What’s your Take?Make your summer all it can be by regularly

visiting local business districts. Which town event do you enjoy most?

• A 2010 graduate, Haddonfield’s NATALIE BRANIN will head off to

Syracuse University in the fall. Natalie’s favorite borough event

is “probably the Fourth of July Parade.”

• Haddon Township’s ALEX MEIER replied, “Definitely the Block Party ... it really brings people together.” To read about Haddon Township’s Block Party, go to page 21.

• A lifeguard at Haddon Township’s Crystal Lake Pool, MOLLY BARBIERI revealed, “I always loved going to the pool during the summer months, but working at the pool is even better.”

• Four-year-old twins CEARA and TERENCE McNALLY, of

Haddonfield, are pictured enjoying Crystal Lake Pool

with their nanny KACY ALESTRA.

Ceara and Terence loved watching the

borough’s Fourth of July fireworks with

their parents. “They were really loud ... I liked the pink ones,”

said Ceara. “I liked the white ones,” added Terence.

• Bothers SHANE (3) and STEPHEN (5) absolutely love hanging out at Crystal Lake Pool during the summer. According to their mother Mary, “Their favorite Haddon Township event is the Halloween Parade, especially when candy is thrown!” Stephen recalled that last year

he was a bat and his younger brother was Thomas the Train.

• The Public Library Director, BOB HUNTER is looking forward

to the annual Haddon Heights Fall Craft Festival Craft and Corvette

Show. “I love seeing all of my old friends and the food vendors ...

it’s also the only time I get to eat fried Oreos and hot dogs!” Bob

admitted. Turn to page 15 for details about this year’s festival.

revisit a classic Members of the Community Theatre are gearing up to present Twelve Angry Men, at the Community Center in late-July. Set in the 1950’s, Twelve Angry Men is an examination of a group of jurors, brought together to deliberate an open-and-shut case. Entrusted with the power to send a teenager to the electric chair for killing his father, the jurors are confined to a small jury room until they reach a unanimous decision. The play examines the men’s personalities, prejudices, biases, indifference, anger, judgments, cultural differences, ignorance, and fears. These traits hamper the jurors’ decision-making abilities, causing them to ignore the case’s real issues. Directed by Melinda Matula, the play’s cast includes John Dunn, Tom Geigel, Scott Harris, Chuck Jackson, Peter Jackson, Ron Kelly, Tom Lorenz, Mike Marotta, Tom Matula, Bob Middleton, Dave Routzahn, Chris Scola, and Mike Smith. Performances will take place Thu Jul 29 thru Sat Jul 31 at 7:30 pm. Tickets, available at the door, are $15; $10 for seniors and students. [email protected]

Building an addition in front of the Public Library building would be a huge mistake, for many reasons. The Commissioners and the community need not make such a mistake, because an alternative site for a new library is available. In a report dated June 2010, a blue-ribbon committee concluded that the Allen Avenue Parking Lot is “worthy of serious consideration.” We, the undersigned residents of Haddonfield, hereby petition the Commissioners – before deciding to renovate the existing building and erect an addition in front of it – (a) to order an independent, detailed investigation and evaluation of the Allen Avenue site and (b) to commission the preparation of conceptual plans, with estimated costs, for at least two building configurations on that site.

Attention Haddonfield residents!tHiS iS it: OUr LASt CHANCe

FOr A Better LiBrArY On June 9, the Borough’s library architect presented four options to the community:• Option 1: Renovation to make the existing building ADA-compliant.• Option 2: As above, plus alterations to improve functionality.• Option 3: Renovation as above, plus an addition of 8,360 sqft in front of the existing building.• Option 4: Renovation as above, plus an addition of 13,800 sqft in front of the existing building. Option 4 consumes so much open space in front of the building that it has been universally rejected. It is believed that none of the commissioners favors this option. Option 3 takes up less open space, but still suffers from several fundamental problems. It destroys the view of a beloved, heritage-listed building and it is likely to be looked on unfavorably by the Haddonfield Historic Preservation Commission and the State Historic Sites Council. There is a widespread feeling that voters would give this proposal the “thumbs down.” It is believed that at least two of the commissioners do not favor this option. Option 2 (“ADA Plus”) would improve the functionality of the building and make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, but would add just 5 sqft of programmatic space. That’s a better library? Option 1 (“ADA”) would make the building ADA-compliant, but that’s all. That’s a better library? Mayor Colombi is on record* as saying, “I personally believe that our community wants and needs a better library and that such a library will require either an addition to the existing building or a new building.” She is believed to be less than enthusiastic about Option 3. And Options 2 and 1 will not give us “a better library.” Commissioner Borden is on record* as saying, “We ... need to bring [the existing building] up to current standards of functionality, usability, safety and handicapped accessibility.” If he comes to the conclusion that Option 3 is likely to go down in a referendum, he may well decide in favor of “ADA Plus.” Commissioner Kasko is on record* as saying, “[W]e can and should improve the library we have, bring it up-to-date on safety codes, make it handicapped accessible, expand its size and usefulness, and make needed repairs.” He is well aware of his constituency’s position on spending public money on this project, so his preference is predictable: “ADA.” Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. By two votes to one ... [drum roll] ... “ADA Plus”! But what if a referendum on “ADA Plus” were to fail? (Advocates of a better library might vote against it, out of disgust. Advocates of spending the minimum might vote against it, preferring the less-expensive “ADA” option.) Acknowledging that possibility, the commissioners might simply implement the “ADA” option, sans a referendum. (They could take the view that the Borough must, by law, bring the building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Even if voters said “no” to “ADA,” the Borough would have to do the work anyway, or risk being sued. So why waste money on a referendum?) the prospect seems gloomy. But it’s not. There is an alternative – Option 5 – that will enable our community to have a library that meets its wants and needs, at a reasonable cost. The answer is a new, designed-to-suit building in the Allen Avenue parking lot. As more and more residents become aware of this alternative, more and more come to the same conclusion that a Sites Study Committee (led by Commissioner Borden) did – the Allen Avenue site is “worthy of serious consideration.”

Haddonfield has a simple, stark choice: An inadequate library (“ADA” or “ADA Plus”) or a better library (Allen Avenue). Which would YOU prefer? Which would YOU vote for? Which will it be?

* Candidates’ answers to the question “Should Haddonfield build a new library?” posed by the Haddonfield Sun during the 2009 election campaign. Written and published by David Hunter: [email protected]

fall ball Registration is open for the Little League’s Fall Baseball season. Players of all fall sports are invited to par-ticipate, as are players from other towns who wish to play on a Had-donfield team. When registering, indicate a player’s addi-tional activities because games are scheduled to minimize conflicts with other fall sports. The season will run from Labor Day thru the end of October. Sign-up for the following: • Little League – The divisions are Machine Pitch (eight-year-olds), Minors (nine- and ten-year-olds), and Majors (11- and 12-year-olds). The cost is $100 per player in the Machine Pitch and Minors and $125 per player in the Majors. Parents registering siblings will receive a $10 discount. The fee includes a game jersey, hat, an approximately 18-game schedule, and play-offs. • Babe Ruth – Players who will be between 13- and 16-years-old in spring 2011 will be placed in the 13-year-old, 14-year-old, or 15- to 16-year old divisions. Haddonfield will be joining the Tri-State Elite League (TSE). The cost is $150 per player and includes umpire and TSE fees. Babe Ruth players are required to own a pro-style mesh game jersey, which is reusable for all spring and fall teams. A one-time additional fee of $65 will be assessed for those that don’t already have a game jersey. To register, visit haddonfieldbaseball.org and sign-up by Sun Aug 1. Space is limited and late registrants will be charged a $25 fee. Details: [email protected] or [email protected].

Slurpees for safety Kids can chill out with ice-cold Slurpees if they play it safe. The Police De-partment has partnered with 7-Eleven owner, Mir Sajid, to reward children and teens who wear helmets while riding bikes this summer. Officers will present bike riders they spot wearing helmets with coupons that can be redeemed for free Slurpees at the Haddonfield 7-Eleven (615 Haddon Ave). Children shouldn’t approach police officers seeking coupons. State law requires bikers 17-years-old and younger to wear a helmet. If caught without appropriate safety gear, kids could receive a court sum-mons. The good news? Riders spotted not wearing a helmet will be given 10% off coupons for bike helmets and safety equipment from Sports Author-ity and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
