What does “farmgate” or “farm stand” mean?As the name implies, farm gate sales is a marketing strategy undertaken by the farmer whereby consumers come to the farm to buy produce and, in some cases, pick the produce themselves. Examples include vegetables, eggs meat, berries, fruits, flowers as well as numerous handmade crafts and processed foods. In general, there is no limit to the type of items that can be marketed in this manner as long as there are willing buyers.

Why should you call ahead to visit a farm?Most farmers are busy being farmers. Their days are full of farm responsibilities from seeding, transpanting, harvesting to tending to livestock. Farmers also have families to take care of as well as business responsibilities. Not all farms are open to customers everyday. Many have designated days and times during the day to drop by the farm. It is always best to call the farm ahead of time to ensure someone will be there, as well as to know what products are available.
