Coring and Core Analysis:Level 1

Core samples from oil wells are some of the most important and useful reservoir data available. Obtaining and analyzing core is very expensive and it is necessary to de-rive as much information as possible from every core that is taken. This 1-day course covers all aspects of coring, from planning the job, cutting and storing core in the field, to sampling and analyzing the core in the laboratory. After completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

• Plan and execute a coring program • Understand the equipment and per-

sonnel required to obtain core from a given formation successfully with minimal rock alteration due to fluid invasion and improper core handling procedures

• Select sample sites and analysis methodologies to obtain the maxi-mum amount of reservoir data from the core

• Understand the nature of historical core analysis data in well files and how to use it in reservoir studies, in-cluding its strengths and weakness-es

Planning the core job includes consider-ation of:

• Types of outer/inner core barrels used

• Core bits chosen for a given forma-tion

• Core operating parameters including mud systems, rate of penetration, etc.

• Core catchers selected for rock type• Selecting coring and analysis com-

panies depending on the specific requirements for obtaining the core and the type of information needed from it

The discussion of sampling and laboratory analysis includes:

• Sampling methods and how sam-ples are prepared for analysis

• Procedures commonly used for rou-tine analysis and what the results mean

• Core documentation and preserva-tion methods, including core photog-raphy and description

• A brief introduction to special core analysis

7:30-8:00 - Coffee and Introductions8:00-10:00 - Coring equipment10:00-12:00 - Wellsite operations12:00-1:30 - Lunch (provided)1:30 - To CoreLab for tour and lecture on basic core analysis

Who Should Attend: Geologists and engi-neers who use core data and/or plan field coring operations. Familiarity with basic oil-field operations will be helpful.

INSTRUCTOR

This course is presented by Daniel Fargo with PayZone Inc. Dan has extensive ex-perience in all aspects of core operations from the field to laboratory management. He started his career supervising core well drilling and subsequently has worked for 5 major core analysis companies and one coring contractor. He also has wide expe-rience with many formation types in West Coast North American basins, West Africa, the Middle East, and South America with conventional core and both percussion and rotary sidewall cores. Dan has consulted to many large and small oil and gas compa-nies advising them on coring and analysis
