Northwood University Automobile Show
Ford Model T Plant Tour (continued)
built there including closed cars, multiple truck styles and a rare 4 wheel drive version.
The factory is a still a work in progress with more historical restoration underway to both the building and the vehicles on display. Future visitors will be
able to see even more than we did. I’m sure those in attendance for this event would recommend it as
an educational and enjoyable outing for all ages. We had fun. You can learn more by visiting the website at www.tplex.org or calling 313-872-8759.
Dave
Do to an unusual circumstance, I had the opportunity to participate in the 47th annual Northwood University outdoor auto show the weekend of October 15-16-17. My involvement started when I contacted Brad Bergman of Northwood, per his request in the Indicator magazine, “Jaguars Wanted for Car Show”. Brad was the Team Captain for the Jaguar and Aston Martin display for the show. Unfortunately, at the last minute, Brad found out that the dealership scheduled to provide cars for the event decided against participating. By using the internet Brad located the Jaguar of Michigan Club and a dealer in Grand Rapids and asked for some late model cars to display, but to no avail. With less than a week before the show, I suggested he call Dave Keenan at DeNooyer Jaguar in Kalamazoo. Within hours he had a commitment for a new XJL and a new XF in Botanical Green! Since the display space was big enough to accommodate four cars, Brad suggested that my ’67 XKE coupe be included in the display, as the Aston Martin that he had arranged for was not going to be there either.
The Northwood campus is beautiful in the fall colors and it always makes for a good outdoor car show. Over 450 new cars and trucks were on display from around the world. A Classic Car Show was also available on Sunday. As part of their curriculum,
all students have an opportunity to participate in organizing, planning and displaying vehicles, auto parts displays and food vendors. Each student is required to be able to answer an array of questions from the inquiring public…. “how many horse power in this one; who owns Jaguar now; where is this car made; is this a new car (the XKE); do they still make the S Type; is a diesel available; etc. etc.”Although my car was only on display Sunday, I can tell you that the Jaguar display was busy with people of all ages taking pictures of the cars.
I would like to suggest that in the future, the Jaguar club could have a good time displaying their cars in the Sunday Classic Car Show. It would be a pleasant and colorful drive to Midland , MI . Mark your calendars for next year, the show will be the weekend of September 30, October 1 -2, 2011. It is free!

Ford Model T Plant TourJust days after our annual stirring charity auction the club reassembled on Saturday morning for a personalized tour of the historic Ford Piquette Avenue plant. Six Jaguars and an enthusiastic band of members made the trip to the heart of Detroit and the birthplace of the Model T.
We began with a special arrangement to view the restoration shop where various older cars are brought back to their initial luster
by a
combination of skilled craftsmen and eager volunteers. The highlight was a close-up inspection of a
1912 Model T in near original condition complete with a detailed explanation of many of its period-correct features. As a further bonus, six running Model Ts came motoring into the courtyard and sufficiently distracted our group from entering the factory as their owners were happy to answer all the questions we could muster.
Once inside, our dedicated tour guide Pat took us for a walk through history
as she explained the significance of many artifacts on display in the former office of Henry Ford. Moving into the factory area itself on the 2nd floor, we learned how the concept of the assembly line was formulated by having young boys move the cars in progress from station to station for further assembly. Combining this concept with an organized stockpiling of all the parts necessary for a vehicle, a world record was set in 1907 when 101 Ford Model N cars were built in a single day at a time when other factories did well to make 60. Although the moving assembly line was never installed in this plant, the groundwork
for its implementation was born on that day.
Moving up to the third floor, we were allowed to enter the “secret room” where the Model T was born. The idea of a car designed for easy assembly and affordability was so radical that Henry was determined to keep it under wraps until it was ready for production. The Piquette Avenue plant saw that
idea come to fruition as the first 12,000 Model Ts were built there. Initially they were mostly painted red or green and it wasn’t until later that the faster drying black
paint was instituted as a mandatory cost reduction. We were fortunate to view numerous examples of the various Model Ts that were ultimately designed and
