the hands of the Ricasoli family. In 1872 after more than thirty years of research and experiments Chianti was born, when Baron Bettino Ricasoli wrote down the formula in a famous letter “I verified the results of the early experiments, that is, that the wine receives most of its aroma from the Sangioveto (which is my particular aim) as well as a certain vigour in taste; the Canajuolo gives it a sweetness which tempers the harshness of the former without taking away any of its aroma, though it has an aroma all of its own; the Malvagia, which could probably be omitted for wines for laying down, tends to dilute the wine made from the first two grapes, but increases the taste and makes the wine lighter and more readily suitable for daily consumption.“ Thus a legendary wine was born.

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINOBrunello is the driest zone of Tuscany, and has a winning combination of warm days and cool nights, allowing Sangiovese to reach optimum ripeness while retaining acidity and maximising concentration. The result is one of Italy’s grandest appellations, in which Antinori bought this well-sited estate in 1995. The wine spends at least two years in large oak barrels to soften the tannins and allow its complexity to emerge.
Poggio Antico is located in Montalcino, a small town in Tuscany about fifty kilometres south of Siena. The development of Poggio Antico started in the late 1970s, when electricity was brought in, vineyards were planted, and construction of the wine cellar began. Located at an average altitude of approximately 450 metres above sea level, Poggio Antico is one of the highest-altitude producers of Brunello. The breezes at this altitude keep the grapes disease-free, promoting purity in the wine, while the stringent yields impart considerable concentration..

VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANOWith its warmer climate and local variant of Sangiovese – Prugnolo – Vino Nobile offers a richer, headier experience than Chianti to the north. The wines have been made for at least 1,200 years; Antinori joined the party in typically impressive style in 1990. The La Braccesca Estate,Famiglia Antinori straddles Vino Nobile and the neighbouring appellation, Cortona, which is proving Italy’s most successful appellation for Syrah.
CENTRAL ITALIAN WHITE WINEEnrico Teruzzi is a true Tuscan pioneer, being not only one of the first people in the region to install temperature control in his cellar, but also doing much to save Vernaccia from extinction. Admittedly, the legislation was already in place to do so: Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first DOC to be created, in 1966, eight years before Enrico’s arrival. Nonetheless, his determination has ensured that this most characterful of Tuscany’s indigenous white varieties is more than a legal curiosity. San Gimignano, close to the Chianti zone, also has a growing reputation for Sangiovese.
The famous Frascatti appellation in the volcanic hills surrounding Rome finds a consistently good producer in Gotto d’Oro, the first winegrowers’ association in the region. This superiore version offers a slightly weightier take on the traditional blend of Malvasia, Trebbiano and Greco.
One of Italy’s finest white grapes, Verdicchio’s most famous wine comes from the Fattoria Ceci in the Castelli di Jesi zone twenty miles from the Marches’ Adriatic coast.
CENTRAL ITALIAN RED WINEThe wine of Montepluciano d’Abruzzo is certainly well known, the wine coming from the region is indeed prodigious. They key is to source producers with quality rather than quantity at heart. Itynera is a balanced medium-weight example, making use of toasty oak barrels to add complexity
SWEET WINESAntinori produce two very differing styles. Their Vin Santo come exclusively from the three Antinori estates in Chianti Classico, and are carefully selected . Once picked, the grapes are spread by hand on special straw mats in the appassitoio, a large, airy loft on the Tignanello estate, and left to dry until mid-December. They were then pressed, and the must transferred into traditional 50-200 litre oak casks. Fermentation ceased when the wine reached an alcohol level of 14%. The wine was then aged in the caratelli for about three years, before a very light filtration and bottling.
Muffato della Sala vineyards are situated between 200 and 400 metres above sea level, on soil rich in marine fossils with some clay. The grapes were hand picked in several phases between late October and late November, depending on the progress of the Botrytis cinerea.

PUGLIATormaresca is made up of two estates in different areas of Puglia: in the central, inland region of Castel del Monte they have Aglianico, and in the Salento peninsula of the extreme south-east, Primitivo and Negroamaro. Antinori invested here in 1998, yet in that time Tormaresca has become a flagship of Puglian production.
Paola Leo are a family owned producer, using their own estates to show the best of Puglian varieties. For value for money this region is still unsurpassed in Italy.
SICILIAN WHITE WINESUndoubtedly the most exciting and improved region in all of Italy, this beautiful and varied island off the Toe of Italy. Varying from baking hot on the western coast where irrigation is a necessity, to the snow capped mountains in the north east. The focus has been of reducing quantity and replacing it with quality. Leading in this crusade is the Tasca d’Almerita family
The large Regaleali estate, high in the central Sicilian hills, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. Ever since, the property has been run according to the best principles of the agricultural aristocracy: with one eye firmly on quality, and the other on experimentation.
Tasca’s large range is the product of the family’s most successful innovations, including short pruning for lower yields, the championing of local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, the introduction of French varieties, and the use of barriques and temperature control. This is a singularly accomplished range of Sicilian wines.
The head winemaker of Canapi is Steffano Chioccioli, who comes with vast experience all over Italy. More than 70 of Steffano’s wines have received trebicchieri in Gambero Rosso, and several of his wines have achieved 100 points from Robert Parker. Stefano relishes the challenge of nurturing each and every wine from grape to bottle, ensuring that they are all made to the highest quality standard and are true expressions of their provenance. Boasting their new Sicilian Sailor themed labels, the canapi range show the best single varieties of Sicily.

SARDINIAPala’s roots go deep into the land of Sardinia. Salvatore Pala established the estate in 1950; since 1995 his son Mario has transformed both winery and vineyards into a modern-day reference point for Sardinian wine. The mixture of grapes on the island matches its location: as well as sharing the Vermentino with Corsica, Provence and western Italy, it has also received considerable input from Spain, in the form of Cannonau (Grenache), Bovale (Mourvèdre) and Carignano. Pala capture this diversity, offering wines of modern purity with genuine Sardinian style.

CATALUNYAStretching from the hot Mediterranean coast to the altitudes where cold is a useful quality factor, this region, centred on the vibrant city of Barcelona, produces a wide range of styles.
Torres is simultaneously both one of the most well known wineries in the world and yet still constantly innovating. Work on developing low alcohol yeast strains combines with their production of a low alcohol white wine. Moving out of their homeland of Penedes, Torres now have wineries in Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat. Their environmental credentials are strong too: Miguel A. Torres was given the Lifetime Achievement 2011 Award for his commitment to the environment at the Drinks Business Green Awards. Combined with one of the world’s most recognisable Brandies, Torres are a company to be respected and their products to be enjoyed.
PRIORATThis small region is south west and inland from Barcelona with a growing number of wineries established over the past 40 years. The Garnacha grape produces concentrated minerally wines-developed over recent years with the addition of Cariñena and Syrah plantings.
BIERZOTucked away in central north east Spain, this small region’s greatest assest is the Godello grape which can produce extremely fine wines worth ageing.
RIAS BAIXASThe Albarino grape has become extremely fashionable in recent years and flourishes in Rias Baixas. Galicia is renowned for its seafood, and this wine has evolved to be a perfect match.Casal Caeiro is in the coolest section of the Rias Baixas DO. The eleven hectares of vineyards owned by the estate yield a wine of delightful apricot fruit balanced by mineral freshness. Pepa Albariño made by wine maker Antonio Muñoz, has recently won many awards

RUEDALandlocked in the high vineyards of the Douro Valley, this elevated region within Castilla y Leon, is where the fragrant Verdejo grape is king, producing wines of superb freshness and interesting flavours.
The Bodegas y Viñedos Viña Mayor project began in Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid) in 1986, with a track record of crafting wines with personality, a modern style and elegance for more than 20 years.
RIOJA BLANCO AND ROSADOThe Rioja region, half way between Bilbao and Zaragoza in north east Spain is responsible for putting Spain on the fine wine map in the last 150 years. Split over the sub regions, Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja, the diversity of terrain and climate is immense and posses many challenges to good wine making. With their use of American oak maturation giving the reds a signature style of vanilla and smoothness that is universally appealing.
Bodegas Frederico Paternina’s Crianza is thought to be the most popular in all Spain. Made in traditional style balancing the charm of Tempranillo with the savoury flavours that people choose Rioja for. The range bursts with quality and astonishing value for money.
The roots of Bodegas Valdemar go back to 1889 and Joaquin Martínez Bujanda, and it remains an independent estate, specialising purely in Rioja. Unusually for Rioja, all the grapes used by Bodegas Valdemar come from estate vineyards (290 hectares of them), giving unrivalled control over the quality of the fruit at every level. The range of wines makes the most of this consistency and flexibility, from unoaked entry-level Riojas bursting with flavour, to dense, complex rarities that offer even the most hardened aficionado something new.

SPAIN
RIBERA DEL DUEROThis region only came to the forefront of the wine world in the 1980’s when a few pioneers from the region began experimenting with the red grape variety Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grown at high altitudes of 3,000ft which bring cool nights after incredibly hot days. Developing and refining by the introduction of Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc to the blends now produce some of Spain’s finest wines.
Bodegas Alexandros set up and run by Alejandro Fernandez, was called a madman when establishing his winery. He was planting vines when others were grubbing them up to replace with beetroot production. A tenacious approach with innovation being the first to use the espalier vine training system for example, has yielded outstanding results with some of the regions finest wines.
MURCIAMurcia is one of Spain’s smaller, lesser-known regions, tucked away in the country’s far southeastern corner. The classic Murcian wine is a robust, fruit-driven red made from Monastrell.
Finca el Paso produce a full bodied and rich wine especially suited to the local Murcia sausage or even a Stornoway Black Pudding!
CASTILLA Y LEON AND LA MANCHAThis region covers a wide area including the DO regions of Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Toro down to Valdespeñas and
La Mancha in Central Spain. With recent large investments in replanting vineyards and installing modern wine making equipment, this large area now replaced mass jug production with good value mid priced red and white wines.
Finca Antigua estate in La Mancha built in 1998 a stunning avant-garde winery. At the very high altitude of 900 metres, and with plenty of limestone in the soil, the wines have far more finesse than others from this large appellation.
Candidato is Familia Martinez Bujanda’s entry-level range, and draws on the expertise of the group to offer beautifully made wines at stunningly low prices. The varietal wines are unoaked and packed with fruit, while the Barrica 3 sees three months in wood for extra depth and spice.
Sol y Sombra is a pair of unique Spanish wines made to pair with food, a bit of Day of the Dead thrown in, resulting in something highly memorable and a house wine with a difference.
Barcelo Estates built on their success in Rioja to launch this new innovative range of Storks’ Tower Estates wines from an exciting new and fashionable region of Spain, with the best of winemaking skills and consistency.

ROSADOSpain’s reputation as a sunshine destination allows us to dream of warm days sipping chilled fruity rose wines to while away a lazy afternoon. Hijos de Antonia Barcelo is one of Spain’s Century old Bodegas, producing quality wines such as the Penascal Clasico since 1876. The Penascal brand is the undisputed wine leader in Spain. Made from 100% Tempranillo grapes from their own 3000Ha estates near Medina del Campo, Valladolid; this wine is slightly sparkling (Petillant) and bottled in an easily recognisable and distinctively shaped bottle.
SANGRIAA traditional recipes features red wine mixed with fruits, such as pineapple, peaches, nectarines, berries, apples, pears, and melon, sweetened with sugar and orange juice. Lighter in alcohol due to the dilution, this makes a great value fun drink.
The Bacalhoa winery led Portuguese wine into the modern era, introducing the best of modern technology creating cleaner wines which up until then had not been Portugal’s strength. For all their modernism, they retain the core of Portuguese wines, indigenous grapes found nowhere else making wines that are unique, a rare quality in these days of international varieties.
The JP wines are both in a modern style and unoaked, while the Catarina employs some sensitive oak ageing.
The Altano winery is owned by the Symington family of port fame. Using some of their vineyards originally planted for port production, they now make a series of table wines from the traditional Douro grapes.

AUSTRIANIEDERÖSTERREICHWinzer Krems is one of the most significant producers and the most successful exporter of estate bottled quality wine in Austria. The estate is owned by 981 winegrowers who grow their grapes on 990 Ha in Krems and the surrounding wine growing regions. Nearly the whole harvest will be carried out by hand. The grapes are separated according to the variety, the different qualities, and the particular locations of origin, so that a wide range of individual wine qualities and specialities can be bottled. Every bottle from Winzer Krems is an event in itself, filled with the affinity between the land and the vine.
S A PRUMFamily-owned S.A. Prüm, founded in 1911 by Sebastian Alois Prüm, has been in the hands of Raimund Prüm, head winemaker and Sebastian’s grandson, since 1971. Under Raimund’s leadership the property has earned a reputation as one of the most successful wineries in Germany’s celebrated Mosel wine region.
Over 15 acres of S.A. Prüm’s holdings are located within the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr (“sundial of Wehlen”) domaine. Named for the historic sundial painted on an outcrop of slate by a Prüm ancestor back in 1842, the incredibly steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is a renowned source of what is arguably Germany’s finest Riesling.
SLOVENIA
QUERCUS - GORIŠKA BRDAThe Quercus wines are made a stone’s throw (a couple of miles, anyway) from Marco Felluga’s Collio vineyards. Goriška Brda is Slovenian for Collio Goriziano, and while these hills may be divided by a political boundary, viticulturally they are one and the same. Angela Muir MW consults on the winemaking, so the result is fresh, modern wines that offer an extra terroir-driven elegance for the price.
DOMAINE BOYARLike many of the post-communist countries Bulgaria has been reinventing it’s wine scene. Increased exposure to the wine drinking world drives this further on, where once there was no incentive for quality now they offer amongst the best value for money to be found. Domaine Boyar is the industry leader for the country, and this range of wines typifies the fact that there are good wines to be found in the country.

MACEDONIASTOBI WINERYMany will be unfamiliar with Macedonian winemaking, but they have a long history stretching back to Roman times. A large investment has meant Stobi is now at the forefront of modern Macedonian wine production. Based in Tikveš, they have a terroir similar to that of Tuscany or Bordeaux and suitable for both reds and whites. They champion both local varieties and more recognisable ‘international’ grapes. The whites are all unoaked and fresh, two of the wines based on the local varieties. The Vranec is their signature indigenous red; not dissimilar to Malbec with a deep red colour and dark spicy fruit.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
SAINSTBURYOne of the USA’s best respected producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Saintsbury has been championing an elegant more “European” style for over twenty-five years. Dick Ward and David Graves met at oenology classes at UC Davis in 1977 and founded Saintsbury in 1981, two years before the Carneros appellation was officially recognized. Since then they have remained at the forefront of experimentation in both vineyard and cellar, with detailed investigation into (among other things) clones, irrigation and filtration helping them continually refine the style of their wines and stay at the top of the quality tree.
ENGLAND
CHAPEL DOWN Chapel Down is one of England’s leading producers, their sparkling is regarded amongst the top tier. England has the terroir and people, as more vineyards are planted they will become more recognised on the world stage. Several sparkling wines have beaten off their Champenoise rivals to major trophies. They will always be at the premium level which allows the winemakers equally to making the best of their resources.
UNION WINEFrom their childhood escapades with lemonade stands and wood-working shop sales, brothers Eric Christopher and Ryan Michael Harms have long held the spark of entrepreneurial spirit. Both being in the wine industry. They formed Christopher Michael Wines. They focus their efforts on finding expressive fruit that produces vibrant and fresh wines. Without worrying about geographic boundaries, Ryan and Eric look to work with growers that farm sustainably and seek out the best expressions of their grapes.
DOMAINE DROUHINThe Drouhin Family’s winemaking roots run deep, having taken hold in Burgundy’s best vineyards more than a century ago. For more than 25 years now, the Drouhin Family has brought a wealth of hard-earned experience to their vineyards in the Willamette Valley, just southwest of Portland, Oregon. Where there had only been Christmas trees and wheat, the Drouhin’s began planting their first vineyards in Oregon. The estate winery in the Dundee Hills creates elegant, fine Pinot Noir forged from the family’s tradition of fine winemaking in France. As they say: ‘French soul, Oregon Soil’.

BONNY DOON VINEYARDBonny Doon’s irreverent owner, Randall Grahm, was an original California Rhône Ranger. One of those pioneer wine-makers to bring the wines of France’s Rhône Valley Stateside. Literally translated, ‘Le Cigare Volant’ is French for ‘The Flying Cigar’, a euphemism for a Flying Saucer.
These wines are a homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape from similar grapes used in the Rhône and are flagship wines for the house.
AU BON CLIMATIn 1974, Jim Clendenen taking a year out from legal studies went to visit France. After spending time in Burgundy and Champagne, he was inspired to drop his law career and move into wine making. He has become one of America’s most noted producers, no surprise perhaps that the focus is on Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, and the wines follow Burgundian traditions to give elegance. He has been named as one of the top fifty winemakers in the world by more than one critic. These are wines well worth adding to your list.
JACKSON FAMILY WINESAs well as making one of America’s benchmark wines in their Chardonnay, the company is actually a collection of several autonomous wineries.
This allows them to express individual terroir. Committed from the start to producing the best wines possible, they have been a strong force in the growth of the wine industry in California.
CHILEVIÑA SANTA LUZ - LUIS FELIPE EDWARDSLuis Felipe Edwards are a rising star in Chile, one of a very small number still expanding, their judicious acquisition of vineyards has allowed them to make great wines at all levels. For an entry level range Santa Luz is full of varietal character, from zingy Sauvignon to meaty Cabernet. The Reserva wines provides greater concentration.

LOS TRONCOS - FAIRTRADEFair trade wines seek to support the local communities where viticulture are key to the economy. Formed following a devastating earthquake in central Chile in 1939, the Los Troncos Co-operative works to improve conditions in the local community and was the first fair-trade accredited wine producer in South America.
VIÑA SANTA RITASanta Rita was founded in 1880, a boom time for Chile while the rest of the world suffered the scourge of phylloxera. It was a driving force from the very start; the founder, Domingo Fernández, introduced not just French equipment and expertise but also electricity to the Alto Jahuel region, where the winery is still based. As Chile’s second largest owner of vineyards, Santa Rita can draw on a great diversity of terroir, where the various grape varieties can be matched to the soil and climate of individual regions.
The three winemakers make the most of Santa Rita’s exceptional resource in their comprehensive range. Gran Hacienda expresses the pristine varietal character of Chilean fruit; selected vineyard sites give the Reserva wines greater intensity and structure. The Medalla Real Cabernet is a single-estate wine, bringing added focus and terroir character. The range is crowned with Casa Real; from a single vineyard planted in the 1950s, it ranks amongst Chile’s very greatest wines.

LAPOSTOLLESince the winery’s foundation in 1994 it has pursued an uncompromising approach to quality. Their objective is as simple as it is ambitious: to create world-class wines using French expertise and the superb terroirs of Chile.
The Lapostolle holdings consist of three vineyards, each in a different region and each chosen specifically for its affinity to certain grape varieties: Casablanca for Chardonnay and Pinot; Requinoa for Syrah, Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet; Apalta for Merlot, Cabernet, Carmenère and Sémillon. Conversion to biodynamic viticulture is almost complete, and reflects the obsessive attention to detail that already pervades Lapostolle. Not only is the fruit hand-harvested at night, but much of it is hand-destemmed, to ensure it begins fermentation in immaculate condition.
TAMARIND GARDEN Following an extensive tasting we have carefully sourced and blended a pair of wines to match Indian cuisine. The wines are abundant with fruit yet not high in either acidity or tannin so as to pair perfectly with aromatic and spicy dishes.
VIÑA SANTA HELENASanta Helena have been with Wine Importers for a number of years, such has been the consistently enjoyable nature of their wines with generous fruit.

MIGUEL TORRES CHILEMiguel Torres Chile was founded in 1979 by the Torres family. The family have been producing wines in Spain for more than 140 years and have already owned vineyards for more than 300 years. After a failed search for a destination in America for the development of viniculture, the firm acquired a vineyard of 100 hectares close to the Andes mountain range and a small cellar near Curicó. The presence of extremely varied seasons and spectacular differences between the maximum and minimum temperatures and the climatic influence of the Humboldt Current played fundamental roles. The strong differences in day and night were ideal for the vineyard improving the capacity of the grapes to accumulate their best aromas.
Miguel Torres Chile was also the first to introduce new technologies in the production of wine such as fermentation in stainless steel tubs and ageing in French oak barrels along with contributing to the growth of Chilean wines in the last 30 years.
Today the winery has approximately 400 hectares of vineyards planted in 6 properties with well differentiated characteristic climates. This allows for the cultivation of diverse varieties and production of wines with intense varietal characters. This new era in the Chilean Winery was focused on organic viticulture and Fair Trade certification of the line of wines best-known by consumers; Santa Digna (Fair for Life). These advances have helped to make it a more sustainable company as well as carry out many projects among the various populations close to Curicó.
ARGENTINA
BODEGA NORTONBodega Norton is a winery founded in the Mendoza area of Argentina. It was created in 1895 by English engineer Sir Edmund James Palmer Norton. The first production came from French imported vines.
At Bodega Norton, vineyards are divided into small parcels that enable the work and individual tracking to achieve their maximum potential. Due to the soil, age and type of plant differences within each parcel, this system enables the making of a “wine project” for every parcel. The Finca la Colonia range highlights the key varietals grown on the estates, of especial mention are those signature Argentinean grapes of Torrontes and Malbec. The Collecion range are more structured wines from better quality fruit, whilst the Privada is one of Argentina’s great fine wines, extremely well scored and awarded.

FINCA PERDRIELPerdriel is a single vineyard owned by Norton, but such is the quality they keep these wines separate and bottled in their own right. They show a more savoury character, with spice and dark fruit with great concentration found from the high altitude and long ripening the fruit receives.
MASIMasi are world famous in their homeland of Veneto, but are also turning heads for their Argentinean venture. The wines are a hybrid of Venetian techniques and Argentinean soul. The reds involve drying the grapes, ripasso style for Passo Doble and full appassimento style for Corbec, an homage to Masi’s award winning Amarone. This year sees the first organic certification for the wines.
BEEFSTEAK CLUBThe Beefsteak Wine Club, established in 1705, was created with steak and wine lovers in mind and honours the dining clubs of the 18th and the 19th century, which celebrated the Beefsteak as a symbol of liberty and prosperity. Fans of good steak are often equally enthusiastic about their wines. The Beefsteak Wine Club recognises this match made in heaven and brings together these two passions.
Argentina, a paradise for many wine and beef lovers, has to be the first port of call and the first Beefsteak Club could be no other than the country’s signature wine, The Meaty Malbec.
FINCA DECERODecero means from scratch reflecting the fact that this is a new project. The vineyard is exceptionally high at over 3000m, with a considerable diurnal temperature range. The winery is ultra modern, gravity fed and in both vineyard and winery organic practices are followed. The wines are a huge success, combining concentration with some dark fruits. You will struggle to find a better Malbec in Argentina.
ELEMENTOSA pair of wines featuring slightly unusual blends: the white is superb with the Chardonnay taming the aromatic Viogner while the red is a mix of ripe fruit and savoury spice.

THREE PILLARSA range of varietal wines from South Australian fruit showing beautiful ripeness and clear varietal expression.
THE ACCOMPLICEMade by the experienced De Bortoli family, the idea behind the making and nomenclature of these wines is that they are the perfect accomplice to food. The whites are at once vibrant and fresh, with the juicy fruit you would expect.
FOX GROVE
VICTORIA PARK A new range of wines from the Yalumba stable to compliment their existing range. Sourcing the fruit from Riverland, the wines are given the usual fastidious care and attention to ensure quality.
DE BORTOLIDe Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo. One of Australia’s ‘founding families’ they are extremely well regarded. Their signature wine is of course the Noble One, a botryrised Semillon made to rival any of the great sweet wines of the world.

YALUMBA Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch “Yalumba” – aboriginal for “all the land around”. 160 years later Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.
YALUMBA - Y SERIESAccessible wines of exceptional value that offer the opportunity to experiment with new varieties, styles and fashions, while holding true to their beliefs of raising the bar.
YALUMBA - ORGANICS Yalumba is an industry leader in environmental stewardship; reducing carbon emissions, increasing biodiversity and exploring organic viticulture. These wines recognise their ongoing commitment to environmental management, crafted from certified organically grown grapes.
YALUMBA - SAMUEL’S GARDEN A collection of wine celebrating Yalumba’s direct lineage to Australia’s first vine plantings, some of which could be found in Samuel Smith’s garden 165 years ago. These wines demonstrate the diversity and quality of the Barossa.

YALUMBA - DISTINGUISHED SITES Wines from venerable and elite vineyards whose provenance have been identified for individuality, consistency and a unique expression of Barossa terroir.
YALUMBA - SECOND GENERATION The little brothers of our Rare & Fine stalwarts, crafted with the backing of premium wine experience and created to enjoy now.
YALUMBA - FINE & RAREWines of conviction that showcase 165 years of winemaking expertise and integrity. Crafted only when all the elements of viticulture and winemaking interact perfectly. These wines are only produced in exceptional vintages.
YALUMBA - MUSEUMIn 1853 Samuel Smith, founder of Yalumba, first began making wines at his Angaston winery from the fruit of vines he started planting in 1849. The production of fortified wines has always been part of that history. Today, Yalumba maintains its reputation for premium quality fortified wines by occasionally releasing very small parcels of show reserve stocks.
PEWSEY VALEPewsey Vale is a single vineyard in Eden Valley originally planted by the German settlers. It is no surprise therefore to learn that Riesling is the grape and it grows here with excellent aplomb. Parallel to the Barossa valley but considerably cooler as it has more elevation, it suits aromatics perfectly. These are textbook Aussie Riesling, bone dry full of citrus and stone fruit. The Contours is drawn from the oldest part of the vineyard (following the contours of the hill rather than terraced) and has a minimum of five years bottle age. It shows much more developed characteristics of honey and the signature kerosene note.
HEGGIES VINEYARD This is another single estate previously farmed by a man named Heggie. Nowadays it is an homage to Burgundy; they have been working extremely hard on their Chardonnay. Burgundian clones, well seasoned French oak for elegance, it is a complex wine with many layers. The Riesling speaks of the German herritage of the region, a botrytis affected wine; big on pure fruit and complex honey and caramel notes, much more delicate than the big muscats of Rutherglen!

JIM BARRY This eponymous estate hardly needs an introduction. In the Armagh, he has created one of Australia’s best fine wines. A fraction of the price but big on flavour is the McRae Wood, a vineyard planted with cuttings from the Armagh vineyard. The next generation is now in charge of winemaking which has resulted in a new wine, the Barry Bros.
EARTHWORKS A collaboration from two main vineyards, the wines are classic Barossa. Big and bold with superb concentration.
RUNNING WITH BULLSRobert Hill Smith spent a vintage in Spain and was fascinated by the Tempranillo grape. Also recognising the similar terroir in hot & dry South Australia he seeked to create his own version. Using seasoned oak from Yalumba’s own cooperage, the wine has bright berry fruit with subtle vanilla flavours.
BROKENWOOD Since 1970, Brokenwood’s wines have evolved from a weekend venture for self-professed hobby winemakers into one of Australia’s most reputable wine labels. Founded by a trio of Sydney based solicitors; Tony Albert, John Beeston and James Halliday. The first vintage was planted in 1973, it was a labour of love for the partners, friends and family they conscripted to help, with the grapes being carried to the winery in buckets in the back seat of Len Evan’s Bentley! While none of the partners claimed to know anything about viticulture, the wine received praise, and attracted a loyal following from its first vintage. Growth was steady until the boom in 1978, when six new partners joined, allowing the purchase of the next door ‘Graveyard’ Vineyard. Designated as a cemetery by the local town planners, but never used as such – phew!

TORBRECK‘I named the wine Torbreck after a forest in Scotland where I worked as a lumberjack’ Dave Powell said after he started the business in 1994. Dave loves the intense, rich, Rhône-like flavours that come from old-vines and the fact that Shiraz and Grenache are the mainstay red grapes of the Northern and Southern Rhône often draws comparison. Torbreck doesn’t only make red wines though; they have Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne planted on their winery block which is blended to make a white wine. These wines are amongst the very finest in Australia, as evinced by a huge number of awards and even a number of perfect Parker scores.
VASSE FELIXMargaret River was a poor dairy town before Vasse Felix set up here. The maritime climate here is different to much of the rest of Australia’s winemaking zones. Parallels have been drawn to the climate of Bordeaux and the wines made here are similar. Of particular note are the premium wines made here, the Heytesbury wines: a selection of the best vineyard parcels, then a further selection of the best barrels from those wines ensure this is the pinnacle of the Vasse Felix range.

NELSON/MARLBOROUGHSauvignon Blanc still rules the roost in New Zealand and Pinot Noir is undoubtedly king of the reds. These are excellent entry level examples showing bright primary fruit and lots of pzazz. Of particular note are the Stoneburn wines, made by the talented Jane Hunter these show great complexity and are huge value for money.

NAUTILUS ESTATENautilus is a small estate dedicated to excellence. With their recently completed Pinot only winery allows them to concentrate on each separate parcel and create the best wine. The Sauvignon is head and shoulders above most other, slightly softer but packing in lots of flavour: elegance is the key. Expect great things to continue to come out of Nautilus.
HUNTERSWhen Irishman Ernie Hunter arrived in New Zealand in 1979 Marlborough had not even been considered as a potential wine growing region. The land was primarily used for farming: growing lucerne, barley and grazing sheep.Nowadays there is barely a sheep to be seen and vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see. Hunters were one of the founders of the region, and this means they have prime land in the heart of the region. The Sauvignon and Pinot are well established and very well awarded, but the rest of the range are equally worth seeking out.
GIESEN ESTATE Giesen Wines have been exclusively produced in New Zealand for over 30 years. While their first vineyard was in Burnham, just outside of Christchurch, the Giesen brothers had their eyes on the Marlborough region, owing to the areas exceptional climate and diverse soils. By 1993, they had purchased a dairy farm and converted it to a vineyard, marking the largest development of its kind at the time. After years of growth, today they personally own and manage 700 acres of vineyards in Marlborough. In addition, they have developed long-term partnerships with some of the region’s best growers to allow them to produce a diverse range of wines.
THE CROSSINGSThe rugged Awatere Valley is no place for the fainthearted, but those who persevere are richly rewarded. Jeff Fyfe, The Crossing’s winemaker is just one of those people. This sub-region of Marlborough produces slow ripening fruit creating crisper, fresher wines with more intense fruit than any other region in Marlborough. Their vineyards are accredited through the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme to ensure the lands are nurtured for future generations.
TWO PADDOCKSTwo Paddocks was established in 1993 by Irish born itinerant actor, Sam Neill. Two Paddocks is the only winery in Central Otago to now own boutique vineyard sites in the three main valleys of Central Otago. Initially though, Sam bought a paddock in Gibbston and aimed to grow a small amount of his favourite grape for friends and family. His good pal, bought the paddock next door and so ‘Two Paddocks’ was born. Of note, 1993 was very early days in the life of modern Central Otago winegrowing - it was still a leap of faith back then. Nowadays the region is 80% planted in pinot noir and is arguably New Zealand’s most successful region with the variety. Two Paddocks is now 4 small vineyards in the Gibbston, Alexandra and most recently Bannockburn regions of Central Otago.

TULBAGH WINERY We are are pleased to list a new trio of wines from a producer that Wine Importers used to list some years ago. Tulbagh was founded in 1906 and have been producing quality wines since 1906. Named for the verdant plateau, the Highveld wines are what the modern customer demands: fruit forward and fresh.
KLEINKLOOFThese wines are the product of the excellent Niel Joubert estate, acquired in 1898 so have good provenance. They represent superb value for money, full of South African sunshine and bright fruity flavours.
CAPE DREAM
STELLAR WINERY (FAIRTRADE & ORGANIC)This is an incredibly forward looking winery committed to respect for both people and environment. The workers own 26% of the shares, and the winery funds a Community Hall for scholastic use, nursery & crèche and a social hub. Strong green credentials too; water recycling in the winery, low sulphur use and an innovative method of storing carbon dioxide produced during fermentation to sell it on for industrial use (dry ice & fire extinguishers). Most notable are the team of Indian Runner ducks which eat all the snails in the vineyard eradicating the need for pesticides and insecticides, and of course give the wines their name.
PAINTED WOLFFounded by Jeremy and Emma Borg, drawing inspiration from the African Wild Dog. Jeremy has over 20 years experience working with wineries in USA, UK and here in South Africa, He has a keen understanding of both wine making and the market and set out with a fresh and different approach. They have a mantra which is ‘Persistently remarkable, remarkably persistent’.

DELHEIM ESTATE Delheim’s origins as a wine estate go back to the 1930s when it was purchased by Hans Otto Hohsenhein and his wife Deli (hence ‘Delheim’, for ‘Deli’s home’). Delheim’s Cellar, situated in the Simonsberg close to Stellenbosch is owned and run by the Sperling family. With Spatz Sperling, nephew of the founders, at the helm, the farm produces a wide range of internationally acclaimed wines. Their philosophy has, and always will be to embrace The Cape’s wine growing traditions whilst always looking to innovate. Delheim have recently been honoured for their laudable conservation commitment to the Cape Floral Kingdom’s biodiversity.
KLEIN CONSTANTIA The Constantia valley, home to Klein Constantia Estate, is the oldest, most enduring vineyard region in the Cape, first producing wine in 1689. Family owned and run, Klein Constantia’s philosophy is founded on quality rather than quantity, reflected in the wines regularly inviting accolades, both locally and internationally. Of special note is the sweet wine, the Vin de Constance. This wine has been noted throughout history by such nobles and aristocracy as Napoleon, Fredrick the Great, Bismark and British Kings and often chosen over Yquem, Tokaji and Madeira. It is referenced in works of Dickens and Jane Austen; indeed old bottles still exist in cellars and command top prices whenever they appear at auction.
BUITENVERWACHTING While a tongue twister to say, it is well worth the effort to learn and order this wine! Buitenverwachting means ‘beyond all expectation’, and was established in 1796, the same year as Cockburns of Leith. Part of the very first vineyard planted in South Africa, they produce wines that are very European in their sophistication and unrivalled for their value for money.
KANU The Kanu is a mythical bird of promise; according to the story, all who fall under its shadow will be blessed with a bountiful harvest. What is more than legend is the quality of the wines, in particular the Chenin Blanc is regarded as the best value for quality example coming out of South Africa.

VERGELEGENFounded on 1 February 1700, Vergelegen (meaning “situated far away”), has been under the ownership of some of the world’s great explorers and visionaries, each of whom, in their own way, have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate. Since the production of its first wine in 1992, Vergelgen Estate and its wines have earned more than 200 awards, including winning the coveted Chateau Pichon Longueville Trophy twice for the Best Bordeaux Blend at the International Wine & Spirits Competition.

CLOOFIf the coastal areas of Constantia and Stellenbosch resemble temperate French wine regions, Darling’s fierce climate has more in common with Spain. Gnarled bush vines push their roots down eight metres into the soil in search of moisture, while the summer sun impels the grapes to concentrated ripeness. This is not white wine territory, but the results for reds are brilliant: heady blends of fruit and savoury flavours, firm ripe tannins, and fresh acidity preserved by the cool night-time temperatures. Cloof is an exemplary ambassador for this exciting region, both for the quality of its wines and its overall approach: the winery has just earned the coveted ‘Biodiversity Champion’ title for its commitment to preserving the local environment.

FORTIFIED WINES - SHERRY
52
WILLIAMS AND HUMBERTWilliams & Humbert winery was founded in 1877 by Sir Alexander Williams, a great admirer and connoisseur of sherry products, and Arthur Humbert, a specialist in international relations. Since then they have preserved part of the original wines and brandies (soleras) in high quality oak casks. These soleras are the base of the development and ageing of every sherry and brandy produced at Bodegas. The Dry Sack, Winters Tale and Walnut Brown are famous names of Britain’s Sherry drinking heritage. The older soleras are incredible, and given the fashions also incredible value for the quality of wine within.
LA GUITASpain’s best-selling Sherry is this dry, tangy, brilliantly refreshing Manzanilla. At 15% alcohol, it is no stronger than many a red wine, and served well chilled is a great accompaniment to olives, nuts and seafood. “Guita” is Spanish for cord, and each bottle has one attached to its neck. However, the brand name “La Guita” comes from the fact that the founder always asked those interested in buying it: “Do you have guita?”, “Guita” being an old Spanish slang word for money. People thus began to call the winery by the name of “La Guita”, and it was officially registered in 1908.
MARSALAMarsala is a fortified wine, dry or sweet, produced in the region surrounding the Italian city of Marsala in Sicily. Marsala first received DOC status in 1969. We are offering the market leader from the Pellegrino Company, family run to this day for over 145 years. Marsala, the wine produced for export is universally fortified similar to Port, Madeira and Sherry. Originally, this addition of alcohol was to ensure that it would last on long ocean voyages.

COGNAC - MERY
THE GLASGOW DISTILLERY COMakar Glasgow Gin is a premium handcrafted Gin produced in small batches in a copper pot still names ‘Annie’. The enlivening power of the finest juniper berries from the heart and soul of Makar Glasgow Gin, which is complimented by seven harmonising botanicals shipped to Glasgow from around the world.
Drawing on the pioneering spirit of Scotland’s first licensed distillers, The Glasgow Distillery Company takes its name from one of Glasgow’s original distilleries. Originally, The Glasgow Distillery Co. was founded in Dundashill in 1770 and remained active until the beginning of the 20th century. Now re-born and located in the city, The Glasgow Distillery Co. is bringing back to life the tradition of metropolitan small-batch craft distillation with the launch of the first gin made in Glasgow; Makar Glasgow Gin.
MONKEY 47 GIN - BAVARIARobert Parker maintains Monkey Gin is the greatest he has ever tasted. ‘If ever a gin deserves 100 points it’s that - the aromatics on it are just amazing’.
MERYDomaine Mery-Melrose is an original and authentic vineyard and distillery, located in the heart of the Grande Champagne Premier Cru of Cognac. There is a marriage of two cultures; Francois Mery’s family has lived in this area for generations while his wife, Janis Melrose is a native of Scotland. The vineyard is “organic”, not out of dogmatic principal but because it is the natural way. The cognacs are distilled traditionally with all their lees, so that during their maturation they express their characters with intensity and acquire roundness and inimitable flexibility after many years of ageing.

OLD WORTHY BREWERY Old men in Scottish pubs have been drinking their ales with a dram since forever. It’s called a Half ‘n Half. It’s what you do in Scotland. At Old Worthy Brewing Co, they love a Half ‘n Half, that special marriage of whisky and beer. Let’s just say- delicious. They source malt from Scotland’s famous whisky distilleries and brew up some mischief. Ales that do justice to the drams we love.
