Strategies & Tactics

CAMP UHURU

The UC Santa Barbara Black

Student Union demanded change

to create a better learning envi-

ronment for Black students and

the administration responded.

Both parties peacefully collabo-

rated to create a better learning

environment for Black students.

In an effort to develop new and

innovative plans to recruit and

retain Black faculty, the Black

Student Union, with help from

our trusted advisors, proposed

a visiting Professorship in the

Black Studies Department, a

two-year Post-Doctoral fellow-

ship housed in the Center for

Black Studies Research, and an

increase in funding for the Cen-

ter for Black Studies Research

Dissertation Scholars’ program.

Two more UC student govern-

ments have divested their funds

from the Prison Industrial Com-

plex (PIC) during winter quarter:

UCLA and UC Irvine.

The PIC is the system of pri-

YDWHSULVRQFRUSRUDWHVWKDWSUR¿Wfrom Mass Incarceration, but

also uses monies to lobby elected

RI¿FLDOVIRUKDUVKHUSROLFLHVWKDWfurther criminalize and ware-

house Afrikan people, people of

color, and low- and no-income

people.

On Thursday, February 13,

UC Irvine’s student government

voted to divest funds.

UCLA’s student government

vote to divest on February 4.

In spring 2013, UC Berkeley

and UC Santa Barbara success-

fully passed resolutions to divest

student funds from the PIC.

In upcoming weeks, other UC

Davis and UC Riverside also

consider similar resolutions.

While the individual campus

student governments’ prison in-

vestments ranged in the hundreds

of thousands, the University of

California’s $82 billion endow-

ment includes over $1.5 billion

in investments.

In the 1980s, UC students led

a successful movement to divest

funds from the racist Apartheid

government of South Africa.
