IIINTRODUCTIONNTRODUCTIONNTRODUCTION CCCOOO---CCCURRICULARSURRICULARSURRICULARS ATATAT WWWHEATONHEATONHEATON AAACADEMYCADEMYCADEMY While Wheaton Academy places an important emphasis on high academicstandards, it is also deeply committed to providing lifeshaping, cocurricularexperiences.We believe a comprehensive high school educationmeans learningbothinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.Mostofuscanprobablyattesttothetruthofthisassertionfromourownlives.Accordingly,WheatonAcademyworkshardtocreatehigh impactopportunitiesoutsideof the classroom.WheatonAcademy isoneofthefewhighschoolsinAmericathathasmorethana3:1cocurricularratio(over2,200spotsfor650students).Althoughacademictrainingreceivedintheclassroomisabsolutelyessential,manyimportantdevelopmentalgoalsarereinforcedorreachedmoreeffectivelythroughcocurricularactivities.Givingourstudentsopportunitiestodevelopselfconfidence,practicesocialcooperationandleadershipskills,explorevariousareasofgiftedness,experiencesafefailure,makedecisionsandsolverealproblemsinanunpredictableandchangingenvironmentarecriticalcomponentsofeducation.Asparentswemaywonderifallthetimeourstudentsspendpracticingontheathleticfield,travelingontours,participatinginclubs,orvolunteeringisworthit.TheanswerisabsolutelyYES!Students involved in cocurricular activities often attain higher academicGPAsthanthosenotinvolved.Researchshowsastrongcorrelationbetweenparticipationinhigh school and success in careers and contributions to community.Collegeslook carefully at the variety and blend of interests and experiences high schoolstudentshavedemonstrated.Highschoolstudentswhoareinvolvedaregenerallyhappierandhealthier.Mostimportantly,webelieveGodoftenusesthevarietyofcocurricularexperiencestorevealstudentsgiftsandabilitiesthatotherwisemightnothavebeendetected,affirmed,andnurturedintheclassroomsetting.Wetrustthefollowinginformationwillbeahelpfulguideforstudentsandparentsastheymakeinformeddecisionswhilecreatingahealthymixoflifeimpacting,cocurricularexperiencesatWheatonAcademy.

Someclasseshaverequiredafterschoolactivitieswhichmayappeartobecocurricular,butinfact,areapartoftheclasscurriculum.Someoftheseclassesinclude:band,orchestra,percussionensemble,mensensemble,womenschorale,andconcertchoir.Ifyourstudentisinterestedintheseopportunities,pleasecheckthecurriculumguideformorespecificinformation.
