Reflections for The Epiphany of the Lord

The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt. Matthew’s Gospel tells a version of Jesus’ birth that is different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke’s Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew’s Gospel.

We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles’ search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus.

We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is presented as representative of Jesus’ kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus’ death.

The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ’s early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana. Loyola Press

It is hard to believe that one year has ended and another has begun. Some people may remember this past year with great fondness and are eager to start this year with resolutions abounding. Others may be rather shocked that we are still in the same place in our family or work life and are eagerly ready to chart a different path at the start of this year.

Wherever we find ourselves, we certainly know that a new year often brings resolutions that many of us choose to make. We are probably also aware, that the resolutions we make at the start of a year are not typically something that lasts throughout the year. However, the beginning of a year gives us a chance to examine our state in life once again. What blessings were bestowed upon this past year or what blessings did we miss. What do we hope for at the start of this year? Where have we been and where are going in regards to our faith, family, work and community.

We must always ask ourselves these important questions. Our Catholic faith: How seriously have we been practicing our faith and striving to influence the world around us with that faith. Do we know our faith and are we bringing it with us into the world so that we can be a witness for others to see? Our family: Are we striving to make our family a place where we care for one another in order to help each person reach the potential that they have been given. For parents this is obviously of the utmost importance as the primary models of what it means to be a person of faith living in an increasingly secular world. Our work: If we are working or retired, how are we using the gifts God has given us to make a contribution to the world around us through our witness of faith? Our community: We encounter one another in our families and in our work; however, we also know that we live in a community. What are we doing to influence the community around us with our faith so that the Church can continue to grow and expand in the local community in which we live.

We ask these questions at the start of a year, however, these are questions we ask all throughout the year. While we may strive to make changes in our lives at the start of a year, yet, we also know that the world around us continues on its path. What have we done, and what are we doing, as a people of faith to influence and change the world the world in which we live.

BLESS YOUR DOOR ON EPIPHANY

The gospel tells us that the magi found Christ “on entering the house.” The door to your home is a holy threshold. You can bless those who come in and go out by inscribing above the door in chalk the first two numbers of the year +C+M+B+ the last two numbers of the year. (20+C+M+B+19) Tradition tells us that the letters stand for the names of the magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Adolph Adam points out that it may also mean “Christus mansionem benedicat” or “May Christ bless this dwelling.” It’s appropriate to bless your door in January—janua means “door” and the first month is the door to the New Year. After inscribing the doorway, say this prayer:

God of Bethlehem and Cana,God of Jordan’s leaping waters,

in baptism you bring usinto your family.

You wed us and embrace usas your beloved.

May we fill this placewith kindness to one another,

with hospitality to guests, and with abundant care

for every stranger.By the gentle light of a star,

guide home all who seek youon paths of faith, hope and love. Then we will join the angels in

proclaiming your praise:Glory in heaven and peace on earth,

now and forever. Amen.

Then sing a Christmas carol.

MUSIC MINISTRY CONCERT Once again, our Music Ministry Christmas Concert, under the direction of Natalya Bencivenga was a huge success. This very talented group of people never disappoints us. Thank you for a beautiful afternoon of music. We sing praise to you!!!

BEGINNING 2019 The Prayer to St. Michael will be said immediately after the final Blessing and Dismissal at all weekend and daily Masses as part of our prayer for healing in our Church. The prayer can be found on the back cover of the missalettes. Friday Eucharistic Adoration will take place immediately following the 7:30 AM daily Mass in the Rectory chapel. This will be in addition to the current first Friday Adorations every month. Sign-up sheets for Adoration coverage will be available in the chapel and the church; the response will determine how long Adoration can take place. Also as part of our prayer for healing, it is a special opportunity to spend some time

before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

“LORD GIVE ME PATIENCE. NOW”

Followers of Jesus are called to treat everyone with love. Yet many of us find that it is hard to be patient with others, but patience is a key ingredient necessary to showing love. To acquire it, practice makes patience.Exercise.Patience is like a muscle. We need to exercise it every day, but in a society of instant everything, we are losing opportunities. Find ways to practice such as reading a book all the way through without skipping to the end. Plant a seed and care for it until it blooms. Cook from scratch. Then patience will be available when you need it.Learn your warning signs.Take note of events that make your heart race, your palms sweat, or your breath quicken so that you can identify and anticipate challenges to your patience before they happen.Flip it around.Impatience with others often comes from imposing our ideas on them. What if you were expected to live or act according to someone else’s ideas or opinions? You probably wouldn’t like it. Try practicing acceptance of others instead.Step out of it.Often we get annoyed because we assume what others do is meant to offend. In fact, it is likely that others’ actions are intended to be personal. Give people the benefit of the doubt from the first.
