QuaDROPheNiaWhen (6.30pm sea front scooter run) Doors open 7.30pm for film screeningWhere The Trojan Rooms, South Parade, Whitley Bay, NE26 2RGTicket info £5 (available online at www.whitleybayfilmfestival.co.uk and The Avalon Bar (after 6.00pm)Certificate 18Scooter enthusiasts see the festival in with a ‘scooter’ run along the sea front before a Trojan Rooms screening of the mod classic film Quadrophenia. In 1973 Pete Townshend penned a dark and brooding rock opera, more difficult and inaccessible than anything The Who had done before. An esoteric story of an angst ridden Mod called Jimmy. Most older Who fans were utterly confused by this departure from the norm, and after poorly received live performances the band eventually wrote it off as a failure. However the album slowly began to gather a cult following with a whole new, younger generation, and though it may not have worked as a live “rock opera” the hard hitting 1976 film, by first time director Franc Roddam, quite literally changed the world. With a stellar performance by Phil Daniels, the story set in London and Brighton re- tells Townshend’s tale of a young Mod‘s struggle to come to terms with life amidst a haze of drug-fuelled paranoia. The film kick-starts the Whitley Bay Film Festival, with a head turning scooter rally through the town and typically along the sea front, that may provoke a few nervous glances, but, be rest assured it’s all in celebration of this master piece of cinematic history. The film itself will be shown at The Trojan Rooms, amidst an array of polished chrome and wing mirrors… It’s a way of life!Dress code ”Sharp”

When Doors open 7.30pm Where The Trojan Rooms, South Parade, Whitley Bay, NE26 2RG Ticket info £7 Certificate 15During the ’70s, Strange Fruit was an internationally famous band. But, as with

many rock groups, drugs and internal friction took their toll, and the musicians went their separate ways. More than two decades later (Jimmy Nail) is working as a roof repairman. Tony (Stephen Rea) is a condom salesman. Beano (Timothy Spall) toils at a nursery while dodging the tax man. And Ray (Bill Nighy) has been pursuing an unsuccessful solo career.Seeing the ’90s return of such bands as The Eagles and Traffic, Tony decides that there might be some money in reuniting Strange Fruit. Visions of a second chance dance in his head. So, aided by the band’s former secretary, Karen (Juliet Aubrey), and roadie, Hughie (Billy Connolly), they re-form and begin a tour of pubs and grunge dance clubs throughout Holland.Still Crazy will be introduced by music historian, Chris Phipps.

Primate Productions Ltd is a not for profit film production company. Founded in 2007 by a group of people who love making films, it was set up as a workers’ cooperative. Primate’s main objective is not profit, but rather to do what we enjoy most – making and screening creative and innovative films to the highest possible standards. Primate Productions is a social enterprise. We focus mainly on community projects, providing film making workshops to young people, producing short dramas, documentary and promotional films for organisations and businesses in the area. We also provide our time in kind to organise the Whitley Bay Film Festival. We do this because we love film and we love our town!

We would like to thank everyone who has supported and made the festival possible including: Festival organisers: Lucy Harland, ema Lea, Tracey Tofield Festival Steering Group: Barry Bell, Cathy Sharp, Dave Harland, emma norris, Karen goldfinch, Mick Farwell, Paul Irwin, Simon Fitzpatrick Contact: For more information about the Festival or ways to get involved, please contact us by email at [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you!
