Michael Kneebone, director of business development at New Zealand Bloodstock, told ANZ Bloodstock News that while the number of lots catalogued is down on last year he is confident that the quality is superior.

“The numbers are fewer that last year but the quality is up,” Kneebone said. “We were very busy last Sunday and it has been steady since. All the right people are here, trainers from Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. Macau is interesting because we have operated on-line bidding [in Macau] in the past but those buyers are here in person this year.

“Our Australian friends have cottoned on too. I have seen a number of trainers from Australia.

“Our vendors are also learning what sells and appear to have fine-tuned their operations, knowing what buyers want.

“So, we have high hopes for a good sale and the signs are positive,” he continued.

New benchmarks were set at last year’s sale with an aggregate of NZ$28,393,000 with 294 horses sold over the two days of the sale. The average climbed to NZ$96,575, surpassing the 2015 record of

NZ$92,002 by five per cent, while the median increased to NZ$70,000, up 17 per cent from the record of NZ$60,000 set at the 2014 and 2015 sale.

Curraghmore has a draft of six juveniles in the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale including a brother to Lindsay Park-trained dual Group Two winner and Group One-placed three-year-old filly Formality (Fastnet Rock).

Catalogued as Lot 174, the colt is the fifth foal out of 2009 Singapore Horse of the Year Jolie’s Shinju (Jolie’s Halo), with her first four foals all winners including last start Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter Formality.

By Coolmore Stud-based stallion Fastnet Rock (Danehill), the colt breezed up in 10.43 seconds at Te Rapa on 17 October.

Curraghmore is also offering a colt from the first crop of Newgate Farm-based stallion Sizzling (Snitzel), a colt by fellow Group One-winning freshman stallion Shamexpress (O’Reilly) as well as colts by Camelot (Montjeu), Cape Blanco (Galileo) and He’s Remarkable (Pentire).

Belmont Farm will offer a half-sister by Rock ‘N’ Pop (Fastnet Rock) to the Allan Sharrock-trained multiple Group One winner Kawi (Savabeel) who breezed up in 10.96 seconds.

From the second crop of young Waikato Stud-based stallion Rock ‘N’ Pop, who won the 2011 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton, the filly is the eighth living foal out of the unraced Volksraad (Green Desert) mare Magic Time.

<< Continued from page 2 Catalogued as Lot 219, the filly was purchased by Anzac Lodge for NZ$40,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale earlier this year from the Seaton Park draft.

Dean Hawthorne of Belmont Farm said the half-sister to four winners, including the six-time Group One winner Kawi, would have a residual value as a broodmare once she had finished racing.

“The filly has tremendous residual value being a half to Kawi and the partnership asked themselves why they were selling, especially once we got her moving along,” said Hawthorne.

“We had a round table discussion and she is here to be sold, there is no doubt about that. She is doing everything right.”

Belmont Farm will also offer one of three lots by the late Rich Hill Stud stallion Pentire (Be My Guest), who died on Monday.

They include Lot 97, the only filly catalogued at the sale by the late son of Be My Guest (Northern Dancer).

The filly is out of the winning Catcher In The Rye (Danehill) mare Downloaded, herself a half-sister Thriller (Volksraad), who won the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and the Magic Millions Classic Stakes (RL, 1200m) in 1997.

The other two lots by the late sire will also be offered today, a colt and a gelding.

The first lot by the stallion due through the ring is Lot 88, a colt out of winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Devant, who will be offered as part of the Diamond Lodge draft. The colt breezed in a time of 11.52.

Devant is out of Group Two winner Frenetic (Truly Vain), who also produced stakes-winning Mustaagel (Pentire), the colts three-quarters brother.

The last of the trio due to go under the hammer is the Tom Lane Equine consigned gelding, who is catalogued as Lot 191.

The 16 August-foaled gelding, who breezed in a time of 12.00, is out of the Listed-placed mare Ky’s The Limit (Bertolini), a half-sister to the Listed-winning Richracer (Pentire).

This spring, the Lisa Latta-trained Dijon Bleu (Burgundy) has emerged as a top-class filly, winning three races of her last five starts including the Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and finished runner-up in last Saturday’s New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Dijon Bleu’s performances, which includes a victory at two, has enhanced the credentials of her juvenile half-brother by Shocking (Street Cry) who will be offered as Lot 300 tomorrow by Landsdowne Park.

The colt, who breezed up in 10.94 seconds, is the fifth foal out of the unraced Prestino (More Than Ready), herself a half-sister to Group Two winner So Pristine (Zabeel) and Singapore Listed winner Restored (Red Ransom).

Pristino has had three foals to race for three winners, including Dijon Bleu who has been spelled since her Group One placing at Riccarton on Saturday.

Dave Duley of Landsdowne Park told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that the colt had been very popular during the

Page 4: What's On · NZB Ready To Run Sale gets underway at Karaka | 3 | Wednesday 22 November 2017 Continued on. page 4>>

inspections and was very confident he will sell well tomorrow.

“The Shocking half brother to Dijon Bleu is proving very popular. There are only two by Shocking in the sale and we have them both,” said Dudley.

“I sold Dijon Bleu and he walks just like her but probably has more substance. He breezed up well. The Iffraaj colt, Lot 257, also breezed well and he looks like a Derby type and interestingly was bred by Goodwood, who bred Gingernuts, and he's ginger!”

Landsdowne Park will offer ten lots over the two days and Duley said that the colt by Tavistock (Montjeu), who breezed in 11.09 and is catalogued as Lot 30, had also attracted a lot of interest.

“The colt by Tavistock, has also created a lot of interest,” said Duley. “He had a good breeze up and he's one the earlier lots, so we'll see how things go from there.”

Meanwhile, Wellfield Lodge have 15 lots catalogued to sell over two days of the sale and Bill Gleeson told ANZ Bloodstock News that he expected Lot 203 to be popular.

The colt by Husson (Hussonet) is out of Group Three winner Leveller (Redoute’s Choice) making him a brother to ATC Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winning filly Frolic, who also finished runner-up behind She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) in the last season’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The colt clocked a time of 11.35 in the breeze-ups.

“We have had much interest in Lot 203 as his sister, Frolic, won the Reisling Stakes and then ran second in the Golden Slipper earlier this year,” said Gleeson. “He has two-year-old written all over him.”

Gleeson said he also had high hopes for Lot 352, a brother to Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1340m) winner Waldorf (Highly Recommended).

By the promising second crop stallion Highly Recommended (Fastnet Rock), the colt is also a half-brother to CJC Winter Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Timy Tyler (No Excuse Needed) being the sixth foal out of the unraced mare Skite (Pins), herself a half-sister to the Listed-placed Tears’n’triumph (O’Reilly).

Waldorf, who was trained by Andrew Campbell, has been sent to continue his career in Hong Kong since his Wanganui Guineas victory on 13 September.

The colt was purchased by Exempt Bloodstock for NZ$30,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale earlier this year and breezed up in 11.37 seconds at Te Rapa.

“Waldorf's brother is just as big and strong, a true scopey type with a good attitude. Lot 338, the Exceed And Excel, could provide a quick return,” said Gleeson. “He looks like a genuine two year old. The Tavistock filly will take a little time but could be a nice staying three year old.”

The Ready To Run Sale has produced 12 individual Group One winners in the past five years including 2015 Te Akau Racing-purchased graduates Gingernuts (Iffraaj), who was sold for NZ$42,500, and Hall Of Fame (Savabeel).

Hall Of Fame, who won the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) last January, was purchased by David Ellis’s Te Akau Racing for NZ$230,000 from the Lyndhurst Farm draft. Hall Of Fame has since been sold to race in Hong Kong.

Another graduate from the Ready To Run Sale is recent Wakeful

Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Luvaluva (Mastercraftsman), who was purchased by trainer John Sargent for NZ$55,000 from the Surrey Farm draft in 2016.

The talented staying filly’s half-brother by Per Incanto (Street Cry) is also being offered by Surrey Farm as Lot 424 on day two of the sale.

The colt is the fifth foal out of the unraced mare Wansesingyee (Galileo), who is a three-quarters sister to W J McKell Cup (Listed, 2400m) winner Luvuleo (Galileo), and breezed up in 11.55 seconds.

Emily Holmes of Surrey Farm told ANZ Bloodstock News that she expected him to be well received, especially after the significant pedigree update courtesy of Luvaluva’s win in the Wakeful Stakes.

“Being late in the sale we expect that he'll be out of his box more tomorrow,” said Holmes. “He breezed up well and is quite the professional. Being a half-brother to recent stakes winner Luvaluva should help.”

Surrey Farm will offer a small but select draft of three after one was withdrawn, and Holmes said she was particularly looking forward to seeing Lot 291 enter the ring tomorrow.

The colt is by Arrowfield Stud’s sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and is out of the winning Stravinsky (Nureyev) mare Precious Time, who is a sister to Group Three winner Estelle Collection, the dam of multiple Group One winner Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice), the colt’s three-quarters brother.

“He has the potential to be one of the most sought after lots, being a brother in blood to Lankan Rupee,” said Holmes. “Australians could buy him as a stallion prospect. Sons of Redoute’s Choice have been enormously successful at stud."

“We have just three to offer but they all have strong credentials,” Holmes continued.

Day one of the NZB Ready To Run Sale starts at 11am today, while day two starts with Lot 221 at the same time tomorrow.

Black Heart Bart draws eightMultiple Group One winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) has been drawn in barrier eight for the $1,000,000 Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ascot on Saturday. The Darren Weir-trained seven-year-old gelding will be ridden by Brad Rawiller as he bids to secure a sixth victory at the highest level. His stablemate Ulmann (Sebring) has been drawn in barrier five, last year’s winner Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) has drawn barrier 13, while the Chris Waller-trained dual Group One runner-up Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) has been drawn in barrier one.

Art Series handed barrier nine

The Darren McAuliffe-trained Art Series (Sebring) has been drawn in barrier nine for the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ascot on Saturday. The filly took out the WA Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) over the same course and distance last weekend and will be ridden by former Hong Kong champion jockey Douglas Whyte in the $500,000 Group Two. The Grant and Alana Williams-trained pair Perfect Jewel (Redoute’s Choice) and Arcadia Prince (Pierro) have drawn barriers 16 and 13 respectively, while the recent Fairetha Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner Money Maher (Al Maher) has drawn barrier 11.

Grey Lion ready for Ballarat assaultTrainer Matt Cumani is hopeful of a big run from Grey Lion (Galileo) in Saturday’s $300,000 Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2200m). The six-year-old entire was a good second behind Vengeur Masque (Monsun) in the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Flemington at his last start on 11 November, and his trainer believes he is still improving. "I think he's getting better and better with racing," Cumani said. "He really seems to be improving with every run so I'm hopeful that he's still improving into the Ballarat Cup."

Weir issues warning ahead of Soldier’s debutPremier Melbourne trainer Darren Weir has issued a warning ahead of Native Soldier’s (Sepoy) potential debut in the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat on Saturday. The colt, who will have to pass a random ballot to secure a start in the race, won a clockwise jumpout in Ballarat on 14 November but has reportedly shown quirks at home. "The Sepoy colt has trialled up really well and he's galloped well since but he's not an easy horse," Weir told Racing.com. "If he can hold it together on race day and begin well from the barrier - he's not great in the barriers - he can take up a forward position and he's going to run well."

Sadler’s Lake ready to make debut for SmerdonDual Group Three winner Sadler’s Lake (High Chaparral) will have his first start for trainer Robert Smerdon in a 1200 metre handicap at Ballarat on Saturday. The six-year-old was previously trained by Chris Waller and shaped with promise when second in a recent Cranbourne barrier trial. "His record would say he's better when he gets out to 1600, but his trials have been good," Smerdon told Racing.com. "It'll depend on where he draws and what lines up, but he's there to run well because he's had a couple of trials in the build up."

Morning Briefing

Gold Symphony to Recognition StakesThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Gold Symphony (Reward For Effort) will make his seasonal reappearance in the Recognition Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben on Saturday. The dual Group Three winner has been off the track since finishing fifth in the Winter Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1500m) at Rosehill in July but has warmed up for his return with two barrier trials, most recently finishing a close second over 1050 metres at Randwick. The gelding will be ridden by Damian Browne in the $100,000 Recognition Stakes.

Alsvin primed for city debutCranbourne-based trainer Shea Eden is looking forward to running the promising three-year-old Alsvin (Excelebration) over 1200 metres at Sandown Hillside today after the gelding made a winning debut at Sale last month. "I was pretty happy with him going into that run at Sale and he's a horse I earmarked quite early as a really progressive horse," Eden said. "I thought he was pretty green that day. When he got to the front he looked around and just did a bit wrong so we've gone with winkers tomorrow just to help him concentrate. He's a horse I've got a lot of time for. I think he's certainly going to measure up to better races."

Two-state options for Sugar SizzleThe promising Aquis Farm-raced Sugar Sizzle (Sizzling) could run in Sydney or Brisbane this weekend. The filly scored at the second attempt at Murwillumbah earlier this month, and trainer Angela Plumb has given the daughter of Sizzling (Snitzel) an entry in both the Golden Gift at Rosehill and a 2YO Maiden (1200m) at Doomben. "I'll wait and see how many have accepted right before they close just to see how many are in the field in Sydney," Plumb said.

Boom Time well ahead of Japan Cup

The Lindsay Park-trained Boom Time (Flying Spur) is reportedly in good shape as he gears up for a tilt at the Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) this weekend. The Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner galloped over 1400 metres yesterday, and stable representative Gary Fennessy said his preparation had gone smoothly so far. "He's been through the quarantine process and now we're down in Tokyo," Fennessy told Sydney's Sky Sports Radio. "He had his first serious hit-out this morning on the course proper and he did it very well."

Connections not ruling out fourth Cox Plate for WinxConnections of the champion mare Winx (Street Cry) have not ruled out a tilt at winning a fourth Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) next October. The mare’s owners and her trainer Chris Waller are weighing up a potential overseas campaign next year, and a decision on her future targets is expected to be made in the near future. "It's all to do with the timing," part-owner Peter Tighe told Sky Sports Radio. "If we're going overseas and then coming back, and if it's all possible to play it out and do that without stretching her too thin. "It's a huge temptation to take the world on. We know she's good enough and she'd certainly be competitive wherever she goes but we're still keen to race in Australia.”

Autumn Stakes target for VillermontAaron Purcell has earmarked the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on 10 February as the next big target for Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Villermont (All Too Hard). The exciting three-year-old has been sent for a spell following his victory in Saturday’s $250,000 race. "He's had a fairly

light spring, so he's still in great shape," Purcell told Racing.com. "He's gone for a spell now and we'll target the autumn with him. He'll head to the Autumn Stakes in February then off to the (Australian) Guineas in March."

McEvoy injured during trialsLeading Sydney-based jockey Kerrin McEvoy was injured at the Warwick Farm barrier trials yesterday, with severe bruising to his left hand forcing him to forego other rides at the trials. McEvoy’s mount in Heat 13, Lilakai (Al Maher), became fractious in the barriers and reared over to its side, squashing McEvoy’s left hand. He was examined by ambulance staff and was found to have sustained severe bruising to his hand and then stood down for the remaining heats.

Bailey to look into revised changes for HK ridersChief Racing Victoria steward Terry Bailey has announced plans to revise the current penalty structure for visiting jockeys from Hong Kong. Riders may be able to have penalties deferred in the wake of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's new policy for jockey’s riding overseas, an initiative that was introduced on Monday after Joao Moreira was forced to miss rides in Hong Kong after picking up an injury and a suspension in Australia. "I'll have some discussions," Bailey told Racing.com. "It's not of major urgency at the moment as we don't have to worry about it until the autumn, but I'll certainly have some dialogue with (HKJC head steward) Kim Kelly over the next few weeks to see where we land."

Supreme Court critical of PernaSupreme Court Justice Kevin Bell said Victorian racing integrity commissioner Sal Perna failed to ensure a reasonable apprehension of bias did not arise in his findings against former Racing Victoria (RV) chairman David Moodie, who Perna accused of leaking information during the cobalt investigations. Perna's investigation subsequently cleared Moodie of being the original source of the leak in January 2015 over the positive cobalt tests for horses in the care of Danny O'Brien and Mark Kavanagh, but the investigation found that he had disclosed important information and misled the RV Integrity Council and Board. Bell added there

had been a breach of the ‘rules of natural justice’ when Perna produced a public release on his findings.

Tasmania to host female jockey challengeTasmania is set to host the first Australian Female Jockey Championship at Launceston later this season. The meeting, to be held on 7 March, will feature two female jockeys from each state and one representing the Northern Territory in a four-race competition at the night fixture. "Racing has led the way in enabling females to compete equally with males and it is a testament to some of the female trailblazers of our sport," Tasracing chief executive officer Vaughn Lynch said. "The race meeting, held on the eve of International Women's Day on 8 March, will provide us with an opportunity to celebrate and promote female participation in thoroughbred racing."

Proven Thoroughbreds to sponsor Guy Walter StakesJamie Walter's Proven Thoroughbreds has secured sponsorship rights to the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), the race named in honour of his late brother. A multiple Group One-winning trainer, Guy Walter died suddenly in May 2014. The year after his death, the Australian Turf Club renamed the Wiggle Stakes to recognise Walter's contribution to New South Wales racing. "We've always wanted to sponsor a race and the Australian Turf Club has kindly helped facilitate this fitting synergy," Jamie Walter said. The Guy Walter Stakes will be run at Randwick on 3 March.

CRV signs off on successful 2016/17Country Racing Victoria (CRV) signed off on a successful 2016/17 racing campaign at its annual general meeting at Seymour last Thursday. Representatives from the Victoria’s regional racing clubs met at the AGM, with more than 80 per cent of country racing clubs recording an operating profit during the 2016/17 racing season. "The majority of race clubs had a successful year financially which is very pleasing for us to see," CRV chief executive Scott Whiteman said. "Our promotional campaigns had significant attendance growth throughout the year. We hope this growth will continue throughout the 2017/18 racing season."

Group One targets for Son Of MaherAfter Son Of Maher (Al Maher) dead-heated with Shadows Cast (Per Incanto) in the Coupland's Bakeries Mile Handicap (Gr 2, 1600m) last Wednesday, co-trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman have said they now intend to aim him at Group One races. The gelding will now be set for the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham on 9 December, before a potential tilt at the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at the same track on 20 January. “He’s a horse that I’ve made no secret of the fact that I think he’s the best horse I’ve ever trained,” Michael Pitman said. “We’re going to come up to Trentham for the Captain Cook Stakes and then bring him back home and get him ready for the Thorndon Mile.”

Captain Cook option for Amarula The Peter McKay-trained Amarula (Thorn Park) will now be aimed at the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham on 9 December after trainer Peter McKay was left impressed with the gelding’s last start fourth in the Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). Amarula had finished in the money in the previous four runs of his current campaign, including a second placing Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham. “I’ll keep him ticking along, he’s from a hardy breed that doesn’t mind a bit of racing,” McKay said. “He’ll probably go to Ellerslie for the set weights and penalties mile (the Eagle Technology Stakes) as a lead-up for Wellington.”

Hasahalo set on Karaka pathTrainer Stephen McKee now intends to aim New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Hasahalo (Savabeel) at the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m). The filly showed an impressive turn of foot to come from the back of the field to land the Classic at Riccarton last Saturday. “I was confident she was going well enough and she got a good track to show what she can do,” McKee said. “Very few horses have the acceleration she has. She’ll have a race somewhere over Christmas and then work toward the Karaka Mile.”

Ohceedee geldedStakes-placed three-year-old Ohceedee (Power) has been gelded in the hope it will bring about improvement in the son of the Power (Oasis Dream). Despite not being able to shake his maiden tag, the Steven Cole-trained Ohceedee has finished second on two of his nine career starts, with his best performance to date coming when finishing third in the Great Northern Foal Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in May. “Ohceedee’s been gelded and hopefully he can get out of maidens quickly and he looks the type that can put a few together,” Cole said. “We’ll be looking toward the Karaka Million 3YO Classic in January for him.”

Callan rates SangriaJockey Neil Callan is confident Spanish import Sangria (American Post) can land his first race since arriving in Hong Kong when he lines up in the Class Four St Andrew’s Challenge Quaich Handicap (1650m) at Happy Valley tonight. The gelding will be having his 11th start in Hong Kong since he was transferred from Fabrice Chappet, for whom he won a Listed race and was also Group Three-placed. “Since he’s dropped to Class Four, he’s had a couple of decent runs,” Callan said. “He’s at a good level, a good rating at the moment. He’s the right type of horse for the Happy Valley mile – he’s not very big, he’s well balanced, he’s got a lot of natural tactical speed. With all that together, I think he’s right in play.”

Chadwick permitted to ride in MauritiusPermission has been granted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for freelance jockey Matthew Chadwick to miss Sha Tin’s meeting on 3 December in order to participate in the International Jockeys’ Series, to be conducted by the Mauritius Turf Club on Saturday 2 December and Sunday 3 December.

filly is now unbeaten in both of her career starts and yesterday she had no problems defeating Louis D'or (Intello) by three and a half lengths with Omaha Beach (Epaulette) the same distance back in third. Mastercraftsman will stand the 2018 breeding season at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a fee of €25,000.

Son of Australia makes €260,000At the time of going to press, a colt from the second crop of Coolmore Stud’s Australia (Galileo) was topping the second day of the Goffs November Foal Sale after Stauffenberg Bloodstock went to €260,000 to secure the colt from the Garranlea Stud draft. Catalogued as Lot 430, the 1 April born foal is out of the Listed-winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Thai Haku, making the foal a three-quarters brother to Sarrocchi (Galileo), who made a winning debut for trainer Aidan O’Brien at Leopardstown last month. Thai Haku is herself a sister to fellow Listed winner Alabaraah, the dam of Group Three winner Alrahma (Shamardal).

Tally-Ho purchase son of Exceed And ExcelEarlier in the afternoon, a colt by Darley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill) was purchased by Tally-Ho Stud for €135,000 at the Goffs November Foal Sale yesterday. Catalogued as Lot 409 and offered as part of the Baroda and Colbinstown Studs draft, the colt is out of an unraced sister to Listed winner Shifting Power (Compton Place), while further back this is the same family as Group One winner Kinnaird (Dr Devious) and Group Two-winning pair Berkshire (Mount Nelson) and Ivawood (Zebedee).

Holy Roman Emperor proves popularA pair of colts by Aquis Farm shuttler Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) proved popular at yesterday’s Goffs November Mare Sale, after Peter O’Callaghan took home Lot 303 for €120,000, while Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock went to €105,000 to secure Lot 287. O’Callaghan outbid Coolmore for Lot 303, who is from the family of Group One winners Methaaf (Danzig) and Ribchester (Iffraaj). Meanwhile, Lot 287 is out of a half-sister to dual Group / Grade Two winner Kahal (Machiavellian) and Grade Three winner Katici Princess (Noverre).

Williams snaps up Saint Du RoiAt the time of going press, Saint Du Roi (Saint Des Saints) was topping the second day of the Arqana Autumn Sale in Deauville yesterday after Nicolas Williams went to €110,000 to secure the colt from the Meheran draft. On a day largely dominated by National Hunt breds, the colt is out of the winning Adieu Au Roi (Kenmare) mare Belle Du Roi, whose eight foals to race have all been winners. The son of Saint Des Saints (Cadoudal) was catalogued as Lot 404.

Highland Reel and Roly Poly to HKChampion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has confirmed that both Highland Reel (Galileo) and Roly Poly (War Front) will head to the Hong Kong International Races on 10 December. The globetrotting Highland Reel will attempt to regain his Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) crown while three-time Group One-winning filly Roly Poly will aim at the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1,

1600m). Both are likely to be retired after their respective runs. "Highland Reel seems to be fine after America and the plan is to run in Hong Kong,” O’Brien told the Racing Post. "Roly Poly could head to Hong Kong next for the Mile and retire after that."

Winter to be retiredThe Aidan O’Brien-trained dual Classic winner Winter (Galileo) will be retired and commence broodmare duties next year. The three-year-old filly won both the 1,000 and Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) early last season before adding the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) and Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) to her haul. "I think Winter has done enough to head on to her next career and she'll probably go off to stud for next year. We're looking forward to her foals," O’Brien told the Racing Post.

Songbird to be covered by ArrogateChampion racemare Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) will be covered by the recently

retired multiple Grade One winner Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) in 2018. The former Jerry Hollendorfer-trained mare was recently purchased at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale by Whisper Hill Farm owner Mandy Pope for US$9,500,000. "We all love Arrogate. We had a choice of a couple of different horses," said Wayne Sweezey of Timber Town Stable, who manages Pope's mares and foals. "(Pope) loved Arrogate when he was racing. We looked at Pioneerof The Nile and we thought about him very hard, but we kept circling back around to Arrogate.”

The multiple Group One-producing, Rich Hill Stud-based stallion Pentire (Be My Guest) died on Monday at the age of 25.

The son of Be My Guest (Northern Dancer), who was standing for a fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST) at Rich Hill,

underwent successful surgery to remove an intestinal tumour but did not wake up.

"He was 25, but I thought he was going to live forever - he was still serving and so healthy and well," Rich Hill Stud principal John Thompson said.

"We noticed after lunch on Monday he looked a bit uncomfortable and I got a bad feeling about it, in 20 years we'd only had the vet to him twice.

"We got him to the clinic and he went into surgery and when they opened him up they found a tumour that the intestine had wrapped around.

"They removed the growth and the intestine hadn't been compromised. They got him into recovery, but sadly he didn't wake up."

A dual Group One winner in Europe during his racing career, Pentire sired 16 individual Group One winners and 48 stakes winners overall with his progeny headed by New Zealand champion racehorse Mufhasa, who won ten times at the highest level and was twice crowned New Zealand Horse of the Year.

He sired Classic winners in New Zealand and Australia, with Xcellent winning the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), Xtravagant, who now stands at Newhaven Park in New South Wales, landing the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Ferlax taking out the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington.

In 2014, his son Prince Of Penzance scored a memorable victory in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), and Thompson is confident that his progeny will continue to succeed in Group One company.

The late stallion has three lots catalogued at today’s first session of the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale.

"He only had 12 foals in 2002 and that would have finished most

stallions. I was surprised at the time by the lack of interest of New Zealand breeders, but he bounced right back,” Thompson said.

"It just won't be the same around here without him, but his legacy will live on and Pentire is always going to be seen as a strength in any pedigree.

"He's had four Group One winners in the last two seasons and I'm certain there are more to come."

Pentire was laid to rest at Rich Hill yesterday.

Goffs’ decision to reformat their November Foal Sale prompted a competitive opening session to the auction on Monday, one

that featured 11 foals who broke the €50,000 barrier led by a colt by Coolmore shuttler No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) that commanded €85,000.

Monday's trade was the equivalent to the third session of the 2016 renewal and if compared directly was a day that yielded healthy gains in every key area, including the average price which rose by 15 per cent to €21,324.

Tom Whitehead of Powerstown Stud landed the day’s top foal, a colt from the second crop of No Nay Never bred and sold by Highpark Bloodstock, who was catalogued as Lot 238.

His sale turned a notable profit for Highpark, who paid just €6,000 for his dam Dacio, a Harlan’s Holiday (Harlan) half-sister

to the Group Three-placed Absolute Music (Consolidator), at Goffs in November 2014.

“He’s a nice colt by a very good two-year-old,” said Whitehead. “The Scat Daddy element is working very well over here and hopefully No Nay Never will go on to work well too.”

Busy day for BallyphilipIt was also a productive day for Paul and

Marie McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud, who came away with three pinhook prospects for next year led by a Tamayuz (Nayef) colt who led proceedings for much of the day at €80,000. Bred by the 'High Rollers' and sold through Ringfort Stud, he is a half-brother to dual winner Redicean (Medicean) and out of Red Halo, a Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare from the further family of Grade One winner Luas Line (Danehill).

The colt was catalogued as Lot 81. "He's by a stallion who is well established

as a Group One sire,” said Paul McCartan after

Reformatting reaps rewards with strong trade in foal opener

outbidding Tally-Ho Stud among others. “He was actually the first foal I saw when I arrived on Saturday morning and he did nothing but improve with showing.”

Tally-Ho Stud were later more successful in their pursuit of a colt from the first crop of Woodside shuttler Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit). Widely regarded as one of the potential highlights of the day, the colt lived up to his billing by selling for €75,000 to justify the decision of his breeders Highclere Stud to send him across the Irish Sea to sell at Goffs.

Norelands Stud offered the colt, who is the first foal out of Coin A Phrase, a Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) daughter of Australian Group Two winner French Bid (Anabaa).

“We bought the mare last year to send to Cable Bay,” said Jake Warren of Highclere Stud, “and it just so happened that she was in foal to him at the time. Cable Bay is getting stock like himself - they’re consistently well balanced, strong foals and this colt was always a standout. Having bought mares to send to him, it’s exciting to get a result like this.”

Tally-Ho’s acquisitions also included Lot 191, a Camelot (Montjeu) grandson of Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial (Gr 3, 1m) winner Baliyana (Dalakhani) from Ryebridge Stud who cost €68,000.

“We came here thinking that we'd take a punt on Camelot," said Roger O’Callaghan of Tally-Ho Stud, “and this is a good colt with a nice page."

His price was later almost matched by Lot 183, a Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) colt from Sandra Russell who made €66,000 to Darley Japan, a welcome new name on the buyers sheet.

Family appeal for RailtonA return to familiar territory prompted Jamie Railton to go to

€65,000 for a daughter of Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) from Shanaville Stables. The first foal by her 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winning sire to pass through a ring this year, the filly hails from the famous Time Charter (Saritamer) family cultivated to great effect in recent years by Robert Barnett, who has sold his stock through Railton’s consignment for a number of years.

It also didn’t hurt that the filly boasted a notable update as a half-sister to recent "Bosra Sham" Fillies' Stakes (Listed, 6f) placegetter All Out (Acclamation). The pair are out of Time Over (Mark Of Esteem), a half-sister to Group Three winner Time Away (Darshaan) and a granddaughter of none other than champion Time Charter herself.

"I sell everything out of this family, so I know it very well," said Railton. "It's a really good filly family and the half-sister [All Out] is good - she was third recently in the "Bosra Sham" Fillies' Stakes I also like the idea of the sire.”

It was with just a tinge of disappointment that Archie Alexander watched Villermont (All Too Hard) storm to victory in last Saturday’s Sandown Guineas (Gr

2, 1600m). After all, the Aaron Purcell trained three-

year-old had finished two and three quarter lengths astern of Alexander’s filly Temple Of Bel (Bel Esprit) when fourth at his previous run at Caulfield in mid-October. The Sandown Guineas third Black Sail (Savabeel) was, incidentally, second in that same race.

That race may have been a seemingly modest 1600 metres Benchmark 70 for three-year-olds but it’s one from which a Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Efficient (Zabeel) previously emerged. Not to mention, more recently, the subsequent Group One winners He’s Our Rokkii (Roc Des Cambes) and the filly Fenway (High Chaparral).

“It was a touch disappointing we couldn’t press on with her (Temple Of Bel) this spring

but she had a minor setback so we erred on the side of caution. If she were a four or five-year-old mare we’d have pushed on but as a lightly raced filly it was the right thing to give her a break.

“She’d only have had the one more run in any case, the Wakeful (Stakes). She’s in the paddock; she’ll come back in after Christmas and we’ll kick off in Melbourne with a view to getting her to the ATC Oaks or later to South Australia or Queensland if she’s not quite ready,” Alexander said.

Temple Of Bel has won the past two of her only four starts (at 1400 and 1600 metres) after finishing just two lengths behind the subsequent stakes winner Our Crown Mistress (Star Witness) when first up at 1200 metres.

“You could say she shouldn’t stay but I think she will and we’re definitely thinking Oaks with her,” he said.

Alexander was also conservative, this spring, in his management of his two feature races winners - Lord Fandango (Lord Of England) and Wheal Leisure (Artie Schiller) and hopes that will reap its reward even if the two may be destined to clash next time in. The Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) is the ultimate aim of each.

The two horses resumed in the same race at Bendigo in September and quinellaed it before Lord Fandango went on to win the Benalla Cup (2046m), the Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) and run a herculean fourth in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). Wheal Leisure won the $250,000 Inglis Cup (2000m) and was placed in the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m).

The form around both was later confirmed via Boom Time (Flying Spur), Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) and Vengeur Masque (Monsun).

“We looked after him,” Alexander said of Lord Fandango. “The temptation was there to press on but we limited him to the four runs. I’m not comparing him to Winx in any way but we’ve all seen the rewards Chris Waller has gained

from his management of the great mare, not pushing her too far.

“He can come back in next week and be ready for the early autumn. Ideally, he’d be third-up in the Australian Cup and then go on to The BMW and the Sydney Cup and, then, perhaps next spring we could be looking at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. That’s the plan but, of course, in this game it’s one day to the next,” Alexander said.

Wheal Leisure, all being well, is also bound for the Sydney Cup. “Remarkably, given we’re a relatively small stable, they will probably finish up racing against each other. She just wants further and therefore the obvious aim is the Sydney Cup. We stepped her to 2400 (metres) in the Geelong Cup and I felt she showed us she wanted further and likewise after the Queen Elizabeth at 2600 (metres),” he said.

The two established stayers and the one in waiting, Temple Of Bel, contributed to an excellent spring carnival for Alexander. “The stable’s runners have won about $950,000 since August which we think is pretty good for an operation of our size,” he said. Much of the income from same has been channeled into house and stable improvements.

Wheal Lesiure and Temple Of Bel are half-sisters out of the Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare Sadiya whose dam Lisa’s Game (Umatilla) beat all but Taufan’s Melody (Taufan) in the

Ballarat trainer Archie Alexander can look forward to the autumn with the spring carnival having franked the form around several of his leading contenders

controversial and rough-house 1998 Caulfield Cup.

They were bred by Lisa and Gavin McMaster’s Briarwood Farm at Cora-Lynn in Victoria.

“Archie and (his wife) Annie are both hardworking and dedicated to the horses, the horses don’t want for anything. The extra one per cent effort that they go to makes all the difference, it’s the little things real horse people appreciate,” Lisa McMaster told TBV after Wheal Leisure’s Inglis Cup win.

Alexander, originally sponsored by Lloyd Williams and then by Terry Henderson and Simon O’Donnell via OTI Racing, now has permanent residency and sees himself as an Australian trainer. “I can’t see that I wouldn’t be staying here unless something really weird happens,” he said.

He’s made a great impact in just three years as a licensed trainer in Australia and enjoyed a momentous 12 months highlighted not only by his racetrack success but his marriage to accomplished horsewoman Annie who too, like

Alexander, has of course emigrated from her England home.

Then Annie Bowles, her accomplishments include being Irish Ladies champion point to point jockey in 2013, and now - almost exclusively - she rides Lord Fandango and Wheal Leisure in their work amid taking on a multitude of other stable responsibilities including the office administration.

The Alexanders’ spring almost ended on another high note when, last Saturday, the Showcasing (Oasis Dream) filly So Far Sokool beat all but Yulong Xingsheng (I Am Invincible) in the Twilight Glow Stakes (Listed, 1400m).

The distinctively marked mare Spanner Head (Helmet) was one disappointment of the spring when she failed to build on her first up win at Flemington but Alexander believes firm ground was the problem.

“She started to feel her feet, especially after the Caulfield run (18 October) when she jarred up. She’ll have two months off and come back when the tracks are soft. She’s a good mare and hopefully can secure some black type when

she returns and before retirement beckons,” Alexander said.

Further success also beckons for the stable with a now consistent 35-40 horses in work. “We’ve had good and bad runs but it’s starting to come together with some good stock and a good team of people. Greg Baker, a good trainer in his own right, has been with us for about 12 months and it’s been great to have someone with his experience on board,” Alexander said.

"SHE’S A GOOD MARE AND HOPEFULLY CAN SECURE SOME BLACK TYPE WHEN

SHE RETURNS AND BEFORE RETIREMENT BECKONS”

Flying home from the rear of the field Hasahalo (Savabeel) drew clear by four lengths to win last Saturday’s New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) at Riccarton.A stakes winner at two last season,

Hasahalo relished the dry track to dominate her rivals and give three times champion New Zealand sire Savabeel (Zabeel) his 15th Group One winner and second in the space of a week as on the previous Saturday his son Embellish had impressed in taking the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) over the same course and distance.

Both Classic winners come from powerful female lines and have set Savabeel on a path to his fourth consecutive New Zealand sires’

title this season as he further extends the unmatched influence of his great sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram) on Classic events in both New Zealand and Australia in the past decade.

Hasahalo, linebred to influential females Special (Forli) and Natalma (Native Dancer) as well as to the ubiquitous Northern Dancer (Nearctic), is a NZ$110,000 graduate of the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale and was bred in partnership by Waikato Stud, home of her sire, and Mrs Isabel O’Shea, wife of leading Sydney trainer John O’Shea.

Halloween (Encosta De Lago), Hasahalo’s dam, placed as a three-year-old in Australia. Hasahalo is her fifth and best foal after the first two failed to place, her third, Best Jade

(Showcasing), became a winner in Singapore and her fourth, Dragon Robe (Alamosa), won in New Zealand last season.

The mare produced in 2015 a brother to Hasahalo named Hasabro (Savabeel), a placegetter at two years in New Zealand this season, and to follow has a 2016 filly by Sacred Falls (O’Reilly).

Hasahalo’s second dam La Lagune (Danehill) won Listed races in Melbourne and Adelaide but her most notable performance was in finishing second to True Jewels (Brief Truce) in the 2001 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

La Lagune’s unraced daughter Generous Nature (Carnegie) has also worked well when mated to Savabeel, producing Group winners Savvy Nature and Addictive Nature.

A half-sister to Listed winner Make Me A Miracle (Flying Spur), La Lagune is out of American import Commercial Choice (Knights Choice), a winner of nine races in the United States, two of them Listed, and closely related to Johnny D (Stage Door Johnny), champion grass horse and a Grade One winner. Also from the family are Australian Group One winners Titanic Jack (Encosta De Lago) and Sober Suit (Noalcoholic).

New Zealand 2,000 Guineas winner Embellish comes from a female family of equal or greater distinction than that of Hasahalo and like her is linebred to Northern Dancer and is a product of Waikato Stud.

Embellish sold at the same auction as Hasahalo, fetching NZ$775,000 to the bid of David Ellis to go into a syndicate as a potential stallion if he performed at a high level on the track.

Linebred 3m x 4f to Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor), Embellish is a brother to Group One-winning filly Diademe (Savabeel) and to stakes placed Deadly Shadow (Savabeel) and a half-brother to Roop All (Pins), another stakes placegetter.

His unraced dam Bling (O’Reilly) is a sister to stakes placed Irish Nova (O’ Reilly), dam of Sacred Star (Flying Spur), a multiple Group One winner who was ranked as New Zealand’s champion sprinter.

Embellish’s second dam Night Star (Centaine) is a sister to multiple stakes winner Starcent (Centaine), runner-up in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas and herself a good producer.

Star Of The Knight (Sir Tristram), Embellish’s third dam, was hardly typical of the progeny of her celebrated sire in that she was a speedy, early maturing juvenile who late in her first season of competition won the QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) then later captured the QTC Queensland Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m).

There is much depth and quality in this family, other members of which include Vanbrugh (Encosta De Lago), winner of the ATC Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and now at stud in New Zealand, plus stakes winners Sportsman (Supremo), Hoystar (Danzero), Prisoner Of Love (Canny Lad) and King Of Prussia (Anabaa).

VERDICT The booking of Joao Moreira makes Glory Horsie of significantinterest on his debut for a new stable but it’s hard to ignore the

claims of A FAST ONE, who might have been a shade unlucky when second on dirtthree weeks ago and now reverts to turf off the same mark from the plum draw.Haymaker, Treasure And Gold and Victory Music all have each-waypossibilities.

VERDICT Good cases can be made for several runners in a competitiveevent. The suggestion is TELEPHATIA, who had a few of

today’s rivals behind when a convincing winner over C&D this month, still looksfeasibly weighted on some of last season’s form and has the services of an excellent7lb claimer today. Proud Sky has been running with credit in higher-grade companythis season and is second choice. Le Panache and Gold Velvet are others to betaken very seriously.

VERDICT This might go to CALIFORNIA ASPAR, who is now 1lb lowerthan when going close over 5f here at the end of last season, has

an advantageous draw in stall 1 and moves back up to 6f after finishing strongly overthe minimum trip a fortnight ago. Peace Combination doesn’t win very often but isrespected after two very creditable runs in defeat. Junzi is next on the list.

VERDICT This doesn’t look very competitive and the vote goes to GOLDENEFFORT, who makes his official debut today. Danny Shum’s

gelding beat a 72-rated rival to win a recent trial on dirt and, although it might beunwise to take that piece of form at face value, he looks interesting off the standardopening mark of 52. His inside draw is an added bonus. Happy Happy Star, I’m AWitness and Happy Happy are possible dangers.

to Happy and Healthy and whilst in this form he has to be feared but a chance istaken with AMAZING FEELING who now gets his first chance to race over the tripthat saw him score in his final start of last season. VERDICT He has already defied the handicapper once, so the latest 7lb risemay not be enough to halt the winning run of Super FLuke who

is looking for a hat-trick of victories this season. It’s a big ask off this mark and asafer proposition seems to be WONDERFUL FIGHTER who is already a dual C&Dwinner and looks to be coming back to something like his best judged on his lateststart when a close third to Who Else But You. Star Of Joy put in a pleasing effortrecently and he should also be in the mix.

VERDICT After showing little last campaign, the season break hasobviously done FULL GLAMOUR some good as he returned to

run a close second to Thunder Stomp over C&D last month and a reproduction ofthat effort should see him go close here. Go Beauty Go despite having to giveweight to all should be competitive off this mark and Magnetism should have a roleto play if building on his latest effort behind Gold Land.
