ArtARTrageous Pen & Ink(Ages 7-12) Bet you never thought you could create a totally unique piece of art with a sopping wet piece of paper! Working with local artist Norm Knott, you will start by drawing a composition with ink onto a wet piece of paper and watch as the ink flows into an organic shape. Get more detailed by using watercolors, ink and collage to fill in your drawing and make it you own. The ambitious might even complete more than one piece!

Fall 2012Community leader Jon Lundin began Rock Valley College Whiz Kids, as a summer enrichment program intended for students with high abilities and high interests in special academic areas. Now, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids continues to provide students in K-8th grade with a variety of academic enrichment opportunities. Through creative teaching strategies, materials, and curricula, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids offers unique, hands-on activities with inventive modes of participation. Rock Valley College Whiz Kids classes are designed to: • Challenge students to learn new material quickly • Explore subjects more intensely than in their current grade-level curriculum • Offer opportunities for students to become acquainted with other students who have similar academic interests • Introduce children to a college environment without the pressure of earning a grade • Provide a supportive environment where students “learn by doing” • Encourage students to apply critical and creative thinking skills to numerous areas of study • Offer a variety of instructional methods to stimulate and challenge students’ interestsStudents have fun using their imaginations, perfecting their talents, and gaining confidence in academic areas. Holiday ChessWhiz Kids presents a special event for the holidays for all you K-8 students who enjoy a chess challenge. holiday Chess is a chess puzzle solving contest with prizes and treats for all who enter. Students will solve a series of chess puzzles (such as mate in one, best move, etc.) earning awards based on how well they score. Music

The Rock Valley Children’s Choir (RVCC),a performing and education choral organization, was established by Leah Baskin and Dean Durst in 2002 as part of the music program offerings for children within the Community Education Division of Rock Valley College.

The RVCC has sung in concert with the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra, Mendelssohn Chorale, Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Rock Valley Master Chorale, and Kantorei, the Singing Boys of Rockford. RVCC has performed at the Coronado Performing Arts Center, toured at regional libraries and museums, sung for the opening of a Smithsonian Institute exhibition, participated in youth choral festivals (including their first week-long festival tour in 2011) and performed for public and private civic groups in the greater Rockford area.

Weekly rehearsals and optional Saturday workshops provide many occasions for students in RVCC to grow both as singers and responsible citizens. Director Leah Baskin brings a variety of learning experiences and styles, including Kodaly, Orff, and High/Scope Movement approach-es, with Linda Smith helping as the RVCC’s accompanist and assistant director. Plus, unique to RVCC are the annual charity-themed fall concerts and spring “Singer’s Songbook” repertoire concerts, in which all singers learn two dozen songs from the great American heritage of songs for inter generational community singing. These activities honor our musical past and support our community’s future.

Do-Re-Mi Singers(Grades 1-3) Activities designed for beginning singers, including correct vocal technique, ear training games, simple note reading and rhythm reading, music games, dancing, and playing simple instruments. This choir performs in two concerts per semester, along with the three older choirs. Science Burpee Home School Workshops & ClassesClasses are for Ages 10 and up: The classes focus on Kingdom Animalia with activities to discover the uniqueness of the different orders and families as well as studying the micro world. Students will learn how to use a microscope and how it works. The Magnificent Microworld Adventure by Activities Integrating Mathematics and Science curriculum produced by the National Science Foundation forms the foundation of the classes. As always, the museum is an integral component of the classes.

Class: Arthropods(Ages 10 and up) Who is an Arthropod? This class explores complete and incomplete metamorphosis with meal worms and cockroaches.

Class: Microscopic Fundamentals(Ages 10 and up) Discover who invented the microscope and how it works. Work with different microscopes.


Class: Cell Structures(Ages 10 and up) Study the parts of cells. Use a microscope to distinguish plant and animal cells.


Class: Protozoa(Ages 10 and up) Explore the complex and diverse world of single cell creatures.


Class: Moving in on Protozoa(Ages 10 and up) Students will observe their various methods of moving.


Class: Life in Glass Houses(Ages 10 and up) Students will observe the changes that occur in a closed protozoan community.


Workshops are for ages 6-9Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Students will observe and work with various invertebrates including pertinent animals from the permanent collection. These Life Science workshops cover the study of food chains, biomes, and adaptations based on an Activities Integrating Mathematics and Science curriculum produced by the National Science Foundation.

Workshop: Kingdom Animalia(Ages 6-9) Students will explore how scientists classify animals, including using the permanent collection.


Workshop: Popping through the Garden(Ages 6-9) Explore the difference between spiders and insects and create your own examples.


Workshop: Missing Moths(Ages 6-9) Explore camouflage by studying moths in depth. Students will graph results of their investigations.


Workshop: Table Manners(Ages 6-9) Learn about arthropod mouth parts. Examine specimens from the museum’s permanent collection and complete a project to take home.


Workshop: Isopods - Hot Foot, Cold Foot(Ages 6-9) Isopods are crustaceans that live on land and breathe through gills. Study their reactions to physical stimuli in this class.


Workshop: Fishful Thinking(Ages 6-9) By observing a goldfish; vertebrates will be studied. Students will examine fish in the permanent collection.


Workshop: Fishing for Fins(Ages 6-9) Students construct a goldfish model to study fish anatomy, how fish swim and breathe under water.

BASKIN, LEAH who has dedicated herself to providing music education for children for over 35 years, received music education at Augustana College and elementary education at Western Illinois Univer-sity. She has worked as a music teacher at several Rockford Public Schools, Montessori Private Academy and Keith School. She served for 10 years on the Illinois Music Educators Association State Board and founded the IMEA Children’s Music Festival for northern Illinois. She and Dean Durst cofounded the Rock Valley Children’s Choir in 2002.

BURPEE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY began as a Works Progress Administration project of the 1930’s. Burpee is a natural history museum specializing in paleontology, geology, biology and Native American life.

CARDENAS JR , ARTHUR started playing the drums at age 4. He joined the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps in 1978, and by age 13 he was invited by Marty Hurley to join the big corps Phantom Regiment. This accomplishment is noted by Art being the youngest snare drummer in a corps in the entire USA. At age 14, Art was playing with the Los Primos Cardenas Orchestra and toured the Midwest playing Tejano/Chicano style music. Most recently, he established Art’s School for Drumming and Music, where he leads private lessons and drum camps. www.aschoolfordrumming.com.

ELITE DEFENSE SYSTEMS (EDS) was founded by Matthew J. Numrich. Mr. Numrich is certified as one of only a handful of full Instructor of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) and the Filipino Martial Arts by Sifu Paul Vunak (under Guru Dan Inosanto). The Elite Defense environment is for learning and workout, where you are proud to bring your family,

friends, co-workers, customers, clients, and acquaintances. Through its many services, EDS has specialty instructors for different groups of students, including law enforcement organizations, security companies, young adults, children with learning disabilities (ADD/ADHD), and family members seeking proactive home/environment safety.

FATHEAD FILMS began with two cousins captured by the magic and passion of movies. Keith and Justin Romine began writing and producing films as teenagers and now collaborate talent, creativity, and passion into Fathead Films. Both hold BA degrees in Film from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where they studied under some great names in film and television including, Academy Award nominated actor Tony Curtis, writer Sean Clark, and film director David Schmoeller. They currently produce short films and a feature film.

HA’S TAE KWON DO AND KUM DO STUDIO helps students gain wisdom and health through individualized martial arts classes. Master Ha is highly recognized for his continued contributions in martial arts and carries a strong set of credentials. He has taught martial arts for many years and has been recently awarded with the USA Presidential Physical Fitness Award for his outstanding contribution to the world of Taekwondo (2009).

JUNG’S TAE KWON DO ACADEMY strives to teach good form, which leads to good discipline and provides parents and children with a great bonding opportunity. Master Jung was born and raised in Korea, coming to the USA in 1978, and holds a WTF coaching license from USA Taekwondo.

LANGSHOLT, INGER is a well-respected private instruction piano teacher, instrumental in developing community piano lessons in a group setting at Rock Valley College. Inger’s teaching style and classes are best described by one of her adult students: “She taught me (to play the piano) as a child. This is an easy, laid-back approach for the beginner. The student enjoys it!”

LYON, KATHY has been teaching for Community Education since 1985. Kathy earned her Master of Fine Arts degree and is nearing completion of her Masters in Teaching. Since 1991 she has been a teacher within the Rockford Public Schools.

MENDELSSOHN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (MPAC) is the oldest continuous community music organization of its kind in the United States.
