WHICH ACID IS RIGHT FOR YOUR SKIN?

Page 2: Which acid is right for your skin

An acid sounds like something you wouldn’t want anywhere near your face, but there are some acids that are important in skin care routines. Here is a list of different acids and what they work best for.

SALICYLIC ACID Salicylic acid or beta hydroxy acid as it is sometimes called. This acid

removes the top layer of skin when the pores are clogged, so it is best for those with oily skin or acne. It can be used on dry or sensitive skin as long as it is combined in a moisturizer with other hydrating ingredients. Pregnant women should not use this however, because it has been linked to birth defects.

ALPHA-HYDROXY ACID

The next acid is Alpha-hydroxy acid. Alpha hydroxyl acids are a group of acids based on their chemical appearance. For example, there is lactic acid (derived from milk), glycolic acid (derived from sugar), citric acid (derived from citrus fruits) and tartric acid (derived specifically from grapes). They are chemical exfoliants that have been shown to promote collagen and reduce hyperpigmentation. These are great for any skin type.

HYALURONIC ACID Next is Hyaluronic acid, which is best for dry skin. This

ingredient can actually pull moisture from the air into your skin so it stays moisturized and healthy. It is great when found in moisturizers and moisturizing treatments at a salon or spa. If you live in an exceptionally dry climate, look for a moisturizer with Hyaluronic acid or keep one on hand for the dry and cold winter months.

FERULIC AND ALPHA LIPOIC ACIDS

Lastly, there are Ferulic and Alpha Lipoic acids. Both of them are antioxidants, which reduce the amount of free radicals from the environment that hurt your skin. They also aid in collagen production so your skin stays plump and young.

HOW TO USE It is a good idea to test a small area of your skin before you try

a new product on your face, especially one with acids in them. If you have very sensitive skin, you may want to consult your dermatologist before trying certain products or treatments..
