Crescent Beach Crescent Beach in South Surrey is known as one of the best swimming beaches in the Lower Mainland. It’s also popular with kayakers, fishermen, crabbers and those who simply seek a sunny retreat from the city. Renowned for great beaches, amazing cuisine,
superb arts and culture and stunning sunsets,
White Rock and South Surrey are well-loved vacation
destinations. With plenty of local charm – not to mention
great outdoor activities – you’ll quickly
fall in love with this area, too!
FYi5,000 years ago:The lands south of present-day Surrey are the traditional home of the Semiahmoo First Nation – a Coast Salish people whose culture is still vibrant in the area today.
1891:Early settler James Hawthornthwaite buys land in White Rock to homestead. His quaint yellow house – one of the oldest in the city – still stands at 15180 Columbia Avenue.
1894:Homesteader John Stewart completes his Fraser Valley Victorian-style farmhouse in South Surrey. Today this beautiful building is known as Historic Stewart Farm.
Kwomais Point ParkThe Semiahmoo people who first occupied this area named it Kwomais or “place of vision,” thanks to its high bluffs and unobstructed ocean views. Today this scenic green space, situated just south of Crescent Beach in the Ocean Park neighbourhood, has been developed into a public park offering scenic trails, breathtaking vistas, public art installations and two unique heritage facilities – Kwomais Lodge and Sanford Hall – that attract visitors from near and far. oceanpark.bc.ca Photo: City of Surrey

South Surrey’s Historic Stewart FarmLocated in South Surrey’s idyllic Elgin Heritage Park, this historic farm provides the entire family a way to step back in time and learn about the area’s early pioneering days. Built in 1894, the farm’s been lovingly preserved and restored and depicts life as it would have been for early settlers. White Rock PierWhite Rock’s 475-metre (1,559-foot) pier is a destination unto itself. Walk to the end to check out local fishermen’s daily catch and bask in the impressive views of Mount Baker and the San Juan Islands of Washington state. Take an after-dinner stroll to witness breathtaking sunsets and feel the ocean’s warm breeze. White Rock PromenadeWhite Rock’s famous promenade runs almost the entire length of the beach, providing plenty of access points to attractions, such as the Grand Chief Bernard Charles Memorial Plaza that speaks to the community’s strong ties to the Semiahmoo First Nation. The promenade also plays centre stage in White Rock’s many festivals and events, such as the Spirit of the Sea Festival, summer afternoon musicians and for watching the international Tour de White Rock cycling race. 1957:White Rock is granted provincial permission to become its own municipality.
2011: As part of Surrey, South Surrey is one of the fastest-growing and most culturally diverse communities in Canada.
1909:Thanks to the new railroad, White Rock becomes a resort destination for travellers looking to soak up some sun on the beach.
1970s:The Semiahmoo Heritage Trail becomes the first designated heritage site in South Surrey. It once served as a land link from New Westminster to the U.S.

Bird Watching Boundary Bay is one of Canada’s important bird areas,
with several million shorebirds and waterfowl stopping to feed and rest here during migration. You’ll marvel at these magnificent creatures’ gracious presence.
Crescent Beach (in South Surrey) and its surrounding area is referred to as Mud Bay and has a diversity of habitats ranging from eelgrass beds to large sections of open mud flats, making it a paradise for bird-lovers. You’ll also see over 50 different species on any given day in White Rock, especially from the promenade and pier. Here’s a sampling of some feathered friends you can expect to find here:
the bottom of Buena Vista at Oxford Street and finish just beyond Martin Street; the top five in each category then race for the top three spots on the podium. With cheering spectators and gorgeous views of Semiahmoo Bay, this is the perfect lead for the weekend’s festivities.
Saturday, July 13: Choices Markets CriteriumMen’s Categories 3 & 4: 4 p.m.; Women’s Pro 1, 2 & 3: 5 p.m.; Men’s Pro 1 & 2: 6 p.m. Riders reach speeds of up to 70 kilometres (43 miles) an hour as they race along a 1-kilometre (0.62-mile) loop from Johnston Road, around Five Corners, past City Hall and back around White Rock Elementary. The exciting shoulder-to-shoulder sprints of the “Crit” provide many thrilling moments as competitors surge ahead to chase cash in the prime (pronounced “preem”) laps. Racing in
the lead pack and maneuvering for position is as exhilarating for the competitors as it is for the spectators.
Sunday, July 14: Peace Arch news Road RaceMen’s: 9 a.m.; Women’s: 9:05 a.m. The weekend wraps up with this renowned race, which takes cyclists through the beautiful landscapes of White Rock’s hilly seaside. Semiahmoo Bay and Mount Baker provide picturesque backdrops as spectators watch the action from restaurants and shops along Marine Drive. This race tests athletes’ endurance and stamina with long, steep climbs, sharp turns and quick descents – elements that demand the keen attention, clever tactics and toughness honed by seasoned cyclists. Now in its 33rd year, the Road Race is one of the most prestigious and historic races in North America.
tidal Pools The soft sands and long tides at East Beach create crescent-shaped tidal pools when the ocean recedes. Kids can use skim boards to skip from pool to pool across the flat beach. The pools also make ideal playgrounds for young children, who can safely splash around looking for shellfish and other ocean souvenirs.
