    Who Would Be The Audience For YourMedia Product?

    My film belongs to the genre social realism.

    The demographic that consume this genre is less mainstream than a

    Hollywood audience. They can be deemed more intellectual and artistically

    minded. My research found that 30% of people know about the social

    realism genre, but only 10% enjoyed it.

    Cinemas such as: Arnolfini, TheNational Film Theatre, Cornerhouse, and Picturehouse

    screen social realism films. These cinemas are based around Britain, with the Arnolfini beingin Bristol, and Cornerhouse being in Manchester, and many others being based aroundLondon.

    We know that the demographic that visits venues where social realism films are screenedare more intellectual and ar tistically minded, rather than the more mainstream Hollywoodaudience. We know this from the way the cinemas that screen social realism films presentthemselves, formally with a serious interest in film.

    In an average cinema weekmany cinemas are screeningsocial realism films, such asTyrannosaur. These cinemas

    include Cineworld, ArtsPicturehouses, and Odeon.Certain Odeons arerenowned for showingindependent and socialrealism films, whereas allArts Picturehouses screensocial realism films.Cinemas like Vue do notshow social realism films asthey cater more for the

    16-25 and the mainstreamwider audience who enjoyHollywood films.

    My audience can be found consuming social realism productson such websites as LoveFilm and Netflix.

    These websites cater mostly to the mainstream audience, but

    also offer a wide range of films, such as: British Social Realism.

    There are specific groups on LoveFilm that discuss films,

    specifically Social Realism films. This group represents thedemographic of the interested, serious film watcher that go on

    these sites.

    LoveFilm and Netflix show social realism films, and help

    people find and consume them.

    In LoveFilm individuals can get films sent to them

    via mail, as well as being able to watch films online.

    Individuals can read reviews for films written by

    members of the site, and experts. This website is

    aiming itself towards the demographic which enjoy

    watching films, as well as are interested in different

    films.

    Online websites such as: IMDB, MUBI, and

    LoveFilm show social realism films, and help

    people find and consume them.

    Individuals can become members of IMDB and discuss films with

    other users, as well as read reviews from users and experts.However, it is rare to watch a film on IMDB, although you can.

    The website focuses more on the discussion of movies.

    Therefore, the viewer the platform is designed for must be

    knowledgeable about the kind of films they are researching.

    The viewers online seem to know about the actors and the

    directors, as well as their previous works. This shows that

    they have an interest in social realism films, and research

    them. Therefore, they have a commitment to social realism

    films.This shows that both users and non-users of the

    social realism genre consume social realism films

    online. However, more users than non-users.

    Also, the users seem to be more knowledgable

    about social realism films compared to the non-

    users.

    Characterisation and exploration of themesare more important to the viewers of social

    realism than plot.

    They are intelligent and have a clear understanding of what they are talking about.

    BBC TWO programmed 7 weeks of films. Each week was a different genre, for example:Week 1 Thriller. Social Realism was week 3. The fact that a only 1 week was devoted to 1

    genre suggests that BBC TWO wasnt trying particularly hard to attract any type of specific

    audience. Therefore, theres a possibility users of the social realism genre will come across

    this and watch some films. However, its more likely non-users will be watchingthese films.

    BBC Four are permitted to show avariety of programmes, and premier

    20 international films each year.This is unlike mainstream channels.

    The genres of the programmesBBC Four show are of the genres of

    drama, and comedy, and currentaffairs... Therefore, the

    demographic they are aiming theirprogrammes at is closer to that ofthe demographic for social realism

    films; they are intellectual and moreartistically minded.

    Presently FILM4 broadcasts a lot of

    mainstream Hollywood movies. Also,

    he channel frequently has themednights or seasons during which a

    variety of films centred around one

    genre, director or actor are shown.

    Channel 4 also owns a filmproduction company, FILM4

    Productions, it shows many of its in-house productions. Therefore, thedemographic the channel aims at are

    a mixture of non-users and users of

    the social realism genre.

    BBC RADIO 3 explores the social realism genre.

    We know that the audience demographic for this station

    is intellectual and artistically minded because the stationalso explores Arts, Culture & the Media.This station does

    adaptations of such plays and films as: Look Back in

    Anger.

    Radio3s demographic is of an older age.

    Radio 3 is greatly valued by a relatively small

    but loyal audience who

    appreciate its intelligent, thoughtful and

    committed tone and content.

    station doesnt play music, but

    holds discussions, reviews and

    intelligent game shows. BBC RADIO 4 also holds interviews with actors

    and director of such things as social realism films.

    For example: Olivia Colman was interviewed on

    her film Tyrannosaur. The radio station also

    helps hold screenings of social realism films.

    The Radio4 demographic is described as intelligent, who seekprogrammes in many genres which inform, educate and entertain.

    A conservative, ageing, middle-class audience is a perception amongpeople who dont listen to Radio 4.

    Some view Radio 4 as not having a target audience. This is aninteresting view, and a valid one for some people.

    According to this the demographic for Radio4 are generally Men aged 65+with a social grade of AB.

    Sight and Sound is a film magazine that features social realism

    films. Each film gets a small paragraph summarising the film, and

    usually giving information on the director and actors. Some

    feature films get more information.There are screen shots from

    the films and information surrounding them.

    Therefore, we can assume that the demographic who consume this

    magazine are serious, and interested about films, specifically social

    realism, and international films; less of a mainstream audience.

    I collected demographic research by conducting a paperbased quest ionnaire, and a discussion.The research was towards users and non-users ofthe social realism genre.

    I asked an even amount of:demographic segmentation,quantitativeand qualitative questions (What area are you livingin? What do you know already about the socialrealism genre? Do you find it easy to locate socialrealism films?).I also asked open questions and closed ques tions, forexample: What do you st udy? and Why do you thinkindependent films get less not ice by the mainst reamaudience compared to Hollywood movies?, this leadto prolonged responses which i could then analyse.
