Here are ten practical ways you can get involved: I
I 1. Meet the principal and teachers at the beginning of the school year. Tell them you expect
I your child to do well in school. (esearch shows this simple conversation actually helps kids do better in school).
2. Find out the best way to reach your child's teacher and tell them the best way to reach you (e.g. cell phone/texting/email, phone call).
3. Go to Back-To-School night and events at your child's school. Kids who see their parents at school get better grades.
I 4. Regularly check your child's backpack for notes, and keep track of homework.
5. Create a study space with good lighting and set regular time for homework.
I 6. Help your child with their homework if needed, and always check it when it's done.
7. Read, read, read. Have your child read everyday. lead to them, read with them and make sure your child sees you reading, as well.
8. Provide healthy food for every meal. Skip the sweets and soda-these foods don't help
I kids learn.
9. Make sure your child gets enough sleep. Kids ages one to three need 12 to 14 hours of I sleep a night. Kids three to five need 11 to 13 hours. Kids five to 12 require 10 to 11
I hours. Teens need at least 8 112 hours of sleep every night.
10. Go online to www.GreatSchools.org and get other ideas for helping you help your child be the best that they can be.

Secretary Carson Publishes Blog on Smoke Free Rule
Last week on the HUIDdIe, Secretary Ben Carson published a blog post announcing the implementa-tion deadline of the Smoke-Free Final Rule, laud-ing the rules impact on the health of children and other public housing residents, and the financial benefits the rule will have for PHAs. According to the post:
HUD's smoke-free rule will protect the health of families who live in public housing, visitors to pub-lic housing, and those who work in public hous-ing. This rule will also save significant amounts of money for public housing authorities. Turning over a smoker's unit can cost more than a thousand dol-lars more than a non-smoker's unit because of the additional labor and materials required. By elimi-nating smoking from public housing, the cost of property management and the medical costs for residents will be reduced. The Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention (Ci) estimates our smoke-free policies will save public housing agen-cies $153 million every year in repairs and pre-ventable fires, including $94 million in secondhand smoke-related health care, $43 million in renova-tion of smoking-permitted units, and $16 million in smoking-related fire losses.
HUD is working with federal and private sector partners to assist PHAs in implementing the rule and facilitating access to smoking cessation re-sources for residents who choose to quit.

Listen frequently to radio, TV or NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards for bulletins of a storm's progress. Fuel and service your vehicles. Stock up on batteries, food that will keep, first aid supplies, drinking water and medications. Have cash on hand in case power goes out and ATMs don't work.
Plan to evacuate if you. •
Live on the coastline, and offshore island or near a river or I flood plain. In addition to wind, flooding from storm surge
waves is a major killer. Live in a high-rise. Hurricane winds can knock out electricity to elevators, break windows and more.
When in a Warning area...
Closely monitor radio, TV or NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards for official bulletins. Follow instructions issued by lo-cal officials. Leave immediately if ordered! If evacuating, leave as soon as possible. Stay with friends or relatives, at a low-rise inland motel or a designated public shelter outside the flood zone. Notify neighbors and a family member outside of the warned area of your evacuation plans. Take pets with you if possible, but remember, most public shelters do not allow pets other than those used by the handicapped. Identify pet-Friendly. motels along your evacuation route.
