The Hepworth Wakefield is delighted to present a new work by 2012 Turner Prize nominee Luke Fowler. The Poor Stockinger, the Luddite Cropper and the Deluded Followers of Joanna Southcott focuses on the work of the Marxist historian Edward Palmer Thompson, who from 1946, at the age of 24, was employed by the Workers’ Education Association (WEA) to teach literature and social history to adults in the industrial towns of the West Riding. These classes provided education to people who had been historically unable to access a university education.

The film captures a moment of optimism, in which E.P. Thompson’s ideas for progressive education came together with those of the West Riding and its existing tradition of political resistance and activism.

Fowler’s new film draws together archival material from television, the University of Leeds and the Workers’ Education Association. These archival documents are set against present-day film footage and sounds gathered by the artist on location in the former West Riding region of Yorkshire. Fowler has worked in collaboration with acclaimed American independent filmmaker Peter Hutton and Yorkshire-born writer/filmmaker George Clark.

The work will become part of the Wakefield Permanent Art Collection and is the first moving image work to enter the collection.

Commissioned by The Hepworth Wakefield, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Film and Video Umbrella, through the Contemporary Art Society Annual Award: commission to collect.

Richard Long (born Bristol, 1945) is one of the UK’s most significant artists. He has been at the forefront of British art for over forty years, pioneering new art forms through an exploration of landscape as both medium and subject of his work. This exhibition will present works from across Long’s career, which are drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection and National Museum Wales. It includes early photographs of his sculptures in the landscape such as A Line Made by Walking, 1967, the flattened grass line a result of the artist repeatedly walking a straight line in a field, and later sculptures made for galleries, such as Cornish Slate Ellipse, 2009. Long has also made two new works for The Hepworth Wakefield, a wall work and a proto-type grass sculpture in the gallery grounds.

Long has stated that it was his intention ‘to make a new way of walking: walking as art.’ He has continued to develop this idea, manifesting the walks as art in three ways: maps, photographs and text works. Each walk expresses a particular idea, such as walking in a straight line for a predetermined distance or walking between the sources of rivers. Sculptures occur either in the landscape, made along the way on a walk, or in the gallery, made as a response to a particular place.

These new collection displays look at post-war British art, examining a shift in attitude towards making as well as a radical new approach to the human body.

At the Venice Biennale in 1952 eight young sculptors including Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler and Bernard Meadows, were chosen to represent Britain alongside Henry Moore. This younger generation of artists preferred to work in metal, using casting, welding and assemblage to describe the human body. The body became elongated, distorted and reduced, observed in its basic form to become exposed and vulnerable. The human body was shown as animal or insect-like; claws, beaks and antennae conveying powerful feelings of primal anxiety, protection and aggression.

For painters such as Frank Auerbach and David Bomberg paint became a material with which to express the physical and emotional presence of the body, describing form through thick lumpy layers and paint-loaded brushstrokes. For other painters such as Prunella Clough and Jack Smith the human figure was portrayed within ordinary working or domestic scenes asserting an art of more common shared experience. At the centre of these radical shifts in British art was the work of Francis Bacon whose unmistakable visceral imagery embodied a loss of humanity and claustrophobic isolation.

These displays place works from the Wakefield Permanent Art Collection in a wider context, using loans from national collections at Tate and the Arts Council as well as from private collections.

GALLERY GARDEN

The displays in gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. This gallery introduces The Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s working models on permanent display in gallery 5. The gift is a remarkable collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures, generously given by the Hepworth Family through the Art Fund.

To celebrate the launch of The Hepworth Wakefield back in May 2011 Heather and Ivan Morison repositioned and modified The Black Cloud in response to the architectural and industrial backdrop of the gallery. Now, to mark the passing of one year, The Black Cloud has undergone further transformation and wild plants, ferns and grasses have begun to slowly occupy the structure. Continuing the Morison’s interest in science fiction and the distortion of time in storytelling, the Morison’s have imagined a potential future for The Black Cloud. Yorkshire in Pictures highlights Wakefield’s collection of architectural and landscape works, including the Gott Collection, which comprises ten volumes of images of 18th and 19th century Yorkshire. Hepworth and St Ives looks at the combination of innovative artists and inspiring landscapes that led to the development of a particularly British abstraction and St Ives becoming an internationally significant centre for the development of post war contemporary art.

In the late 1940s Barbara Hepworth embarked on a series of studies of the operating theatre at the invitation of her friend, the surgeon Norman Capener. These remarkable drawings demonstrate Hepworth’s consummate skill as a draftsperson and the synergy she felt between her work as a sculptor and the surgeon’s craft. For the first time, over 40 of these works have been drawn together in a touring exhibition and accompanied by a publication that illustrates all known drawings by Hepworth in this field.
