A Quick Comparison of P25 Phase 2 Trunking Portable s

How in the world does a lay person determine which P25 radio is "the right choice". To help you analyze the real

differences between the big four manufacturers. The simple answer is that you want a radio you can wear (small

physical size), one you can understand (the ones with Enhanced Vocoders), the one with a battery life between

charging that is equal to at least one shift, one that can take rugged use and provides maximum resistance to dust and

moisture (the IP rating with the larger the number the better), and one that meets the operational requirements of the

user (two knobs versus one, keypad versus non-keypad) and whether or not you think Made in America is important.

It's a given that any public safety P25 radio purchased today should have a Mission Critical rating, trunking, Phase 2

capability and never even consider any Vocoder other than the latest Enhanced version. Other options should be

available, but the main consideration should be Does the radio do what you want to do at the price you want to pay,

and do you have confidence in the reliability of the radio? The BK/Relm portable has a MTBF (Mean Time Before

Failure) of 721,058 hours, or putting it another way, 99.2% of KNG radios can be assumed to be failure free for the first

year and 95% are failure free after ten years! Or, consider the fact that the US Forest Service, with the toughest

operating standards in the USA, has over 67,000 BK radios in service. So, what is the best choice in P25 portables? The

figures speak for themselves.

One last consideration - the cost of upkeep AFTER the warranty period! With Relm, the flat rate cost is less than HALF

the cost of Motorola and software upgrades and post warranty support is FREE for the life of the radio. The clear choice

is the KNG series by Relm Wireless! Or, if you want the best value AND the lowest initial cost, the choice is Tait. The

others are, well, just the others.......
