More than 2,000 tractor enthusiasts and their families gathered at Jim Butler’s farm in Rowde near Devizes on Bank Holiday Monday, 1 May, for an event marking the centenary of the Fordson tractor, as well as celebrating Ford and New Holland tractors from the last 100 years. Almost 150 tractors from all eras took part in the event, including an original 1917 Fordson Model F brought along by joint organiser T H WHITE. Many of the tractors proved that they could still work the ground in a series of demonstrations and the day succeeded in raising £8,000 for four highly deserving bodies – Dorothy House, Julia’s House Children’s Hospices, The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and Devizes Young Farmers. 100 years ago, at the height of the First World War, the introduction of the Fordson Model F revolutionised farming. The front line took its toll with

The season of shows and open days got off to a terrific start with T H WHITE’s own open day at the Stockbridge Branch which gave visitors the opportunity to see how the business there has developed in its first year. Verging on 100 guests attended throughout the day, the focus being on the latest Case IH equipment presented

by the sales team of Stuart Crook and Simon Pratt. The flagship Axial combine harvester appeared alongside Magnum, Optum, Quadtrac and Farmall tractors. Experienced staff were also on hand from our key brands, Pottinger, Warwick, McConnel and Manitou. A series of presentations held the attention of the audience and the whole branch, workshops and parts department were open for tours. The conversation flowed and a useful day was enjoyed by our many visitors. At about the same time the Commercial Vehicle Show (photo above) was taking place at the NEC Birmingham at which the new Palfinger BM26 Builders Merchants crane (see White’s World May issue) made its debut. Strong interest means that this will now be test marketed. The outdoor arena made it possible to display more kit including the latest hook and skip loaders, also showcasing the body building capability of the Lorry Cranes division and underlining the added value offered by T H WHITE in supporting crane users over the lifetime of the equipment.

In early May T H WHITE attended the Badminton Horse Trials where the new Honda Pioneer UTV attracted plenty of interest and once again we were able to provide a range of machinery for the

organisers to use during the event. In mid-May T H WHITE Groundcare was at the ever-popular Three Counties Show at Malvern, and on 12 May the new and improved showground at Westonbirt Arboretum was the venue for the Arb Show, the first trade show for Jensen UK with T H WHITE Machinery Imports. Over 5000 visitors attended the show over the two days, resulting in lots of interest and machine enquiries for Bill Johnston, Business Manager of Jensen UK. Bill was helped on the stand by Charles Walters, owner of Arbrep Services a UK dealer, and by two colleagues from Jensen, Germany. Of all the Jensen woodchippers on display, the new A530 Petrol created a great deal of interest. This real work horse has a large 35hp petrol engine, powering a trailed wood chipper, whilst weighing less than 750kg. Many wood chipper enquiries

from the show have been passed on to the local dealers, which has already resulted in demonstrations being booked in for both May and June. Jensen’s German manufacturing and engineering quality is evident in the most popular machine, the A530 L, which has a 6in timber capacity, with blades and an anvil that can be changed simply and quickly. This machine also has an enviable work rate, processing more than 15 cubic metres of timber per hour.

the loss of 170,000 farmers and 500,000 farm horses, so all the early Fordson production was shipped to the UK to assist the war effort. From that first, basic tractor followed a famous line of blue tractors including the Model N which played a vital role during WWII, and the famous Fordson Major of the 1950s. From 1964 Ford tractors were all simply branded ‘Ford’ rather than ‘Fordson’, then

following the purchase of Sperry-New Holland in 1986 Ford-New Holland was formed. The enterprise was sold to Fiat in 1991 and today the famous family of tractors is simply known as New Holland. Many of the first Fordsons came to T H WHITE in 1917, starting work on Wiltshire farms a year before American farmers could buy them, and the Devizes-based company which was founded in 1832 has remained a dealer ever since. T H WHITE managing director Alex Scott said: “We are proud to have played a part in this event which is one of several that have been taking place around the world. Its success is due to the amazing effort that everyone put in – a superb collaboration with New Holland, The Big Ford Tractor Register and Devizes Young Farmers. Credit must also go our kind host Jim Butler. It really proves what a great show can be put on when everyone gets together and we are truly grateful for support from a wide range of local companies and volunteers from the local community. “Local farmers played a huge part too and in the weeks leading up to the May Day rally social media was buzzing with people promising to bring this or that tractor. On the day the turnout was magnificent with tractors from all eras of the Fordson/Ford/New Holland story showing just what a strong following there is for this iconic brand.”

Like all infrastructure, solar PV systems will perform at their best and deliver the highest possible yields with regular attention. First of all comes safety. Solar PV installations comprise many electrical parts which need to be checked as wear and tear can manifest itself in a number of ways – especially on commercial properties. Secondly – although it may seem obvious – is the need to keep panels clean. The cleaner the panel, the more power it will generate, and the more panels that are fully operational, the more you will earn. Keeping your software up to date is also likely to bring a number of benefits, not least the continually improving ability to optimise your equipment and monitor its performance. T H WHITE Energy, Fire & Security can help with all these things. We are able to undertake everything from a basic service in which we check all the components of a system for safety and performance, panel cleaning, monitoring and technical support, grass cutting (especially for solar ‘farms’), drone photography (to check the status of difficult-to-access areas) and install smart meters to check for feasibility of battery systems. To keep a system functioning at its best we recommend annual servicing. Panel cleaning may need to be carried out more frequently depending on the location as dust or leaf matter can have a strong negative impact on generating capacity, but cleaning should be carried out at least once a year. A client who is a dairy farmer

T H WHITE customer Alastair Hunter-Blair decided to create a photograph to remember at his wedding in May – with the help of a New Holland Blue Power T7-270 lent by T H WHITE’s Toddington branch. Alastair, who farms near Ross-on-Wye, perched on the front of the tractor with his bride and was joined by the best man, bridesmaids, family and friends for this wedding picture with a difference. We give them our warmest wishes for a long and happy marriage!

had noticed a drop in his solar energy yields. There was a lot of airborne dust from the dairy operations, but after T H WHITE cleaned the panels there was an immediate leap in generation of more than 15 per cent. Our monitoring service is a worthwhile add-on as we can often detect potential faults before you do and offer technical

support. One of the problems that has arisen in the solar energy business over recent years is that many suppliers have come and gone. When you commit to a solar installation it’s important to know that the contractor you use will be there for the long term to keep your system performing at its best throughout its

life. T H WHITE has been trading since 1832 and is a company that you can count on to be there to support the 25 year guarantee on your panels. We encountered a situation recently where a customer whose system had been installed by a company no longer trading called us in. His system was in poor condition and the list of faults included damaged cables, panels not connected and inverters not working. After we overhauled his system the customer now has a full complement of operational panels. T H WHITE Energy, Fire & Security has a dedicated full time technical support and service team. Our team members have installed thousands of solar systems in the last 10 years, including the recent installation of one of the largest rooftop systems in the UK. Apart from judging us byour track record, customers choose us because we are MCS and Safe Contractor-Accredited for solar PV, complying with CDM 2015 standards for safety. If you would like to ensure that your solar PV installation is performing at its best, we have a range of service packages to suit everyone. For the full details just call us on 01380 726656.

When the Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon was launched last year, the car on many people’s dream list was the 510bhp Giulia Quadrifoglio. Now, the latest addition to the Giulia line-up – the Veloce – combines much of the distinctive Italian styling and dynamic talents of the range-topping car with accessible performance and luxury at an affordable price. Sitting between the flagship Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Giulia Speciale, the new Veloce is the first car to use a newly-designed all-aluminium 2.0 litre petrol engine producing 280bhp. Delivering the power through an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive, the Veloce will reach 62mph in just 5.7seconds, going on to a top speed of 149mph. That is achieved without sacrificing economy either, as the new engine returns 46.3mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 141g/km CO2. An option is a new four-wheel-drive system which Alfa calls ‘Q4’ tech. The system allows up to 60 percent of torque

to be sent to the front wheels when required, with rear-wheel drive remaining the norm during everyday driving. The Giulia Veloce shares the sports exterior styling of the Speciale, but adds 18-inch 10-spoke Turbine alloy wheels. Optional Misano Blue paint is available exclusively on the Giulia Veloce. Inside, the driver focused layout is complemented by a choice of black, tan or red Italian leather sport seats and aluminium shift paddles on the steering column. Available now, the Veloce is priced from £37,935 OTR. For more information call us on 01793 393530.

Two Fiat Professional vehicles have been honoured in the 2017 Trade Van Driver Awards. The Talento, which joined the Fiat’s commercial vehicle range last year, has been named ‘Traders’ Choice’ by Trade Van Driver magazine, while the Fiat Professional Fiorino received the ‘Best City Van’ accolade. The judging panel included not only the magazine’s experts, but also a selection of readers who use light commercial vehicles every day in their businesses. They commented that the new Talento “ticks all the boxes for traders who need a stylish, comfortable van which will transport five cubic metres or so of cargo,” and that “the Fiorino is the perfect tool for trade users who need a small van for city use.” The Fiat Professional Talento Cargo van starts at £19,995+VAT and is available in low and high roof versions, as well as long and short wheelbase with load space up to 8.6m3. Despite its compact dimensions, the Fiorino van offers load space up to 2.8m3 and starts at £11,565+VAT. For more details or to arrange a test drive, contact our Fiat Group Brand Centre in Swindon, 01793 393524.
