Whistler’s Watercolor
Paintings
Watercolors
by an American Master
Green and Silver: Beaulieu, Touraine (1888)
Whistler’s watercolors are quick with lots of open space. They seem almost abstract in their approach to form and light. The colors are muted and monochromatic.
Note in Opal: Breakfast. 1883 or 1884.
Bravura in Brown. 1883 or 1884.
It is interesting that despite Whistler’s well known ego, his watercolors seem egoless.
They seem to be private moments for the artist and not meant public viewing.
Shorline ( 1884)
In this work you can get a sense of Whistler’s fascination with atmosphere.
Seascape (1887)
Pink Note: The Novelette
The Fire Wheel
This piece barely reads as representational and is spilling over with emotion and atmosphere. His landscapes become internal realms in a way that is far ahead of his time.
Chelsea Shops
The Shop - An Exterior1884
With great economy, Whistler is able to say so much and with such confidence!
