Introduction

West Valley and Mission College play a critical role in providing local, high quality, affordable higher education in our community.

Every semester over 20,000 students enroll in courses both at West Valley (located in Saratoga) and at Mission (located right here in Santa Clara).

Our colleges currently serve over 40,000 people per year.

Thousands of additional students take online, off-campus, or non-credit courses and seminars.

On-Going Needs at Mission College

Campus is 32 years old.

Nearly 11,000 students are enrolled annually at Mission College

Though we have added classrooms and instructional space, we need additional, permanent classrooms and effective, academic facilities that support 21st century teaching and learning.

Nearly 40% of classrooms and facilities are still housed in portables and temporary modules.

Our key project priorities and needs include additional classrooms and educational upgrades related to completing our new main building, replacing portable classrooms with high quality general education classrooms, providing a state-of-the-art Technology Institute/Classroom building and a new Performing Arts building.

Updating academic facilities and technology to help students prepare to transfer to 4-year universities.

Accommodating more students in high demand classes that currently have long waiting lists.

Repairing or replacing leaky roofs, heating, cooling, plumbing and electricity to ensure effective learning environments and increase energy efficiency.

Updating educational facilities and technology to ensure students are prepared for high demand jobs of the 21st century, especially careers in emerging technologies and STEM.

Making all buildings, classrooms, and facilities accessible to people with disabilities.

Upgrading technology to help students prepare for 21st century jobs and transfer to 4-year universities.

What are the Next Steps?The West Valley-Mission Community College District is considering placing a local higher education funding measure on the June 2012 ballot at $350 million dollars. The bond tax rate is $16.25 per $100,000 property assessment.

A recently commissioned independent survey of constituents in our district shows strong potential community support for such a measure, with as much as 66% saying they would vote for it - well above 55% threshold needed for passage.
