Selfie Caption Contest #TheVETsOur Drop-in Centre is located in LBY 202. It is open Monday-Friday 10:30am-1:30pm and 3pm-6pm.

The WAP is located in LBY 205. It is open (by appointment only) Monday-Friday 10am-12:30pm and 3pm-5:00pm.

The RAP and SAP are located in MLLC 1 on the second floor of the library. SAP runs Monday-Friday 10:30am-1:30pm and 3pm-5pm. RAP runs Monday-Friday 5pm-6pm. Both of these services require you to preregister on Moodle.

Culture CornerWhy do Americans celebrate Thanksgiving?

When most people think about Thanksgiving, they think about eating. Whether it is a turkey or pumpkin

pie, food is the main thing many foreigners know about this holiday.

However, that is not the main point of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is meant to be a time to celebrate plentiful harvests and all the things we are thankful for. In the US it actually dates back to the pilgrims who first settled the newly discovered continent (in the 1600s). The first winter was very hard so when the pilgrims learned how to survive by growing and catching food the

next year from the Native Americans, they celebrated the collection of the food with a big feast and festival.

Celebrations were sporadic after that, and varied from state to state. It wouldn’t become a national holiday until President Abraham Lincoln declared it’s celebration on the last Thursday of November in 1863. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt would change it to the fourth Thursday of November, the modern date of the holiday. We still celebrate t o d a y with a big feast, grateful for all we have.

ELSS Newsletter November 2015

During the month of November, the VETs are holding a Selfie Caption Contest. We are asking students to come up with a creative caption for a selfie they have taken with the VETs, and submit it to cealelss@gmail.com. All pictures and captions should be recieved by November 13th at 5:00pm. After that, they will be posted on the CEAL ELSS Facebook page. The owner of the picture with the most likes between November 16 and 27 will win a T-shirt!

What exactly is a caption? A caption is a title or explanation for a picture (or illustration). Sometimes this can be simple, like “Picture of the VETs and students at Pitch Perfect 2 movie night.” Sometimes it can be silly, like “Daniel takes a shaky selfie at Pitch Perfect movie.” Or it can be a bit of both, “Shaky selfie captures a Pitch Perfect night!” Be creative! Don’t have a selfie? It’s not too late to attend a service and take one!
