• The Honorable Wade Hampton McCree, Jr.– 1920-1987– Boston, Massachusetts– Fisk University, 1941– Harvard Law School, 1948
Wade H McCree Jr Incentive Program
• The Honorable Wade Hampton McCree, Jr.– After finishing law
school, he moved to Detroit, Michigan (his wife’s hometown), and entered the general practice of law with Harold Bledsoe

• The Honorable Wade Hampton McCree, Jr.– 1953- Appointed to the Workman's
Compensation Commission– 1955-First African-American to be
named a judge of the Circuit Court for Wayne County, Michigan
– 1961-Appointed by President John F. Kennedy to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan
– 1966-Appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit

• The Honorable Wade Hampton McCree Jr.– 1977-Nominated by President Jimmy
Carter as solicitor general of the United States, the second African-American to hold that office
– a law officer appointed primarily to assist an attorney general
– Attorney general - the chief law officer of a nation or state who represents the government in litigation and serves as its principal legal adviser
– 1981- Became Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, a position he held until his death

• Influenced others by his actions and words….
– Rather than worry about obstacles imposed because of discrimination, McCree worked to make equality a reality.
– He taught his three children to be aware of history and race, but not to dwell on it.
– Education was

• The Honorable Wade Hampton McCree, Jr.
– Helped found the Higher Education Opportunity Committee, which identifies worthy students in middle school and provides them with college scholarships.
– The statewide program in Michigan was renamed for him after his death, which is now called the
Wade McCree Jr Incentive Program!!

• SO WHAT’S THE INCENTIVE?– Students who participate in the
Wade H. McCree Jr. Incentive program will receive a $3000 scholarship. This scholarship may be combined with the Early Awareness Scholarship and other Merit Awards.

• SO WHAT’S THE INCENTIVE?
– For Scholarship • Its Renewable up to three consecutive
academic years (eight semesters)• Student must meet the Financial Aid
Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards (GPA)
• Its for the Academic year – fall and winter semesters only (does not include summer)

• Participation Agreement **In High School**
– Enrolls in and satisfactorily passes the following recommended college preparatory courses while in high school
– Four years of English, including composition– Three years of college preparatory mathematics, including two
years of algebra– Three years of science, including two years of laboratory science– Three years of social science– Two years of a single foreign language

These requirements are the responsibility of the student and the parent.
• Participation Agreement **By Senior Year**
– Have a complete application for admission submitted to the Admissions Office by December 31 for the following fall semester.
– A complete application consists of an application for admission, official high school transcripts, results of the ACT test and a $30 application fee or fee waiver form.
– Submits a Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 1st, during the senior year in high school.

These requirements are the responsibility of the student and the parent.

• Addresses and contact information– It is the student’s responsibility to
notify the Wade H. McCree, Jr. Incentive Program coordinator with any changes of contact information (i.e. address, telephone number, etc.) no later than one week after the change has taken place.

• Email– IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
THAT, ALL SCHOLARS AND THEIR PARENT PROVIDE AN EMAIL ADDRESS
– If you do not currently have one, please create or provide one within the next 2 WEEKS**
– Send your email address information to [email protected]
• Participation Agreement **After enrolling at GVSU**
– Submits a Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 1st, every year
– MUST remain in “good academic standing” according to the Grand Valley State University’s academic policy to remain eligible for the Wade H. McCree, Jr. Incentive Award.
– Enrolls for a minimum of 12 college credit hours each – semester (Fall and Winter).
