concerning the Community list of less-favoured farming areas within the meaning ofDirective No 75/268/EEC

(United Kingdom)

75% of the national average (£ 1 072 and £ 1 436respectively);

Whereas the index relating to the low populationdensity referred to in Article 3 (4) ( c ) of DirectiveNo 75/268/EEC does not exceed 36 inhabitants persquare kilometre (the national and Communityaverages being 228 and 168 inhabitants per squarekilometre respectively ; whereas the minimum proportion of the working population engaged in agricultureas a percentage of the total working population is19% (the national and Community averages being3-08 and 9-58 % respectively);

"Whereas the nature and level of the abovementionedindices, utilized by the Government of the UnitedKingdom to define the areas notified to the Commission , corresponds to the characteristics of lessfavoured farming areas referred to in Article 3 (4) ofDirective No 75/268/EEC;

Whereas according to the information supplied bythe Member State concerned, these areas haveadequate amenities,

THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES,

Having regard to the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community ;

Having regard to Council Directive No 75/268/EEC (*) of 28 April 1975 on mountain and hillfarming and farming in certain less-favoured areas ,and in particular Article 2 (2 ) thereof ;

Having regard to the proposal from the Commission ;

Having regard to the Opinion of the EuropeanParliament ;

Having regard to the Opinion of the Economic andSocial Committee (2 );

Whereas the United Kingdom Government has communicated to the Commission, in accordance withArticle 2 ( 1 ) of Directive No 75/268/EEC, six areassuitable for inclusion in the Community list of lessfavoured farming areas, and information concerningthe characteristics of these areas ;

Whereas the following indices, relating to thepresence of land of limited potential referred to inArticle 3 (4) (a) of Directive No 75/268/EEC, havebeen utilized to define each of the areas : roughgrazing greater than 49% of combined permanentand rough grazing, livestock density below 0-78livestock units per forage hectare and farm rents notexceeding 48% of the national average (£ 2-53 and£ 5-32 per acre respectively);

Whereas the economic results of farming beingconsiderably lower than the mean as referred to inArticle 3 (4) (b ) of Directive No 75/268/EEC weredefined using indices reflecting an earned incomeper man work unit (estimated for the years 1970/71 ,1971/72 and 1972/73 after exclusion of directsubsidies, i.e. hill production grants ) not exceeding

HAS ADOPTED THIS DIRECTIVE :

Article 1

The areas of the United Kingdom which appear inthe Annex shall form part of the Community listof less-favoured farming areas within the meaningof Article 3 (4) of Council Directive No 75/268/EEC.

Article 2

This Directive is addressed to the United Kingdom.
