I am happy to report that the great finds continue. In this issue I will detail another discovery that makes a connection that has eluded us since 1970. Again this link is the result of finding a Will and this makes six major connections we have made in the past two years using Wills. In this case the connection is for a Yorkshire Whitelock family so the majority of the articles for this issue relate to Yorkshire Whitelocks. This latest find is thanks to the huge amount of Yorkshire research under taken by Jennifer Oswald-Sealy, a name I have seen from time to time while researching but have only recently made contact. Our thanks to Jennifer for both her excellent research and for her willingness to share this trove of Yorkshire Whitelock information with us. Most of this research relates to the WHITLOCK21 & WHITLOCK12 families and results in fairly major updates to both these charts. The collection of Will transcriptions sent in by Jennifer Oswald-Sealy are listed in references (R3747-R3758). In the classes I teach, I encourage all researchers to mine the information collections relating to the collateral families that, while not Whitlock, are related to the Whitlocks in some way. They or their children married Whitlocks or they lived next door or a portion of their life ran parallel with a Whitlock family. They may have emigrated together from the same town in Europe or moved West with the Whitlock family. A great example of this is the subject of an article in this issue - John Holland Jenkins - Family Bible. In this case he married a Whitlock and while the Bible details their Jenkins descendants it also provides unknown information about his father-in-law, Thomas Whitlock. I managed to spend some time working on Lawrence Otis’ January 2014 disc of research so you will see his name a lot on the lists in this issue. As in the past I have not printed the Reference items that are census extracts and therefore most of the missing numbers are also items from Lawrence. I am currently working on the 1871 census for Northamptonshire. This is a huge Whitlock area and the census records are very extensive. I have not catalogued all the 1851 and 1861 entries yet but the references are listed in the census files and images are in our Website files. Alan Whitlock sent in disks of the Bristol Diocese Baptismal Registers 1754-1837 which provided documentation for his line. This family traces back to the 1500's and has not yet been entered into the computer as a chart. So far no other lines have been shown to connect with this family. (X7614) Rebecca Olenchak provided some very interesting research on the Massey & Bryant descendants of William & Susannah (Bartlett) Massey. Susannah Bartlett (1787-1830) was the daughter of James & Temperence (Whitlock) Bartlett of Halifax Co., Virginia. (X7618) I was reminded by Mandane Ennis what a great site Find A Grave is. I worked my way through all the Whitlocks buried in the Harriman Cemetery, Walnut Hill, Roane Co., Tennessee and filled a great many blanks in the WHITLOCK68 family. (PH1713-PH1725) I was sorry to receive the very short obit from Greg Whitlock advising that the lady that was likely our oldest Whitlock died November 4, 2014 in Shawsville, Virginia. Blake (Hall) Whitlock was 105. There was a very detailed biography of her and her husband Dennis Whitlock done in 2002 on their 73 rd wedding anniversary (see X5934). Jamie Kyte Sapoch contacted me regarding her ancestor John Augustus Mathison (1781-1868) the husband of Harriet the daughter of Peter & Anna (Whitlock) Vanderburgh. John Augustus Mathison’s daughter Ann Eliza Amelia Mathison married her great uncle, Anna Whitlock’s brother William Coley Whitlock (1787- 1875) and was the person whose land became the Whitlock Golf Course in Hudson Quebec. Amazingly Jamie has portraits of John Augustus Mathison and his daughter the artist Harriet Augusta (Mathison) Hempsted hanging in her dining room. All those years of collecting and sharing research have yielded great results and in the past two years wehave discovered missing links Whitlock researchers have been hunting for over 30 to 40 years. I am happyto report that the great finds continue. In this issue I will detail another discovery that makes a connectionthat has eluded us since 1970. Again this link is the result of finding a Will and this makes six majorconnections we have made in the past two years using Wills. In this case the connection is for a YorkshireWhitelock family so the majority of the articles for this issue relate to Yorkshire Whitelocks.

This latest find is thanks to the huge amount of Yorkshire research under taken by Jennifer Oswald-Sealy, aname I have seen from time to time while researching but have only recently made contact. Our thanks toJennifer for both her excellent research and for her willingness to share this trove of Yorkshire Whitelockinformation with us. My apology for the error in the last Newsletter - Main Line 442 was for William Dennis Lindsey (notWhitlock) and in a double error this Main Line was also 436 which had been included with the March issue.I did also notice the June 2013 issue only says June on page 1 - the rest of the pages say March! I proof readevery issue three times but still miss the occasional error.

Unfortunately I was too busy this year to make my annual research trip to Salt Lake City. As the research Ihave been able to do during that week has directly resulted is some the major connections we have made inthe past two years, I hope to be able to return in the Fall of 2015.

Enclosed or attached to this issue of the Newsletter are the renewal form and our statement for 2014. Wehad 78 subscribers this year which is roughly where we have been holding for some years. As usualdonations brought in more revenue than subscriptions and I appreciate everyone’s generosity and support tokeep this Whitlock One-Name study viable. I am still paying off the debt I incurred when I set up theWebsite but based on the steady stream of people finding the Website for the first time and as a resultwishing to share and add to it, I think the debt was worth it. I already have 12 subscriptions for 2015/16 andappreciate that very much as well. My hope is you will continue that support and renew your subscriptionfor 2015. For those of you who wish to pay on-line the “Donate” button on the Website works well for thispurpose. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Newsletter and all the best of the Holiday Season to you all.

This Will was transcribed by Jennifer Oswald-Sealy of Australia and is one of several Yorkshire Wills thatJennifer has shared with us. I was particularly interested to see this one as the Peter Whitelock shown as theeldest son of Francis Whitelock headed a long researched family shown at the end of the WHITLOCK12chart as “Also from Yorkshire”. This Peter Whitelock was born about 1764 and died at Downholme,Yorkshire October 1, 1828. The first reference to this family was sent to me in 1970 by Professor DorothyWhitelock of Cambridge, England. Professor Whitelock’s rough chart of her family [X0075] showed thatshe knew her grandfather was Peter Whitelock and he had a brother Francis and that their ancestors wereFrancis & Peter Whitelock. This Peter Whitelock who was the father of Professor Whitelock’s grandfatherwas the one born about 1764. His father Francis Whitelock was born in 1736. While Professor Whitelockactually had the last two ancestors reversed, the chart she sent me in 1970 traced back this far and remainedthe limit of our knowledge on this family until this Will was sent in by Jennifer. The family now is extendedback several more generations and shows the strong connection between the Ellerton and Whitelockfamilies. Francis Whitelock b.1736 married Elizabeth Ellerton in 1761. His parents were ChristopherWhitelock and Catherine Ellerton married 1729. Christopher’s parents were Christopher Whitelock &Elizabeth Harland married 1700. (His first wife was Ann Ellerton married 1697 and two of his sisters alsomarried Ellertons). The last Christopher was the son of George Whitelock who was likely born in the1630's.

It wasn’t until 2012 when Vicky House discovered the photographs of the Whitelock graves at Downholmeon www.dalesgenealogy.com that we got the estimated birthdate of 1764 for Peter Whitelock. For somereason we have not been able to find a record of Peter Whitelock’s birth. We have his parents, FrancisWhitelock & Elizabeth Ellerton married at Downholme in 1761 and the birth of several children 1762 to1773 but we did not know Peter Whitelock was their son until we received Francis Whitelock’s will wherehe is shown as his eldest son. With this Will everything else fell into place confirming the informationcontained on the family tree done by Professor Dorothy Whitelock in 1970.

This is the sixth incidence in the past two years of us solving a 30 to 40 year mystery using a Will. Thepooling of Whitlock research collected over the past 48 years is yielding amazing results!!

DOROTHY ELLEN WHITELOCK (1901-1982) -HISTORIANStarting in 1968 I wrote to Whit(e)lock(e)s all over the world using addresses I extracted from telephonedirectories that were available at the library. In 1970 one of the persons who responded was ProfessorDorothy Whitelock of Cambridge, England. At the time I was living just north of London in Ware,Hertfordshire. The responses to these hundreds of letters were to form what has become known as a “OneName Study”.

Professor Whitelock had retired in 1969 and her first letter was dated Nov.1,1970. She wrote about thenumerous letters she received following the publication of her first edition of The Beginnings of EnglishSociety in 1952. Persons with the name Whitelock wrote from as far away as America suggesting arelationship with her family. Her comments to me were that my sister and I had taken on a big task as the

name was not as uncommon as one might think. There was a summary of where each of her brothers andsister’s families lived and could be contacted, as well as her two nephews, Philip and Peter. Also enclosedwas a rough chart showing her ancestors back to the early 1700's in Yorkshire.

Using the information Professor Dorothy had provided I went in search of more information, starting withher career. Various Who’s Who publications provided details and more recently Wikipedia.

I knew her mother Emmeline Dawson was the second wife of Edward Whitelock of Leeds, Yorkshire. Therewas a half sister Clara Helen Wade Whitelock the daughter of Edward’s first wife, Emmeline’s sister ClaraDawson. Dorothy was born in Leeds November 11, 1901. Despite her father’s untimely death in 1903 sheattended and was an excellent student at Leeds Girl’s High School. At 20 she was able to attend NewnhamCollege in Cambridge where she also excelled and did postgraduate work at Newnham from 1924-26. Therefollowed Cambridge University Scandinavian Student at Uppsala in Sweden 1927-29 and the AllenScholarship at Cambridge 1929-30, the first woman to hold this position.

In 1930 her work on nine Anglo-Saxon wills resulted in her first book being published and she began a longassociation with Oxford University where she held several positions before returning to Cambridge in 1957as the Elrington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon.

As with many female members high in their professions, Dorothy was frustrated by the male-control ofacademic advancement. Numerous career moves and professorships eluded her and she confided to some ofher friends that she was considering leaving the study of Anglo-Saxon history. She was persuaded tocontinue and in 1959 finally achieved one of her goals, that of granting Oxford’s women’s colleges the samestatus as the mens.

Dorothy’s work on Anglo-Saxon history continued into the 1960's and even today the majority of her work isstill quoted as having had the greatest impact ever on Anglo-Saxon studies. Her scholarship is still the goldstandard in her field and the measure students use to compare their work. Dorothy died August 14, 1982 age81.

At the end of this transcription Jennifer notes: “His other brother Christopher was still alive at the time ofmaking this will but was buried 25th March 1778. Their brother Peter had predeceased George andChristopher. All three died of an “inflamed sore throat” according to the Downholme parish register.”

“From the website of Keighley and District Family History Society's Epidemics Timeline written by DavidFeather it mentions the "sore throat" disease. It was evidently similar to scarlatina or scarlet fever of whichthere were epidemics in 1778 and 1788.”

It is unusual for such detail to be provided in the burial registers but in this case there are several extracomments included and this is a very good example of why genealogists should always try to see the originalsource document.

The Downholme, Yorkshire, Register for the Year 1778 shows the following:

Janu’ry 29 Peter Whitelock of Thorp BuriedFeb’ry 7th George Whitelock of Brunton upon Swale Buried. These two were brothers and sons to ChrWhitelock of DowFeb’ry 26 An daughter of the above George Whitelock BuriedMarch 25 Christopher Whitelock the younger of Downholme Buried he was the Brother to the twoWhitelocks above they all three died of a short sickness supposed an inflamed sore throat.Aprill 30th Sarah a child of Widow Whitelocks of Thorp Buried

Between January and March 1778 three sons and two grandchildren of Christopher Whitelock (1705-1783)and his wife Catherine Ellerton (1708-1781) died, likely of scarlet fever. Jennifer makes the comment:“These must have been hard times in the Dales.”

Our thanks to Jennifer Oswald-Sealy for sharing her considerable research into the Downholme Whitelockfamilies.

JOHN HOLLAND JENKINS - FAMILY BIBLEEvery genealogist dreams of receiving a letter or email that starts: “I live in my grandparent’s old home. Ihave run across an old Bible that appears to belong to my grandmother’s uncle’s family.” This was the firstline of an email from Debbie Mangen. Debbie descends from James Clark whose brother William wasmarried to Catherine ElizabethJenkins, the daughter of John HollandJenkins. The Family Bible Debbiefound belonged to John HollandJenkins.

John Holland Jenkins was bornJanuary 7, 1815 in Jacksonville,Kentucky. He died November 25,1898. He was married to SilveyWhitlock January 4, 1837 Green Co.,Missouri, U.S.A. [shows 1838]Silvey Whitlock was born March 16,1817 in North Carolina, the daughterof Thomas Whitlock & MaryPonsonbay.

The slips of paper tucked into thefamily Bible detail the family descentfrom both the Whitlock and Jenkinsfamilies and include the birth dates forboth the Whitlock and Jenkinsgrandparents. The descent thenfollows the Jenkins family. Thisfamily is detailed on ourWHITLOCK87 chart withconnections to the WHITLOCK25 &WHITLOCK02H charts.

Shown in this record is the birth dateof April 15, 1773 for ThomasWhitlock and several dates for theJenkins family that were not in ourfiles. Ponsonbay is spelled Pulcebybut the dates match for MaryPonsonbay.

Our sincere thanks to Debbie Mangenfor taking the time to find theWhitlock Family Association websiteand contact us to share thisinformation.

JOHN AUGUSTUS MATHISONSoldier: born London, England Dec.25,1781Married Harriet daughter of Peter & Anna (Whitlock)Vanderburgh Jul.1,1822 Saint-André-Est, Vaudreuil,Lower Canada (Quebec) died Nov.5,1868 Hudson,Quebec.

Served in the Peninsular Wars and retired in 1817.Came to Canada about 1820 and settled in the seigneuryof Vaudreuil at Point-à-Cavagnal (Hudson). Mathisonwas well educated and wealthy compared to hisneighbours. In 1826 he was appointed as a justice ofthe peace and was well respected in the community.

Mathison could get things done and in 1829 he set up aschool to teach children of poorer families. He helpedestablish an Anglican church in 1832. He served in theMilitia, major (1831) and lieutenant-colonel (1846)

He played a fairly major role during the rebellion of1837. His organization skills and calming influenceguided the community through a very divisive time. InNovember 1837, using his experience of war he set up asafe location in the forest for the women and children ofthe community, keeping them away from any possiblebattle site. He organized the men and while an assaultdid not happen, Mathison was put in charge of forminga local militia.

Mathison’s actions were not appreciated by all membersof the community and in 1838 William Whitlock calledhim a “a petty tryant” and was jailed until he cooleddown. William’s wife Matilda petitioned Mathison forher husband’s release. It was a small community andWilliam Whitlock was his wife’s uncle and in 1866 hebecame Mathison’s son-in-law when he married hisdaughter Ann Eliza Amelia Mathison.

Mathison was an autocratic Tory and not a fan ofdemocracy. He ran for election several times duringmore peaceful times and was not successful. In 1849Mathison was president of the local branch of the BritishAmerican League. Among their goals was the return ofpreferential treat in the British world markets for theBritish America provinces or negotiated access to worldmarkets including the United States. Another goal wasthe drafting of a constitution to enable the provinces ofCanada to join in political union for the benefit of allconcerned. This was not achieved until 1867.
