For further information : www.adhd-aberdeen.org.uk What is ADD and ADHD? ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are recognised medical conditions which affect the functioning of certain areas of the brain. The key features can be a combination of: Inattention Impulsivity Hyperactivity ADD and ADHD may have other accompanying conditions such as: Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Speech & Language Disorder,Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and/or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. ADD/ADHD What is the Impact? ADD/ADHD is a long term complex condition that affects learning and behaviour right through school days and beyond. Individuals with ADD/ADHD can succeed in life. For a child to achieve his/her full potential it is important that there is early identification so that support, whether behavioural, psychological and/or medical can be put in place. Some children may be prescribed medication. (For further information see SIGN Guidelines, www.sign.ac.uk) ADHD – A CHILD’S VIEW I run around, I can’t sit still You think I only do my will, Speaking, I just don’t stop, My mind is always on the hop, I run I climb, I fidget all the time, Danger means nothing to me, I don’t understand you see, I get angry and upset, You don’t understand me and I fret, At school I’m picked on, ‘Cos I can’t get the work done, I’m teased and told I’m thick, Why can’t they see I’m sick, Hyperactive, yes that’s me, But I’m not bad, can’t you see, Friends are few and far between, People with me don’t want to be seen, So the next time you see me running wild, Stop and think I could just as easily be your child! Anne Mathers “What should I do if I think a child or young person may have ADD/ADHD?” If you suspect that a child may have ADD/ADHD you may wish to alert the parent/carer/teacher so that the child can be referred to the school doctor or family GP leading to referral for diagnosis.
