Welcome new members and visitors

to St Pius X Parish. We

hope you feel welcome and

will participate in the many

activities here whether you

are a regular parishioner, a

seasonal resident or just

visiting. For families with

babies, two quieting rooms

are available in the nave of

the church, toward the

back. Large windows allow

mothers or fathers to con-

tinue to see and participate

in Mass, as you sooth the

baby by rocking. Childcare

is located in the St. Paul

Room and is available to

babies and young children,

at the 9:00 a.m., 11:00

a.m., and 5:00 p.m. Sunday

Masses. For children 4 to 6

years old, Children’s

Church is available at the

9:00 a.m. Mass. Children’s

Church allows children to

hear the Word of God in a

way that their hearts can

understand, so that they too

can grow in their faith.

Please ask a greeter for

help in locating these are-

as, as well as restrooms,

water fountains, or other

areas of interest in our

church. We are so glad

you have come!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Among the opening words of the Bible, in

the book of Genesis, we read the following:

“God created man in His image, in the di-

vine image He created him; male and fe-

male He created them”. (Gen. 1:27) From

the very beginning of time, we learn of the

dignity and sacredness of the human person

as intended by God. In the account of eve-

rything created by God, only the human

person is created in the image and likeness

of God. From this fundamental truth, we

learn that each and every human person is a

direct and unique creation of God, called

into being and given an everlasting destiny

of sharing in God’s life.

In light of so many troubling events occur-

ring in our day and time, I find it important

to reiterate this fundamental truth. When

the sacred connection between God and the

human person is clouded or eliminated, the

sin of racism raises its ugly head. History

teaches us what happens when evil is not

exposed and left unchecked. We must re-

member that evil grows when good people

remain silent. Ethnic cleansing of whole

populations, enslavement of peoples simply

because of the color of their skin, human

trafficking, and the holocaust of Jews are

just a few examples. These evils begin

with an acceptance of racism.

Racism believes that someone is less of a

person, has less dignity, or is less deserving

of respect because of the color of their skin,

their nationality, religion or gender. Rac-

ism looks upon another as less deserving of

respect because of their race or class. Rac-

ism can be manifested in violence towards

others, discrimination, harsh and demean-

ing language, subtle words and actions used

for the purpose of denigrating a person’s

worth, and societal structures that deny

basic human rights. It is a sin and a direct

affront to God who creates each and every

human person out of love.

In our time, the rise of hate groups like

Neo-Nazis, the KKK, and White Suprema

cist Groups all have the sin of racism at

their core. All people of good will should

expose such evil for what it is and work to

create a culture that respects each human

person as created in the image of God. “For

God so loved the world that He gave His

only Son, so that everyone who believes in

Him might not perish but may have ever-

lasting life. (John 3:16).

Our Diocese of Lafayette is a rich and col-

orful mosaic of many cultures and people.

The original Acadians were exiled from

their homes because their religion and na-

tionality. We are blessed with a large Afri-

can American Catholic culture. They en-

dured deportation from their homes, slav-

ery, segregation, exploitation, inhuman

mistreatment, and extreme racism. Yet,

through all their suffering, their faith en-

dured and inspires us to this day. Now,

Vietnamese, Hispanics, Filipinos and many

other cultures show us the beauty and varie-

ty of God’s creation.

Let us create that culture of respect and

reverence for each human person from con-

ception in the womb to natural death. Chil-

dren should hear in school and at home that

racism is sinful and against God’s will.

They should be told that hateful speech,

derogatory language, racial jokes, and dis-

crimination against others because of the

color of their skin will not be tolerated. St.

John reminds us in his letter that love of

God necessarily means love of our neigh-

bor who is created in the image and like-

ness of God. “Whoever says he loves God

but hates his neighbor, lies.” (1 John 4:20)

May God lead all of us to a love for all our

brothers and sisters in His family.

Centennial News Sunday January 14, 2018

A New Diocese is Named On January 11, 1918, Pope Benedict

XV officially created the Diocese of Lafayette. News reached New Orleans weeks later. The Pope did not immediately name a bishop for the new diocese, so the Archdio-cese of New Orleans continued to look after the new diocese until a Bishop was in place. Fr. Teurlings and the parishioners at St. John in Lafayette, had completed a new church just two years prior. In February, Fr. Teurlings received the word that his new church would serve as the Cathedral of the new diocese.

Centennial Indulgence An indulgence granted by Pope Francis

can be gained throughout this Cen-tennial Year by all who visit the Cathedral of St. John the Evange-list and pray the Centennial Prayer (with the usual conditions for an indulgence). Please see the Dioc-esan Webpage for more infor-mation. The Centennial Prayer will be in the Cathedral beginning January 11th or you may print it from the webpage (available in various languages on webpage).
