EAGER TO LOVE

A couple of weeks ago, while on retreat, I took with me a book title “Eager To Love” by Fr. Richard Rohr,

a Franciscan friar and National Bestselling Author. The sub-title is “The Alternative Way of Francis of

Assisi”. The book jacket remarks that “Fr. Rohr draws in scripture, insights from psychology, and literary

and artistic references, to weave together an understanding of the traditions as first practice by St. Francis.”

I was intrigued to see how St. Francis’ ideas and philosophy would translate to our daily spirituality and

thinking in the present day.

This is not a book report, but because of recent events in Paris, Brussels, and other terrorist activities

around the world and here in the US, and the rhetoric surrounding them, one chapter caught my attention,

thoughts, and meditations. The title of the chapter is “Entering the World of Another: Francis and the Sul-

tan of Egypt”.

In this chapter Rohr discusses the events surrounding the nine Crusades (1095 – 1291) and the effort in

1219 of Francis in trying to bring together both sides of the Christian-Muslin issues. He writes “it is signifi-

cant to realize that the mistrust, fear, and hatred between the East and the West in the 13th century and

between Christianity and Islam matches if not exceeds what we are facing today.”

Francis made several attempts, leaving his own culture at “great cost” to go to the Sultan of Egypt. On his

third attempt he went to Egypt to primarily tell his own Christian troops that they were wrong in what they

were doing. Francis is recorded to have said to the troops:

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. Our Lord Jesus Christ himself, in whose footsteps

we must follow, called the man who betrayed him friend, and gave himself up of his own accord to his

executioners. Therefore our friends are those who for no reason cause us trouble and suffering, shame

or injury, pain or torture, even martyrdom and death. It is these we must love and love very much,

because they give us eternal life.”

I think it advantageous for us to mediate on these words of Francis and ask ourselves some questions:

• What are we and/or our country’s leaders doing to perpetuate the feelings of animosity toward another’s

religion or way of faith? How can we change this attitude toward others to a more loving one?

• What are we doing to bring Jesus’ and Francis’ message of love in our own lives and of those around

us?

• Do we really believe that Jesus is working in our lives to bring peace in the world and how are we

working for that peace?

I can’t answer these questions for you, because they are even difficult for me to get a handle on. But I do

know that prayer to God to change our viewpoints and mediating on our own relationship with others will

be the starting points. Good luck in your working out these questions but remember the opening works or

the “Prayer of St. Francis”:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Deacon Bob

We are still in need of Saturday Ushers

Our Usher Ministry represents the face of Saints Peter and Paul Parish to the many who come to

worship as part of our faith community. The ushers welcoming presence conveys the spirit of our commu-

nity and makes that very critical positive first impression.

During our liturgies, our ministries are responsible for greeting and welcoming, helping those with

special needs, gathering assembly donations, selecting those to bring forward the gifts, assisting at Holy

Communion, distributing programs and bulletins, and providing other assistance and/or information

where needed.

The overall goal of Usher Ministry is to perform tasks that foster the community's full participation

in the liturgy from the time anyone enters the church.

Who Can Serve

Anyone, 18 years of age or older, is invited to join the usher team. Training is provided by experienced

ushers and/or the Lead Usher. Teens under 18 may usher with a parent.

How to Join

Interested individuals can sign-up for the Usher Ministry by contacting Eddie Griffin [email protected]

or Contact the Parish Office: (434) 589-5201.
