Each evening at dusk (approximately 5:30 p.m.) Local businesses, churches and organizations provide fl oats for your viewing pleasure. The parade is announced and is clearly heard in the middle block of Main Street, starting on Main Street by the city park and traveling down the street past Piccadilly Square (City Auditorium.) The N.D. Firefi ghter’s Museum, on Main Street, is a popular attraction that ranks with Wally Walleye.

During the Dickens Village Festival the museum and hall of fame is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Hugh P. Minehan Post 49 American Legion Build-ing, in Garrison’s City Park at the top of Main Street behind Wally Walleye, is another location to warm up and relax.

The building is open each Friday and Saturday of the festi-val from 4-8 p.m. Coffee and hot cocoa are available.

The Garrison Senior Center, located on Central Avenue and adjoining City Hall, is another location to relax or to warm up, or both! The center is open from 2-7 p.m., each day of the festival.

Step back in time Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26 with the First Congregational Church’s English High Tea.

While enjoying tea, scones and open-faced sandwiches, a brief history of the church will be shared. Along with the sale of baked goods and handcrafted items, a Victorian style hat will be provided to wear while the festivities are enjoyed.

Since its arrival, The Queen Eliza-bus has made her way into the hearts of the community and its guests.

While she was once called a “majes-tic old beast,” the Garrison community now sees her as a beauty. The trans-formation required hundreds of hours of volunteer labor and included a huge fundraising drive.

The refurbished Queen Elizabus was on the streets in 2009 with new paint, replaced window stripping, signage, reupholstered seats and new carpeting.

In 2010, the fl ooring was completed; the PA system and heat have also been improved. Better heating was added to the driver’s cab.

The next step was to build a shel-ter to house the Queen. The Dickens Festival Committee purchased a small building on Main Street that once served as offi ce space for Camp of the Cross Ministries. (The Camp offi ces relocated and Dickens is in the process of selling the building.)

When the queen isn’t in use, it can be viewed inside its “home.” A 20x40 building with 16-foot sidewalls – and plexi-glass panels for easy year-around viewing -- was constructed behind the building in 2011.

The efforts to improve the bus were all part of a major fundraising effort that involved the individual “sale” of seats, corporate donations and the gen-erosity of the Garrison Sales and Use Tax Committee. (Check out the list of donors on a plaque inside the bus.)

Once ready for its makeover, there were more obstacles for the Queen.

The only commercial painting bid was for $19,000 from a Bismarck company, so volunteers took on the project during the summer and fall of 2009. Upholstery and carpeting were done by Brenda’s Decor.

Volunteers Dick and Melissa Mes-serly, Ryan Nelson and Raymond Halv-erson devoted numerous evenings and weekends to the bus project. Brenda Mai, owner of Brenda’s Decor, enlisted the help of brothers Floyd and Richard Kolobakken when she was “re-install-ing” wall board in the 11th hour before the 2009 festival.

In 2014, the Queen blew a gasket. Since English gaskets are impossible to fi nd in the states, the help of an Olde England repair shop was enlisted to make a mold of the old gasket and create a new one. Rensch’s, an auto and farm equipment business in Garrison, became the Queen’s repair shop and she was restored to running order.

The once dowdy queen that arrived in May 2005, had become worthy of her name, Queen Elizabus. It’s a name she’d been given before arriving in Garrison.

Tickets to ride aboard the Queen Elizabus may be pur-chased at the Information Center in the City Auditorium.

Rides aboard the “Queen” are $3 for each passenger who requires a seat.

The 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. trips (approximately an hour) go to Fort Stevenson’s Guardhouse Interpretive Center. There, passengers can view historical and heritage displays.

The 2 p.m. ride is a 30-minute tour around town.

The 5 p.m. ride includes being part of the lighted parade on Main Street.

The 6:30 p.m. ride is a 30-minute ride to view lighted homes. As a convenience to those who will be attending the play, riders of the 6:30 tour will be dropped off in front of the Kota Theater so they can take part in the sing-a-long that precedes the play.

The cherry red double-decker 1961 English bus fi rst appeared at the Garrison Chamber of Commerce’s annual kick-off to summer in 2005. Since then the Queen can be spotted at many local events, weddings, area community celebrations and open houses.

The double-decker came to Garrison as part of a brain-storming session by former Fort Stevenson State Park Manager Dick Messerly and local business owner Mike

Gackle. After exploring the internet, they learned such a vehicle existed. They searched for one that was both afford-able and could be transported to Garrison. The closest was in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

After hearing about the idea, the Dickens Village Festival Committee decided to purchase the bus, sight unseen.

The rest is history.

Expanding this year is the Dickens Quilt Show. It’s been moved from The Meadows Assisted Living Center to a new location, across the street from Piccadilly Square. Who’s that in the long white beard and fl owing red cape? Why it’s none other than Father Christmas.

Father Christmas will appear on Main Street at various times during the Dickens Village Festival.

The legend of Father Christmas began in England during an old English mid-winter festi-val. The attire of the time was green. Red-attired Father Christmas fi rst appeared in the mid 1870s.

St. Nicholas was called Sinter Klaas in Dutch and Santa Claus came from a dis-torted pronunciation of Sinter Klaas.

Father Christmas is essentially an Anglo-Saxon notion.

Santa Claus is not a mythical or fi ctional char-acter. The history of Father Christmas says the character is based on St. Nicholas who was a saint in Myra in the Fourth Century.

St. Nicholas was shy and help-ing the poor without disclosing his identity was not an easy task. One day he climbed up the roof of a house and dropped down a purse full of money through the chimney, which landed in a girl’s stocking.

Probably the idea of Santa Clause giving gifts in stockings came from this.

While the Dickens Village Festival is already a family-oriented event, organizers are taking the family concept one step further this year. They are also giving away things for free.

It’s free admission for children 12 and under to this year’s Sunday afternoon entertainment. Taking to the Kota Theater stage is comic ventriloquist and comedian James Wedgwood.

According to his website, Wedgwood’s show is “The Most Fun You Can Have Without Moving Your Lips!”

Wedgwood uses comic ventriloquism, outrageous charac-ters and hilarious audience participation to give the audience a memorable entertainment experience.

Like a one-man variety show, Wedgwood makes virtu-ally everything talk - from wooden “associates,” to purses, bottles, and even audience members. A game show, singing and much more are all part of the fun.

You can enjoy a Christmas cupcake with A Dickens char-acter during Treats with Tiny Tim at 1 p.m., at Piccadilly Square.

Family Day entertainer, ventriloquist and comedian James Wedgwood takes to the Kota Theater Stage Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.

Part of the day’s activities will be strolling characters, or mascots, featuring Wally Walleye, Sparky the Fire Dog, Roscoe, the Trooper mascot, Frosty the Snowman and other characters.
