Kevin Kenney We read in today’s Gospel Jesus saying in response to the question about paying the census tax, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” First of all, I hope you have responded to the Census 2020. The Census is very important because it can shape many different aspects of our community. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year. It impacts school lunches, plans for highways, support for firefighters, families in need and much more. The results determine how many seats in Congress each state gets. Census results affect our community every day. The Census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The U.S. has counted its population every 10 years since 1790. Be sure to be counted! October is census month in the Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis. The numbers reported help the Archdiocese in its strategic planning as well as in placing priests in parishes. This year the numbers may be a little skewed but they are still important. I hope we are able to count all who watch us virtually! We are approaching election day and again this year we are bombarded with a multitude of ads, debates, theories, and questions. How have you been forming your consciences as Catholics and as Christians? Do you find yourselves being informed or have you given up the challenge because it seems like it is going nowhere? People have muted the commercials, turned off the debates, stopped watching the news. What is a person to do? Where is God in all this? Is God even part of our decision process? Have you brought your formation before God? Have you asked God for input? Our consciences need to be formed and we do so by seeking good resources put out by the Conference of Catholic Bishops, Minnesota Catholic Conference, Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. The issues are important and our nation is challenged. 2020 has proved to be a challenging year and this election is very important. So many have requested absentee ballots, mine sits on my desk. We are challenged yet we are hopeful. Your vote counts. Bring God into the election by participating in your civic duty and being a voice for the voiceless, the unborn, the freedom of our nation and the future for our younger generations! Hopefully we have been able to understand the words of Paul to the Philippians today, “For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.” We have a few more weeks of this liturgical year, five weeks to be exact, how has the Gospel of Matthew affected your life? Have you taken the power and conviction of Jesus’ word and allowed the Holy Spirit to open your hearts and minds to live into these words, parables, and teachings? Isaiah writes, “It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other.” How is this playing out in our world today? Why do we not hear of God and God’s glory and seek God’s healing from illness and division in the public realm? Many kings throughout scriptures called for repentance and fasting, recognizing God’s power and compassion. Have we forgotten? Have we over the years placed God on the shelf, in a box or even erased God’s name from public realm? God continues to be present in our world. Spend time praying today’s psalm, Psalm 96, “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. Tell his glory among the nations. among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.” Where is God in all this? God is close at hand. Be open to the Holy Spirit who confirms with strength and walk with Jesus who carries us in difficult times. Continue to pray the rosary, asking our Mother to intercede for us to break down the walls of division, discord, racism, lack of trust and to find peace in these days. May we give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God! 215 SOUTH 8TH ST, MINNEAPOLIS, MN 55402
