This Week The Fourth Sunday of Easter

Acts 214a 36-41 1 Peter 220b-25 John 101-10

Background This week is sometimes called ldquo Good Shepherd Sundayrdquo because the Gospel is

always from chapter 10 of Johnrsquos Gospel in which Jesus reflects on himself as the Good Shepherd

This image has its roots in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) where the

leaders of the people where often referred to has shepherds but were

ultimately God was looked to as the Shepherd of Israel (for example Psalm 23

our responsorial psalm this week) Jesus in Johnrsquos Gospel not only defines

himself as the Good shepherd but also as the ldquoGaterdquo through which the sheep

safely pass morning and night and the ldquoSheepfoldrdquo where they can be safe

from predators and robbers

Mary Our first communicants will be part of the procession and our graduating eighth graders in the

crowning ceremony

The month of May we are asked to bring Jiffy Mix for the Breadbasket

Our Parish is asked to volunteer at the Table of Hope on Friday May 26 Please sign the sheet in the back of the church if you wish to volunteer

Stop by the Summit Art Gallery on 3393 Main Street across from Cove Presbyterian Church and purchase a one of a kind artwork by Marian Szeliga By doing this you will not only get an original piece of art but also help the Table of Hope since the proceeds will be donated to support them The artwork will be displayed till the end of June The Summit Art Gallery is open Monday thru Friday from 10 am to 3 pm Never Alone supporting a drug free community announces a ldquoCaring Community Seminarrdquo on Wednesday May 10th from 7-9 pm at the Weirton Medical Center Perspectives on responding to addiction in our community will be discussed The seminar will feature Lisa Pinney who will speak on how trauma effects so many wh are struggling Free admission All are welcome please contact Pattie Barnabei 304-797-1579
