A generation of kids grew up on LeVar Burton’s educationalPBS show Reading Rainbow, which aired from 1983 to 2006.Now he has an app for that, and the current Perception staraims to bring his and other authors’ work to children withiPads. “There’s been a precipitous decline in children’sliteracy in the past decade,” says Burton, 55. “No Child LeftBehind is doing exactly that: leaving our children behind, and that is not OK.” . . . “There’s definitely sex and there’s

definitely romance, there is no red roomof pain, there’s not even a hot-pink roomof mild discomfort,” says chick-lit authorJennifer Weiner in comparing her latestbook, The Next Best Thing, with the popularFifty Shades of Grey. Weiner, 42, relishes thefreedom that life as a novelist has givenher. “When you’ve got little kids [herdaughters are 4½ and 9], it’s nice to be athome with your little desk in the closet.”

AUGUST CAN BE dis-couraging for anygardener: Leaves

look brown, flowers pro-duce fewer buds, and del-icate plants wilt in the heat.Rather than throw in thetrowel, revitalize your gar-den, suggests Burpee SeedCo. CEO and Chairman

Be sure to water in themorning, when roots aredriest; resist the urge todouse plants throughoutthe day. “It’s better to un-derwater than overwater, because the roots willdrown,” Ball says. “If theplant looks hungry or thir-sty, it’ll droop just a littlebit. That’s when you wantto soak it.”

Think green. It’s nottoo late to add fast-growingveggies to the patch. Ball’ssuggestion: “Concentrateon your leafy greens, likecollard greens, mustardgreens and salad greens.”

Spinach and leaf lettucetake only 30 days to matureand can be planted as lateas September.

Have fun. Why notshow off the fruits of yourlabor with a party in thebackyard, with your cropsas refreshments? Ball rec-ommends “garden-gating,”a homey, family-friendlyversion of tailgating. “Youcan use freshly picked veg-etables and grill them withbrats and beer and watchthe big game on an outdoorTV.” How about garden-gating for the Olympics? 6

— Joanna Hlavacek

George Ball. Here aresome tips from the third-generation seedsman:

Just add water. In latesummer and fall, humiditydeclines, causing soil mois-ture to evaporate quicker.Creating a watering sched-ule and sticking to it ismore important than ever. FI

IF YOU’VE MASTERED the artof waiting until the 11th hourto complete the task at hand,

you may be more productive thanyou think. A new study finds thatpeople who take a break from anintellectual task to do some mind-less activity, then return to it, per-form about 41% better after thebreak than those who never deviate.

Delayers get a bad rap in ourculture, something that John Perry, professor emeritus of philosophy atStanford University and author ofThe Art of Procrastination, wouldlike to change. “For the most part, procrastinators actually get a lotdone,” he says.

Perry points out that on a dead-line, procrastinators become mas-ters of file-organizing. Although theters of file-organizing. Although theters of file-organizing. Although the

The morethings a procrasti-nator has to do, themore productive he’ll be.”

A procrastinator’s biggest vice:the computer. Unplug your laptopbefore using it, which initiates anautomatic shutdown time.

Expect a similar wave of emotion when Spar-kle, one of this summer’s most anticipatedmovies, opens Aug. 17. What was to be a

comeback — this was Houston’s first film since1996’s The Preacher’s Wife — now representsa final chapter in her rocky, remarkable life.

“This is the best performance of her career, and she knew it,” Chase says. “The irony is,she was really comfortable in her skin in a waythat I hadn’t seen in a long time. She was like,‘This is who I am. My life’s been complicated, but I’m happy.’ ”

In February came the startlingnews that she had died at age 48 ina Los Angeles hotel room of whateventually wasdetermined tobe an acciden-tal drowning, with heart dis-ease and co-caine use ascontributingfactors. The media presented aportrait of a troubled diva battlingpersonal demons: Her last dayswere illustrated by snapshots of asweaty, disheveled Houston leav-ing a pre-Grammys party.

Chase says the movie will leavefans with another image — that ofa gifted, focused star starring in,and executive-producing, a laborof love. “People will look at her —beautiful, healthy, joyous — andthink of Sparkle first, before theythink about the pictures of hercoming out of the nightclubs.”

A few months before her death,Houston spent about six weeksfilming in Detroit. American Idolwinner Jordin Sparks, who playsthe lead role of Sparkle, describesher as a caring, maternal force.

“Every morning, she wouldwalk into the hair and makeuptrailer, and she would open thedoor and she’d go, ‘How are mybabies today? God is good. Youguys doing OK?’ ” says Sparks, who’s making her film debut. “Shewas always just so encouraging. She was so full of joy and so full oflight, because this was her baby. She’d been working on this movieand getting it out for, I think,10-plus years.”

Unafraid of the pastHouston grew up in New Jer-

sey watching the 1976 originalversion of Sparkle that brokeHollywood barriers with its storyabout the hopes and struggles of asinging sister group made up ofbeautiful young women of color.

At a small gathering with re-porters at a Detroit church in No-vember, a regal and relaxedHouston described how Sparkleinspired her: “I would go everySaturday, for, like four monthsstraight, and I would watch thematinee to the evening show.”

When she and Chase becameproducing partners, Houston sug-gested updating the music-ladendrama that meant so much to her.In 2001, their plans to have singer/actress Aaliyah play the title rolewere tragically halted by herdeath in a plane crash.

It would be nothing for us tobe sitting around and she wouldbreak out into a hymn,” saysDetroit singer Beth Griffith, who was Houston’s stand-in andwho bonded with the star oversharing a birthday.

IF YOU HAVE DRAWERS overflowing with photographs, images cluttering your computer’s desktop and randompictures stored on your smartphone, getting control of

your precious memories — or simply locating them — canseem like mission impossible. Try this step-by-step plan toget organized and save time searching for pics:

Start a routine.“To keep organizing photosfrom becoming an over-whelming project, set aside15 minutes a month to graball of your devices andsweep pictures onto yourcomputer,” says Melissa Lin,director of merchandising atMixbook, an online photo-book site. Other options foruploading images includeSmugMug, Picasa or Flickr.

Weed out bloopers. To save time sorting through photographs later on,immediately delete or toss blurry or unflatteringor duplicate shots, Lin says.

File vs. frame.Sort and then file prints instorage boxes to keepeverything neat, says NanPritchard, a buyer at Expo-sures, a company specializ-ing in picture-organizingproducts. “Display anyphotos you want to leafthrough or that could beconversation-starters inacid-free albums or frames.”

Choose your album.A three-ring album withremovable pages allowsfor the greatest flexibility;double-weight pages lastlonger for frequently usedalbums, Pritchard says.“Memo albums—withspace for jotting captions— cover personalization, and spine patchesidentify what’s inside.”

Group and label.Photos will be pre-orga-nized if you upload month-ly, “but creating folders iskey for finding them fast,”Lin says. It is helpful tolabel each folder by event, such as Florida 2010, andthen create subfolders, such as Miami and Orlando.Same holds true for prints.Group photos into separatestorage boxes using tabdividers for subfolders.

Store safely.Avoid storing print photosin basements or attics,Pritchard says. “CDs andDVDs offer a compact wayto store and back up yourdigital photo files, andcorrosion-protectionpocket pages can expandthe longevity of your discsfrom 40 to 120 years,” shesays. Companies such asiMemories can convertphotos into discs. 6

formed His Eye Is on the Spar-row clad in a flowing gown. “Shesang that song so beautifully, itwas as if we were in a churchservice,” Griffith says. “It wasno longer acting.”

Says director Salim Akil:“Knowing when to hit the highnote and when to restrain one’sself is very important in life, andI think that’s what she embod-ied. If you go back and youlisten to her music or watchsome of her performances, whatyou will notice is an eleganceand a beauty to the restraint.”

Houston was proud of beingon time to work, says friendBeBe Winans, author of thenew book The Whitney I Knew.Via e-mail, he notes: “Whitneycalled me as soon as she landedin Detroit, seeing [as] some ofmy family still lives there, andshe asked for my brother Pas-tor Marvin Winans’ number soshe could attend his church.” Ina paparazzi-free haven, Hous-ton joined the cast one night at ajazz club and wore pearls to aDetroit Lions football game.

As Sparkle’s opening nears, colleagues are excited and sor-rowful. “Since this was some-thing she was so passionateabout,” Sparks says, “we wantto represent her and celebrateher and represent this movie inthe best way we possibly can.”

Griffith recorded the broad-cast of Houston’s funeral buthasn’t felt ready to watch it.“After I heard she died, it mademe want to work harder andbetter,” she says. “I really feellike she gave me a part of her.”

And now, with Sparkle,Houston will give all of her fansone last gift. 6

I am no medical expert. Far fromit. Just a regular, busy Mom of fourwho was miserable for many yearswith awful, painful stomach issues.Sometimes, I would eat and feel likeI was lit on fire. I would start choking,I couldn’t swallow properly, I’d breakinto a cold sweat and then vomit. Atthose times, I thought that I wouldnever be able to enjoy a meal again.

Last year I broke my wrist,I‘m not an old person, I’m 56 andthought I was in decent shape. MyMom, who is in assisted living, alsorecently suffered from a broken hip. Iam still paying the medical bills fromall of it. I thought our family was justprone to these fractures until I readan article that stopped me dead inmy tracks. It talked about a recentFDA warning that said if you takecertain antacids like Prilosec®,Nexium®, Prevacid®, Dexilant®,Zegerid®, Protonix®, Aciphex®,Vimovo®, Prilosec OTC®, ZegeridOTC®, and Prevacid 24HR® thatthere was an increased risk ofhip, bone and spinal fractures.†It also said that these medicationswere not meant to be taken for morethan one year for prescription, andfor over-the-counter versions (OTC),no more than three 14 continuousday treatments per year unlessinstructed by a physician.† I almostfainted when I read this because myMom and I both had been takingthem daily for years, but I nowunderstand about what might havehappened to us and can’t tell youhow upset and victimized I now feel.

I went to my Doctor to find outmore. He explained to me thatmassive studies showed these

antacids caused side effectsincluding fractures, seizures, bacterial infections, and muchmore to those taking them, thatusers must be warned. We aretalking about drugs that you hearadvertised every day all over TV.

He also explained that they shutdown the production of stomachacid, which our bodies needto absorb nutrition and controlharmful bacteria. I asked if therewas anything else that I could trywithout the negative side effects. He told me that I might not need adrug at all!

A better alternative is an all naturalsolution that promotes healthydigestion called AloeCure®, whichactually uses pure Aloe Vera tobalance stomach acid and has noknown side effects.

I wondered how somethingnatural could be strong andpowerful, but I was desperate, soI hoped and prayed this was theanswer.

I also discovered that thereare tales in the Bible of a healingAloe Vera plant. And that gaveme comfort, as I believe that themiraculous powers of naturalsubstances can be even morepowerful than some of thesechemicals.

I also gave some to my Mom whois thrilled with the results. I wanted toshare my story with other people, sothey can experience the relief that Ihave and not have to suffer the waymy Mom and I did. So if you don’tbelieve me, just try AloeCure® foryourself. It is truly a miracle.

W ITH ALL THE colorful, just-picked pro-duce available in the summer, it’s hardnot to be inspired to whip up a salad.

Nature has already done most of the work byproviding a garden of glorious, healthy ingredi-ents. All you need to do is pull them together anddrizzle with a dressing that allows them to shine.

All too often, though, the dressing we choosedoes more damage than good, drowning freshproduce in artificial ingredients and unhealthyfats, and adding hundreds of calories. But mak-ing tasty, low-cal dressings couldn’t be easier.

Here are three for you to try.The first is a classic

creamy ranch madelighter by subbing muchof the mayo with Greekyogurt. It’s so rich andflavorful you will nevermiss the extra fat andcalories. It begs to beused as a dip for cut

veggies or to dress a crisp green salad. Then there is a subtly sweet balsamic vinai-

grette lightened with orange juice. The juicereplaces about half the oil in the traditionalrecipe and brings a citrusy punch.

Finally, there’s a dressing that uses nutrient-and fiber-rich avocado as its base, which lends ita stunning pale green color and a decadent, buttery taste. Spiked with tangy buttermilk, lemon and herbs, it offers a gentle yet brightflavor to any salad or a simple sliced ripe tomato.

DRESSED FOR SUCCESSA trio of tempting toppers that’llgive summer salads a flavor boost.

The trick is towear a Mad Men shift with a shoethat’s popular now, like a fun sum-mer wedge rather than a vintageheel. “The beauty of vintage wornwell is that it can make you lookmodern as well as distinctive,”Silver says.Buy by body type: One of

the most striking differ-ences between vintageand current clothes is fit.“There’s no doubt thatpeople were smaller-boned, weighed lessand were even short-er,” Silver notes. Cer-tain decades work best

for certain figures. Women withslim hips can wear the flapperdresses of the ’20s. If you arenarrow-shouldered, Silver sug-gests you opt for the extra heft of’40s shoulder pads. Curvy figureswill be flattered by ’50s fashion, and small-chested women cantake advantage of the slinky topsand halters that ruled the ’70s.Safeguard your closet: A

great vintage find can enhanceyour wardrobe — as long as itdoesn’t bring any moths alongwith it. Silver suggests that when-ever you buy a new item, partic-ularly wool and cashmere, putyour sweater in the freezer for afew hours. This will kill moths andother fabric-munching insectsthat may have hitched a ride.Afterward, hand-wash the item ina gentle laundry detergent. Silverprefers all-natural detergentsfrom a store that specializes inorganic products, such as WholeFoods.Bring

cash: Inthe worldof vintage, the populareras maychange, Silversays, but thereis one con-stant: “Cash isking.” 6

mer is the ideal time to hunt forone-of-a-kind retro finds. “Out-door flea markets are incrediblydemocratic when it comes to find-ing vintage pieces. It doesn’t mat-ter where you live — you neverknow what you are going to find,”says Cameron Silver, author ofDecades and founder of the re-nowned vintage-clothing store in

Los Angeles of the same name. But before you start hagglingover a Pucci jumpsuit, we askedSilver to share some vintage-shopping secrets to help take themystery (and the moths) out ofbuying a dress old enough to beyour mother.Accessorize on the cheap:

For shoppers who are new to buy-ing old clothes, Cameron suggestsyou start with inexpensive acces-sories. “If you get a fun beadednecklace for $3.99, chances areyou won’t regret it if you neverend up wearing it,” Silver says.
